ESR studies of a new phenoxyl-nitroxide hetero biradical

A new phenoxyl-nitroxide hetero biradical was prepared, and the nitrogen hyperfine splitting and g_iso-value of the biradical in toluene have been determined from its solution ESR spectrum.     

Equilibrium anionic polymerization of n-valeraldehyde

This paper describes an anionic polymerization of n-valeraldehyde (VA) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) initiated by benzophenone-monolithium complex in a high vacuum system. In spite of the deposition of the resulting polymer an equilibrium state between the monomer and the polymer was observed at a temperature range of ?90 to ?68°C. From the linear relationship between the equilibrium monomer concentration and the polymerization temperature, values of ?5.3 ± 0.3 kcal/mole and ?25.7 ± 1.4 cal/mole-deg, respectively, were evaluated for the enthalpy change and the entropy change in the present system. The effect of polar substituents on the polymerizability of aldehydes is discussed from the comparison of these values with those in the case of β-methoxypropionaldehyde.     

Real-time measurement of a thickness of a thin coating by means of sheet laser

An ingenious optical method was developed for measuring the thickness of a coating directly and in real time at a measuring frequency of a few tens of Hz. The basic optical arrangement is very simple, and consists of a semiconductor laser, two cylindrical lenses, and a silicon photodiode array or CCD camera. The range of measurable thickness is roughly between λ and 100λ, where λ is a wavelength of the laser light, and its measuring error is a few percent. The previously developed method for measuring the thin film in air, which can be analyzed theoretically, can also be applied for estimating the thickness of a coating on the substratum within an error of 2%.     

Electron-transfer mediated photooxygenation of biphenyl and its derivatives in the presence of Mg(ClO4)2

The 9,10-dicyanoanthracene-sensitized photooxygenation of biphenyl and its derivatives in the presence of Mg(ClO₄)₂ in acetonitrile brought about the oxidative cleavage of benzene nucleus to give benzoic acid and its derivatives.     

Optical Inverse Perfect Shuffle Interconnection and Its Application to Polynomial Evaluation

An optoelectronic implementation of polynomial evaluation has been presented which uses a recirculating inverse perfect shuffle interconnection (IPS). The IPS interconnection is formed by a binary phase grating which permits a high density of interconnection; it can be utilized in a high order of polynomial evaluation processing system.     

Preparation of amphiphilic diblock copolymers with pendant hydrophilic phosphorylcholine and hydrophobic dendron groups and their self‐association behavior in water

Generation 3.5 poly(amido amine) dendron (G3.5) with 16 n‐butyl terminal groups containing an acrylamide monomer (AaUG3.5) was prepared by condensation between an amino focal group in G3.5 and 11‐acrylamidoundecanoic acid. AaUG3.5 was polymerized using poly(2‐methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (pMPC)‐based macro‐chain transfer agent via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization to obtain amphiphilic diblock copolymers with different compositions. The diblock copolymers (P_mD_n) were composed of a hydrophilic pMPC block and hydrophobic pendant dendron‐bearing block, where P and D represent pMPC and pAaUG3.5, respectively, and m and n represent the degree of polymerization for each block, respectively. P₂₉₆D₁ and P₉₈D₃ formed vesicles and large compound micelles and vesicles, respectively, which was confirmed by light scattering measurements and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) observations. The large compound micelles formed from P₉₈D₃ could not incorporate hydrophilic guest polymer molecules, because the aggregates did not have a hydrophilic hollow core. In contrast, the vesicles formed from P₂₆₉D₁ could incorporate hydrophilic guest polymer molecules into the hollow core. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Development of Novel Molecular Catalysts “Phosphazene Catalysts” for Commercial Production of Highly Advanced Polypropylene Glycols

This contribution reports development and an application of high-performance catalysts, phosphazene catalysts (PZN and PZO) with high reactivity and selectivity for ring-opening polymerization reactions of propylene oxides that provide highly advanced polypropylene glycols. The produced polypropylene glycols with high purity and narrow molecular weight distributions have been commercialized as raw materials for environmentally- and people-friendly polyurethane foams (for car sheet cushions).
