Separation and identification of Taxifolin 3-O-glucoside isomers from Chamaecyparis obtusa (Cupressaceae)

Taxifolin 3-O-glucoside isomers, [(2R, 3R)-, (2R, 3S)-, (2S, 3R)- and (2S, 3S)-] were isolated from leaves of Chamaecyparis obtuse (Cupressaceae). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of UV, MS, CD, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectral data, including 2D shift correlation. It was found that the compounds could be distinguished by the use of 1H- and 13C-NMR spectral data.     

Simultaneous polymerization and formation of polyacetylene film on the surface of concentrated soluble Ziegler-type catalyst solution

A direct method of simultaneously polymerizing and forming acetylene monomer to produce uniformly thin films of polyacetylene was investigated in terms of catalyst system, catalyst concentration, and polymerization temperature. The best catalyst was a Ti(OC₄H₉)₄–Al(C₂H₅)₃ system (Al/Ti = 3–4) and the critical concentration was 3 mmole/l. of Ti(OC₄H₉)₄. Below the critical concentration, only a solid or a powder was obtained. The configuration of the polymers obtained depends strongly upon the polymerization temperature. Thus an all-cis polymer was obtained at temperatures lower than ?78°C, whereas an all-trans polymer resulted at temperatures higher than 150°C. Observations either in an electron microscope by direct transmission or in a scanning electron microscope showed that the film is composed of an accumulation of fibrils about 200–300 Å in width and of indefinite length.     

Synthesis of block copolymer with polystyrene and nylon units

Bis-ε-aminocaproylaminocaproylhexamethylenediamine ( I ) was synthesized as an analog of 6-nylon pentamer diamine, and its incorporation into block copolymers was studied with the use of α,ω-dihydroxyl, α,ω-bisdimethylchlorosilyl, and α,ω-diepoxy polystyrene. In the course of the experiments, the stability and the reactivity of 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and tetramethylene diisocyanate in aprotic dipolar solvents were examined by infrared spectroscopy. The only usable solvent, N-methylpyrrolidone, was found still inadequate for the synthesis involving I, diisocyanate, and α,ω-dihydroxyl polystyrene. A block copolymer having M _n = 18,000 was obtained by the reaction of I and α,ω-diepoxy polystyrene. All T_g values of the block copolymers were above 90°C, higher than for polystyrenes with corresponding molecular weight.     

Electrochemical and spectral studies on the reductive nitrosylation of water-soluble iron porphyrin

The reaction of iron(III) (meso-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin (Fe(III)TMPyP) with nitric oxide (NO) was studied by electronic absorption spectroscopy, ESR, and electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques in aqueous solutions with pH from 2.2 to 12.0. Fe(III)TMPyP has been found to undergo a reductive nitrosylation in all pHs, and the product of nitric oxide binding to the porphyrin has been determined as iron(II) porphyrin nitrosyl complex ([Fe(II)(NO)TMPyP]). The rate of the reductive nitrosylation exhibits a tendency to get faster with increase in pH. An intermediate species was observed around neutral pH by spectroelectrochemical technique and was proposed to be the iron(II) nitrosyl complex of the mu-oxo dimeric form of FeTMPyP, which is known to be a predominant in neutral solutions.     

Novel polycationic biocides: Synthesis and antibacterial activity of polymeric phosphonium salts

Various polymeric phosphonium salts and the corresponding low-molecular-weight model compounds were prepared and their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were explored by the viable cell counting method in sterile distilled water. Antibacterial activity of the polymers was found to be higher than that of the corresponding model compounds, particularly against S. aureus. Furthermore, the polymeric phosphonium salt exhibited a higher activity by 2 orders of magnitude than the polymeric quaternary ammonium salt with the same structure except the cationic part. Compounds with the longest alkyl chain (octyl) studied were found to exhibit particularly high activity, and this finding may be ascribed to the contribution of the increased hydrophobicity of the compounds to the cidal activity. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Electron spin resonance study on polymerization of alkyl acrylates with n-butyl titanate(IV)–triethylaluminum catalyst

n-Butyl titanate(IV)–triethylaluminum catalyst at Al/Ti molar ratios greater than 6 polymerizes methyl and n-butyl acrylates at ?78°C. The polymerization system which includes methyl acrylate at ?78°C, gives two ESR signals with g factors of 1.958 and 1.961 that overlap each other. The absorption intensity of the latter signal is approximately proportional to the polymer chain concentration calculated from polymer yield and the molecular weight. The polymerization system at Al/Ti ratios smaller than 3 has no catalytic activity on the polymerization and shows only the ESR signal with the g factor of 1.958. On the basis of these facts the ESR signal with the g factor of 1.961 is attributed to the active growing end of poly(methyl acrylate) with this catalyst. The character of this active growing end is discussed.     

Fischer indolization and its related compounds—VII : Development of abnormal fischer indolization of ortho-methoxyphenylhydrazone to provide a synthetic method for useful indole derivatives possessing an active methine group at C6 and novel 3,6′-biindole derivatives

Fischer indolization of ethyl pyruvate 2-methoxyphenylhydrazone (1) with p-toluene-sulfonic acid in benzene in the presence of an enolizable dicarbonyl or an indolic compound gave either an indole product having an active methine group at C₆ or a novel type of 3,6′-biindole compound. Structures of the products were established by NMR spectra and chemical evidence.     

A new synthetic pathway of segmented tri-block copolyether

A new synthetic pathway of A–B–A tri-block copolyether which is composed of a hydrophilic poly(oxyethylene) unit as an A part and a hydrophobic poly(oxy-2-methyl-trimethylene) unit as a B part is proposed. Telechelic α-tosyl-ω-tosyloxypoly(oxy-2-methyl-trimethylene) derived from tosylation of poly(oxy-2-methyl-trimethylene glycol) (PMTG) was allowed to react with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in the presence of sodium hydroxide. T_g of the resulting A–B–A tri-block copolyether (PEMG) (M?_n = 1600) was ?72°C and its specific gravity [D₄¹⁵] was 1.055.     

Determination of iodine in organic iodine compounds by non-equilibrium isotope exchange in a heterogeneous exchange system

Some water-soluble organic iodine compounds (aqueous solution) can be analyzed for iodine by isotopically exchanging with labelled elementary iodine (organic solution). The method is applicable to exchange systems in which the rate of the exchange is rather small but measurable, before the exchange equilibrium is attained. The iodine content of iodoaromatic amino acids such as 5-iodouracil and 3,5-diiodotyrosine can be determined within an error of ±4%.
