4-(Pyrrolidinyl)methoxybenzoic acid derivatives as a potent, orally active VLA-4 antagonist

A novel series of benzoic acid derivatives as VLA-4 antagonists were synthesized. Optimization, focusing on activity and lipophilicity needed for cell permeability, resulted in the identification of 15b and 15e with good activity (IC50 = 1.6 nM each) and moderate lipophilicity (Log D = 2.0, 1.8). Furthermore, 15e demonstrated efficacy in murine asthma model by an oral dose of 30 mg/kg.     

A smoothing property of Schrödinger equations in the critical case

This paper deals with the critical case of the global smoothing estimates for the Schrödinger equation. Although such estimates fail for critical orders of weights and smoothing, it is shown that they are still valid if one works with operators with symbols vanishing on a certain set. The geometric meaning of this set is clarified in terms of the Hamiltonian flow of the Laplacian. The corresponding critical case of the limiting absorption principle for the resolvent is also established. Obtained results are extended to dispersive equations of Schrödinger type, to hyperbolic equations and to equations of other orders.     

Sharp photonic Crystal Defect Modes and Their Response to Ultrashort Optical Pulses

Single photonic crystal defects based on an air-bridge structure were fabricated. We obtained sharp defect modes with quality factors higher than 600 and observed their response to ultrashort optical pulses by utilizing two-photon absorption.     

Extractability of metals in municipal solid wastes fly ash using supercritical CO(2) containing Cyanex 302.

The extraction of lead from fly ash produced during the thermal treatment of municipal solid wastes was studied using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO(2)) and Cyanex 302 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monophosphinic acid). The extraction of lead from the fly ash was carried out in a 5 cm(3) internal volume reaction vessel under static extraction conditions at 323 K, and 24 MPa for 1 h. The extraction efficiencies of lead ranged from 4% to the total extraction under the conditions of 0.05 g fly ash with 2 cm(3) Cyanex 302. There was a linear relationship between the extraction efficiencies of lead using the SC-CO(2) + Cyanex 302 and using a water-based method described by JLT13.

Carbon dioxide has been found to react with aromatic compounds such as benzene, anisole, furane, and thiophene to give aromatic acids in modest yields with palladium(II) salts as catalysts. The addition of t-BuOOH increases the yield.
