The history of differential forms is examined from its origins in the work of Clairaut on the theory of differential equations through the end of the 19th century. In particular, we explore the developments leading to the concept of the exterior derivative, the Poincaré lemma and its converse, and the notion of the period of an exact differential. The second-order nonlinear optical coefficients associated with chirality differ in sign for the two mirror-image forms (enantiomers) of a chiral material. Structures comprised of alternating stacks of the enantiomers can therefore be used for quasi-phase-matched frequency conversion, as we demonstrate here by second-harmonic generation from Langmuir-Blodgett films of a helicenebisquinone. Such structures could lead to new types of frequency converters in which both the second-order nonlinear response and quasi-phase-matching arise from the chirality of a material rather than its polar order. 相似文献

We call this problem minimum h-piercing. (ii) Assuming is such that for each there exists a point in whose distance from D's center is at most αr(D), where r(D) is D's radius and 0α<1 is a given constant, find a minimum-cardinality subset of , such that each disk in is pierced by at least one point of . We call this problem minimum discrete piercing with cores. (iii) Assuming is the set of center points of disks in , and that each covers at most l points of , where l is a constant, find a minimum-cardinality subset of , such that each point of is covered by at least one disk of . We call this problem minimum center covering. For each of these problems we present a constant-factor approximation algorithm (trivial for problem (iii)), followed by a polynomial-time approximation scheme. The polynomial-time approximation schemes are based on an adapted and extended version of Chan's [T.M. Chan, Polynomial-time approximation schemes for packing and piercing fat objects, J. The property of spatial mixing and strong spatial mixing in spin systems has been of interest because of its implications on uniqueness of Gibbs measures on infinite graphs and efficient approximation of counting problems that are otherwise known to be #P hard. In the context of coloring, strong spatial mixing has been established for Kelly trees in (Ge and Stefankovic, arXiv:1102.2886v3 (2011)) when where q the number of colors, Δ is the degree and .. is the unique solution to . It has also been established in (Goldberg et al., SICOMP 35 (2005) 486–517) for bounded degree lattice graphs whenever for some constant β, where Δ is the maximum vertex degree of the graph. We establish strong spatial mixing for a more general problem, namely list coloring, for arbitrary bounded degree triangle‐free graphs. Our results hold for any whenever the size of the list of each vertex v is at least where is the degree of vertex v and β is a constant that only depends on α. Aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy was used to study atomic-scale processes in Pd-LaFeO(3) catalysts. Clear evidence for diffusion of Pd into LaFeO(3) and out of LaFe(0.95)Pd(0.05)O(3-δ) under high-temperature oxidizing and reducing conditions, respectively, was found, but the extent to which these processes occurred was quite limited. These observations cast doubt that such phenomena play a significant role in a postulated mechanism of self-regeneration of this system as an automotive exhaust-gas catalyst. 相似文献
