Network images of drainage channels in sea spray icing by MR microscopy

An MR imaging system was developed to visualize brine drainage channels in sea spray icing. Brine pockets trapped in spray-ice matrices during ice growth are structural features of sea spray icing. Brine in the spray ice sample had drained out; therefore, using a suction pump, we filled the air gaps in the drainage channels with dodecane. In the experiments, 0.5-1.0 h was necessary to accumulate signals sufficient to obtain a 3-D micro-image; the image matrix comprised 128(3) voxels (each voxel was 200 microm per side). The MIP view showed that sea spray icing has a developed drainage-channel network structure.     

Clathrate-formation mediated adsorption of methane on Cu-complex crystals

We measured adsorption and desorption isotherms of methane on [Cu(4, 4'-bipyridine)2(BF4)2] (LPC) at 258, 273, and 303 K. Adsorption proceeds almost vertically at a definite pressure, which is named gate pressure. The lower the measurement temperature, the smaller the gate pressure. The temperature dependence of the gate pressure is expressed by the Clapeyron-Clausius equation, giving a thermodynamic evidence on the clathrate formation between the Cu complex and methane.     

Enzymatic transformation of bacterial polyhydroxyalkanoates into repolymerizable oligomers directed towards chemical recycling

The enzymatic transformation into an oligomer was carried out with the objective of developing the chemical recycling of bacterial polyesters. Poly(R-3-hydroxyalkanoate)s (PHAs), such as poly[(R-3-hydroxybutyrate)-co-12%(R-3-hydroxyhexanoate)] and poly[(R-3-hydroxybutyrate)-co-12%(R-3-hydroxyvalerate)], were degraded by granulated Candida antarctica lipase B immobilized on hydrophilic silica (lipase GCA) in a diluted organic solvent at 70 degrees C. The degradation products were cyclic oligomers having a molecular weight of a few hundreds. The obtained cyclic oligomer was readily repolymerized by the same lipase (lipase GCA) to produce the corresponding polyester in a concentrated solution. The cyclic oligomer was copolymerized with epsilon-caprolactone using lipase to produce the corresponding terpolymers having an Mw of 21,000. This is the first example of the enzymatic chemical recycling of bacterial PHAs using lipase. Poly(R-3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)] was also degraded into the linear-type R-3HB monomer to trimer by P(3HB)-depolymerase (PHBDP) in phosphate buffer at 37 degrees C. The degradation using PHBDP required a longer reaction time compared with the lipase-catalyzed degradation in organic solvent. The monomer composition of the oligomer depended on the origin of the PHBDP. The R-3HB monomer was predominately produced by PHBDP from Pseudomonas stutzeri, while the R-3HB dimer was produced by PHBDP from Alcaligenes faecalis T1. Repolymerization of these oligomers by lipase in concentrated organic solvent produced a relatively low-molecular-weight P(3HB) (e.g., Mw=2,000). Degradation of P(3HB) by lipase in organic solvent into repolymerizable cyclic oligomer and degradation of P(3HB) by PHBDP in buffer into hydroxy acid type R-3HB dimer.     

Production of doubly charged helium ions by two-photon absorption of an intense sub-10-fs soft x-ray pulse at 42 eV photon energy

We report on the observation of doubly charged helium ions produced by a nonlinear interaction between a helium atom and photons with a photon energy of 42 eV which are generated with the 27th harmonic of a femtosecond pulse from a Ti:sapphire laser. The number of ions is proportional to the square of the intensity of the 27th harmonic pulse, and thus two-photon double ionization should be dominantly induced as compared with other nonlinear processes accompanying sequential ionization via a singly charged ion. This phenomenon is utilized to measure the pulse duration of the 27th harmonic pulse by using an autocorrelation technique, for the first time to our knowledge, and as a result a duration of 8 fs is found.     

Efficient synthesis of (±)-γ-lycorane employing stereoselective conjugate addition to nitroolefin

(±)-γ-Lycorane 3 was synthesized in 52% overall yield via seven steps from 5 by employing the highly stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of 5 to 9 and diastereoselective conjugate addition of aryllithium to a nitroolefin 10 as two key steps.     

Two-color two-photon 4Pi fluorescence microscopy

In 4Pi fluorescence microscopy the point-spread function is composed of a strong central lobe accompanied by interference sidelobes that produce artifacts in the image. We propose to combine two-color two-photon fluorescence microscopy and 4Pi fluorescence microscopy to overcome this sidelobe problem. Simulation results show that a single sharp fluorescence spot can be produced by use of two excitation wavelengths of 400 and 800 nm and detected at 350-nm emission wavelength.     

Efficient sum-frequency generation of continuous-wave single-frequency coherent light at 252 nm with dual wavelength enhancement

Highly efficient frequency conversions were conducted to obtain deep-ultraviolet single-mode coherent light by use of two-stage external cavities. A power of 154 mW at approximately 252 nm was obtained with a conversion efficiency of more than 8% by doubly resonant sum-frequency mixing of 373-nm light from the first-stage conversion and 780-nm light from a single-mode Ti:sapphire laser. The output performance of the deep-ultraviolet light source is sufficient for use in the laser cooling of neutral silicon atoms.     

Two types of intramolecular homolytic substitution reactions at group XIV atoms: unusual radical 1,4-Sn shifts from Si to C and carbonylative SHi reaction at Si

4-[(Trimethylstannyl)diphenylsilyl]butanoyl radical, arising from the corresponding 3-(stannylsilyl)propyl radical and CO, undergoes an SHi reaction at Si with extrusion of trimethyltin radical to give silacyclopentanone. The parent 3-(stannylsilyl)propyl radical was also found to isomerize to (3-stannylpropyl)silyl radical via a 1,4-Sn shift from Si to C with a rate constant of 9.3 x 10(4) s-1 at 80 degrees C. Ab initio and DFT MO calculations support a front-side attack mechanism.     

Four guaianolides from Sinodielsia yunnanensis

Four new guaianolides, sinodielides A-D (1-4), were isolated from Sinodielsia yunnanensis WOLFF together with a known polyacetylene, falcarindiol, and two known coumarins, bergapten and scopoletin. Their structures were established by spectral and X-ray analyses.     

Total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes by sequential chemoselective conjugate addition-stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of an omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester

[reaction: see text] An omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester underwent a chemoselective conjugate addition of a nitroolefin moiety with aryllithium to produce a psi-aryl-omega-nitro-alpha,beta-unsaturated ester, which was then stereoselectively cyclized by intramolecular nitro-Michael reaction giving a functionalized cyclohexane applicable to the total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes.
