Aragonite twinning in gastropod nacre

Aragonite twinning in gastropod nacre has been investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with the focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation technique. At the growth front of nacre, Haliotis discus hannai and Omphalius rusticus form a “stack-of-coins” structures, which consist of pseudo-hexagonal and elliptical aragonite tablets, respectively. SEM, EBSD, and TEM analyses revealed that these tablets are monolithic single crystal and almost free of the {1 1 0} twins that are common in aragonite of biotic or abiotic origin. The longest diagonal of the hexagon and the longer axis of the ellipse are parallel to the a-axis of aragonite. The crystal orientation of each tablet in a stack, measured by TEM-Kikuchi pattern analysis, is almost the same but there is occasionally {1 1 0} twin-like relationship between adjacent tablets along the stacking. On the other hand, the fibrous aragonite layer formed prior to the nacreous structure is composed of polycrystalline aragonite with high density of {1 1 0} twins. TEM observation suggests that the interlamellar organic sheet prevents the inheritance of the twins, by selecting only single domain of the twins, through the mineral bridge.     

Microdetermination of fluorine in organic compounds by oxygen flask combustion and conductometric titration

For the conductometric titration of fluoride with calcium acetate, solvent system in sample solution and titrant, concentration, and acidity of sample solution were examined to establish the titration conditions. Results of these examinations were transferred to the microdetermination of fluorine in organic compounds using oxygen flask combustion method.Comparative examination between quartz and Pyrex flasks for the combustion of fluorine samples indicated that good results were obtained by the use of the former flask, whereas the use of the latter one gave negative values of 1.0–1.6% due to the formation of boron fluoride during the combustion.     

Particle pairs in the cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation and the interacting boson model

The number projected HFB wave function is analyzed in terms of particle pairs. It is found that the S(J = 0) and D(J = 2) pairs have dominant probabilities in this wave function before the occurrence of backbending, which is clarified from the behaviour of the O(J = 12) and M(J = 10) pairs arising from the $\text{i}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>13</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$ level. After backbending the wave function can be described mainly in terms of the O and M pairs plus the core made of S and D pairs.     

Chemiluminescence change of polyphenol dendrimers with different core molecules

Second generation polyphenol dendrimers (PDs) with different core molecules were synthesized, and their chemiluminescence (CL) was measured by reacting the PDs with H2O2 under alkaline conditions. All of the PDs showed a strong CL, more than 120-fold greater than that of gallic acid. Various CL intensities of the PDs were obtained using different core molecules in the PDs. The distance between each dendron in the PD structure is crucial in the PD CL intensity.
