Extraction of actinides like neptunium, plutonium and americium have been performed using polyphosphine polyoxides. Phosphorus compounds with (O)PCP(O) linkage exhibit very high liquid-liquid extraction properties. They demonstrate also quantitative and selective transport properties of some actinides by supported liquid membrane (SLM) technology.     

Long cycles passing through a specified edge in a 3-connected graph

We prove the following theorem: For a connected noncomplete graph G, let τ(G): = min{d_G(u) + d_G(v)|d_G(u, v) = 2}. Suppose G is a 3-connected noncomplete graph. Then through each edge of G there passes a cycle of length ≥ min{|V(G)|, τ (G) − 1}. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Addition reactions of cyclooctatetraene with 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran the benzene ring as dienophile in a [4+2] cycloaddition reaction

Addition reactions of cyclooctatetraene with 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran resulted in the formation of three 1:1 cycloadducts, 1, 2, and 3, and a 1:2 cycloadduct, 4. Single crystal x-ray analysis established 3 to be a cage compound formed by an unprecedented [4+2] cycloaddition reaction of 1 in which the double bond of the benzene moiety acted as the dienophile.     

Nitrogen plasma cleaning of Ge(1 0 0) surfaces

We propose a dry method of cleaning Ge(1 0 0) surfaces based on nitrogen plasma treatment. Our in situ Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) analyses demonstrate that surface contamination remaining after wet treatment was effectively removed by nitrogen radical irradiation at low substrate temperatures. The nitrogen plasma cleaned Ge(1 0 0) surface shows a well-ordered 2 × 1 reconstruction, which indicates the formation of a contamination-free Ge(1 0 0) surface with good crystallinity. We discuss the possible reaction mechanism considering how chemisorbed carbon impurities are removed by selective C-N bond formation and subsequent thermal desorption. These findings imply the advantage of plasma nitridation of Ge surfaces for fabricating nitride gate dielectrics, in which we can expect surface pre-cleaning at the initial stage of the plasma treatment.     

Group chase and escape with conversion from targets to chasers

We study the effect of converting caught targets into new chasers in the context of the recently proposed ‘group chase and escape’ problem. Numerical simulations have shown that this conversion can substantially reduce the lifetimes of the targets when a large number of them are initially present. At the same time, it also leads to a non-monotonic dependence on the initial number of targets, resulting in the existence of a maximum lifetime. As a counter-effect for this conversion, we further introduce self-multiplying abilities to the targets. We found that the longest lifetime exists when a suitable combination of these two effects is created.     

Spider silk violin strings with a unique packing structure generate a soft and profound timbre

We overcome the difficulties in pulling long draglines from spiders, twist bundles of dragline filaments, and succeed in preparing violin strings. The twisting is found to change the cross section shapes of filaments from circular to polygonal and to optimize the packing structure with no openings among filaments providing mechanically strong and elastic strings. The spider string signal peaks of overtones for the violin are relatively large at high frequencies, generating a soft and profound timbre. Such a preferable timbre is considered to be due to the unique polygonal packing structure which provides valuable knowledge for developing new types of materials.     

Maximal K3's and Hamiltonicity of 4‐connected claw‐free graphs

Let cl(G) denote Ryjá?ek's closure of a claw‐free graph G. In this article, we prove the following result. Let G be a 4‐connected claw‐free graph. Assume that G[N_G(T)] is cyclically 3‐connected if T is a maximal K₃ in G which is also maximal in cl(G). Then G is hamiltonian. This result is a common generalization of Kaiser et al.'s theorem [J Graph Theory 48(4) (2005), 267–276] and Pfender's theorem [J Graph Theory 49(4) (2005), 262–272]. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Cut Loci, Conjugate Loci and Poles in a Complete Riemannian Manifold

Let M be a complete Riemannian manifold. We first prove that there exist at least two geodesics connecting p and every point in M if the tangent cut locus of ${p \in M}$ is not empty and does not meet its tangent conjugate locus. It follows from this that if M admits a pole and ${p \in M}$ is not a pole, then the tangent conjugate and tangent cut loci of p have a point in common. Here we say that a point q in M is a pole if the exponential map from the tangent space T _q M at q onto M is a diffeomorphism. Using this result, we estimate the size of the set of all poles in M having a pole whose sectional curvature is pinched by those of two von Mangoldt surfaces of revolution, meaning that their Gaussian curvatures are monotone and nonincreasing with respect to the distances to their vertices.     

Software Release Games

The software release game developed in Ref. 1 is reconsidered in the framework of a two-person nonzero-sum game of timing. More precisely, noisy-type software release strategies are derived in closed form under two different criteria as well as an alternative silent-type software release strategy. Our method overcomes the fatal problem in Ref. 1 and has an advantage on computational tractability. Also, the method can be extended directly to obtain noisy-type strategies.     

Helicity induction on a poly(phenylacetylene) bearing a phosphonate residue by chiral dendrons

A series of optically active dendrons with a primary amino group at the terminal were prepared from L - or D -glutamic acid, and their helicity induction abilities for a poly(phenylacetylene) bearing a phosphonate pendant were characterized with ultraviolet–visible and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The magnitude of the Cotton effects of the polymer induced by the dendrons significantly increased upon complexation with a higher generation dendron.
