Chain‐growth condensation polymerization of 4‐aminobenzoic acid esters bearing tri(ethylene glycol) side chain with lithium amide base

Chain‐growth condensation polymerization of p‐aminobenzoic acid esters 1 bearing a tri(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether side chain on the nitrogen atom was investigated by using lithium 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) as a base. The methyl ester monomer 1a afforded polymer with low molecular weight and a broad molecular weight distribution, whereas the polymerization of the phenyl ester monomer 1b at ?20 °C yielded polymer with controlled molecular weight (M_n = 2800–13,400) and low polydispersity (M_w/M_n = 1.10–1.15). Block copolymerization of 1b and 4‐(octylamino)benzoic acid methyl ester ( 2 ) was further investigated. We found that block copolymer of poly 1b and poly 2 with defined molecular weight and low polydispersity was obtained when the polymerization of 1b was initiated with equimolar LiHMDS at ?20 °C and continued at ?50 °C, followed by addition of 2 and equimolar LiHMDS at ?10 °C. Spherical aggregates were formed when a solution of poly 1b in THF was dropped on a glass plate and dried at room temperature, although the block copolymer of poly 1b and poly 2 did not afford similar aggregates under the same conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Comparative Study of the Determination of Parabens in Shampoos by Liquid Chromatography with Amperometric and Coulometric Detection

The simultaneous determination of four para‐hydroxybenzoic acid esters (parabens) in shampoos was studied by liquid chromatography (LC) with amperometric (LC‐AD) and coulometric (LC‐CD) detection. The parabens were separated on an ODS C18 reversed column by isocratic elution with a mobile phase based on methanol‐0.1 M acetic acid (60 : 40%, v/v) with 0.02 M NaClO₄ at a flow rate of 0.8 mL min^?1. The limit of detection (S/N>3) for the analytes was in the 15–25 pg (injected mass) range at an applied potential of 1.20 V vs. Ag/AgCl using the LC‐AD and in the 2–3 pg range at a potential of 0.790 V vs. Pd using the LC‐CD. The peak ratio of the internal standard peak (IS: 4‐hydroxybenzoic acid sec‐butyl ester) versus the analyte peak was found to be related to the amount injected from 0.1 ng to 100ng (r=0.996–0.999) with the LC‐AD and from 0.050 ng to 100 ng range (r=0.999–1.000) with the LC‐CD. The relative standard deviation (RSD, n=10) was comprised between 1.8 to 3.5% by LC‐AD ( 5 ng injected) and between 2.0 to 2.4% by LC‐CD (0.5 ng injected). The determination of four most used parabens in ten different shampoos was successfully realized.     

Reductive carboxylation of alkyl halides with CO2 by use of photoinduced SmI2/Sm reduction system

Upon visible-light irradiation, reductive carboxylation of alkyl halides takes place by using a SmI₂/Sm mixed system under atmospheric CO₂ to afford the corresponding carboxylic acids in good to excellent yields.     

Electrophilic glycosidation employing 3,5-O-(di-tert-butylsilylene)-erythro-furanoid glycal leads to exclusive formation of the β-anomer: synthesis of 2′-deoxynucleosides and its 1′-branched analogues

Stereoselectivity in N-iodosuccimide (NIS)-mediated electrophilic glycosidation was examined by employing 2,4-bis-O-(trimethylsilyl)thymine and three different silyl-protected erythro-furanoid glycals 12, 16, and 18. As a result, it was found that 3,5-O-(di-t-butylsilylene)-protected 18 gave only the β-anomer (21). The remarkable stereoselectivity observed by employing 18 is discussed on the basis of its X-ray crystallographic analysis. 1-Substituted glycals gave the corresponding β-anomer, again exclusively, to provide access to 1′-branched 2′-deoxynucleosides.     

Synthesis, crystal structure, and structural conversion of Ni molybdate hydrate NiMoO4·nH2O

The synthesis and crystal structure of NiMoO₄·nH₂O were investigated. The hydrate crystallized in the triclinic system with space group P−1, Z=4 with unit cell parameters of a=6.7791(2) Å, b=6.8900(2) Å, c=9.2486(2) Å, α=76.681(2)°, β=83.960(2)°, γ=74.218(2)°. Its ideal chemical composition was NiMoO₄·3/4H₂O rather than NiMoO₄·1H₂O. Under hydrothermal conditions the hydrate turned directly into α-NiMoO₄ above 483 K, giving nanorods thinner than the crystallites of the mother hydrate. On the other hand, it turned into Anderson type of polyoxomolybdate via a solid-solution process in a molybdate solution at room temperature.     

Chemoenzymatic synthesis of (2S,3S,4S)-form, the physiologically active stereoisomer of dehydroxymethylepoxyquinomicin (DHMEQ), a potent inhibitor on NF-κB

A new route for (2S,3S,4S)-form, the physiologically active stereoisomer of dehydroxymethylepoxyquinomicin (DHMEQ), a potent NF-κB inhibitor, was established by chemoenzymatic approach. Elaboration on the asymmetric epoxidation of a p-benzoquinone monoketal with benzylcinchonidinium tert-butylhydroperoxide yielded an epoxyenone, in 79.8% ee and 57% yield in reproducible manner. By way of the transformation of this key intermediate to enantiomerically pure (2S,3S,4S)-DHMEQ, the contaminating undesired enantiomer could be effectively removed by applying Burkholderia cepacia lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of diacylated precursor. The above integrated combination of chemical asymmetric synthesis and enzyme-catalyzed kinetic resolution enabled us to prepare active DHMEQ in a large-scale.     

Temperature and heat capacity of atomic clusters as estimated in terms of kinetic-energy release of atomic evaporation

The temperature and heat capacity of isolated atomic clusters are studied in terms of an ab initio statistical theory of kinetic energy distribution by atomic evaporation. Two definitions of canonical temperature are examined and numerically compared: One is based on the most probable kinetic energy release (KER), whereas the other is determined with use of the entire distribution of the KER. The mutual relationship and their advantages are discussed.     

Synthesis and reactions of benzopentathiepin having hydroxyl group

The synthesis of benzopentathiepin having a hydroxyl group at the neighboring position of polysulfur ring was performed by demethylation of 6-ethyl-9-methoxybenzopentathiepin with hydrogenbromide. Benzotrithiole having hydroxyl group was not isolated at all. The hydroxyl group was also alkylated with alkyl iodide in the presence of weak base.     

Marine diterpenoids with a briarane skeleton from the Okinawan soft coral Pachyclavularia violacea

Five new briarane-type diterpenoids, pachyclavulides E (5), F (6), G (7), H (8) and I (9), were isolated from the Okinawan soft coral Pachyclavularia violacea. The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on the results of spectroscopic analysis. Compound 5 showed a weak growth-inhibitory activity in vitro toward cancer cells.
