Two-step photoionization of cold atoms by two-color evanescent-light waves and application to atom detection with high spatial resolution

We consider a new scheme of optically ionizing atoms with 10-nm-order spatial resolution. In this method, two-color near-field lights are generated on a narrow slit illuminated by two-color evanescent lights via total-internal reflection of two-wavelength light beams. In order to illustrate the feasibility, we first obtain the ionization cross section from two-step photionization of cold Rb atoms by two-color evanescent lights on a plane surface of a prism. Then, we numerically estimate the ionization efficiency as a function of the slit width using Bethe formula. The scheme is useful for detecting ground-state atoms under less perturbation by scattered light.     

Chemically modified proton‐conducting membranes based on sulfonated polyimides: Improved water stability and fuel‐cell performance

A series of branched/crosslinked sulfonated polyimide (B/C‐SPI) membranes were prepared and evaluated as proton‐conducting ionomers based on the new concept of in situ crosslinking from sulfonated polyimide (SPI) oligomers and triamine monomers. Chemical branching and crosslinking in SPI oligomers with 1,3,5‐tris(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene as a crosslinker gave the polymer membranes very good water stability and mechanical properties under an accelerated aging treatment in water at 130 °C, despite their high ion‐exchange capacity (2.2–2.6 mequiv g^?1). The resulting polymer electrolytes displayed high proton conductivities of 0.2–0.3 S cm^?1 at 120 °C in water and reasonably high conductivities of 0.02–0.03 S cm^?1 at 50% relative humidity. In a single H₂/O₂ fuel‐cell system at 90 °C, they exhibited high fuel‐cell performances comparable to those of Nafion 112. The B/C‐SPI membranes also displayed good performances in a direct methanol fuel cell with methanol concentrations as high as 50 wt % that were superior to those of Nafion 112. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pressure response of Raman spectra of water and its implication to the change in hydrogen bond interaction

In situ Raman spectroscopic measurements of water in the region of OH vibration were conducted up to 0.4 GPa at 23 and 52 degrees C. The frequencies of the decomposed OH stretching bands initially decreased with increasing pressure, reached a minimum at 0.15 GPa and increased up to 0.3 GPa and then decreased, which corresponds to the variations of the strength of hydrogen bonding. This variation was observed at 23 degrees C, but not at 52 degrees C, which suggests a change in pressure dependence on the hydrogen bond interaction between these two temperatures. Based on the equilibration model between hydrogen-bonded and nonhydrogen-bonded molecules, the present experimental results indicate that the pressure variation of the viscosity depends on the ratio of hydrogen-bonded molecules, rather than the strength of hydrogen bonding between molecules.     

Photodimerization of benzene -photochromism of layered dithiacyclophane-

A novel cage compound was obtained by irradiation of a quadruple-layered dithiacyclophane and showed thermally reverse reaction.     

A novel transformation of a 1 : 1 : 1 racemic complex of 2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl, Me4N+ Cl- and MeOH into a conglomerate in the solid state by heating or contact with MeOH vapour

The title racemate-to-conglomerate transformation which occurs in the solid state on heating or contact with MeOH vapour has been studied by IR and DTA spectral measurements, microscopic observation, and by X-ray structural and X-ray powder diffraction analysis.     

Synthesis of 4,5-diaminopyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoline derivatives by annulation of N,N-dialkyl[2-(pyrrol-1-yl)benzylidene]ammonium salts in the presence of an isocyanide

A facile synthetic method for 4,5-diaminopyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoline derivatives has been developed. Treatment of 2-(pyrrol-1-yl)benzaldehydes with secondary amine hydrochloride/NaI/TMSCl/Et₃N in the presence of an isocyano compound leads to the formation of 4-alkyl(or aryl)amino-5-dialkylaminopyrrolo[1,2-a]quinolines.     

XPS study of one-dimensional compounds: TiS3

X-Ray photoelectron spectra of TiS₃ with a one-dimensional structure were measured. TiS₃ may be regarded as Ti⁴⁺(S₂)^2?S^2? with pairs of S atoms (S₂) and isolated S atoms. The spectra of the sulfur core-levels are assigned by comparison with those of TiS₂, where all S atoms are largely separated. The binding energy of the S₂ pairs is found to be 1.4 eV higher than that of the isolated S atoms, which is consistent with the larger negative charge of the isolated atoms. The structures of the valence band of TiS₃ are discussed in terms of a molecular orbital scheme for the S₂ pairs.     

An optimized method for determination of intracellular glutathione in mouse macrophage cultures by fluorimetric high-performance liquid chromatography

We have optimized a method for the determination of intracellular glutathione by high-performance liquid chromatography, using fluorimetric detection. To minimize artifacts and provide an accurate determination of intracellular glutathione, cell extracts were prepared using extraction conditions specifically designed to inhibit autoxidation and enzymatic degradation of glutathione. The sensitivity of the method was enhanced by adjusting the dansyl chloride derivatization reaction with regard to parameters such as pH, reaction time and dansyl chloride concentration. Both oxidized and reduced forms of glutathione were quantified using the refined method in extracts of oxidatively stressed J774A.1 mouse macrophage cells and reflected an expected shift in cellular redox status.     

Novel synthesis of heterocyclic spirans by tandem cycloaddition to sulfur-containing heterocumulenes

Novel Ni(C0)₄-promoted tandem cycloadditions of diphenylcyclo- propenone to isothiocyanates and to CS₂ were found to provide new heterocyclic spirans, pyrroline-2-one-5-spiro-5′-thiolene-4′-ones and a thiolene-2-one-5-spiro-5′-thiolene-4′-one, respectively, in moderate yields.
