We report on craters formed by balls dropped into dry, noncohesive, granular media. By explicit variation of ball density rho(b), diameter D(b), and drop height H, the crater diameter is confirmed to scale as the 1/4 power of the energy of the ball at impact: D(c) approximately equal (rho(b)D(3)(b)H)(1/4). Against expectation, a different scaling law is discovered for the crater depth: d approximately equal (rho(3/2)(b)D(2)(b)H)(1/3). The scaling with properties of the medium is also established. The crater depth has significance for granular mechanics in that it relates to the stopping force on the ball. 相似文献

The present investigation deals with the light-driven morphological changes in multilamella films of N-methyl-4-octadecyloxystilbazolium arylcarboxylates (C18OStz+X-) cast on glass slides. The results of XRD analysis show a photostimulated layer expansion and shrinkage of the stacked thin films along the c-axis under alternative illumination at >350 and 254 nm, respectively. It was revealed that such lamellar changes could be switched either way by a reversible transformation between the mono- and bilayer units in these stacked multilamella films. Moreover, such controlled structural adjustments in the alignment could be initiated by the photocyclodimerization of the stilbazolium moieties of the arylcarboxylate salts; i.e., a monolayer-to-bilayer transformation could be induced at a stage of only 10% cyclodimer formation. The photoinduced patterning on the surface of the films was also analyzed by SEM and fluorescence microscopic investigations. 相似文献

To evaluate individual expansion coefficients composing fitting parameters of the Born-Oppenheimer corrections to Dunham's coefficients Y(ij) that have been given analytically with the Delta(B) and Delta(omega) formalism, we examined the consistency of analytic expressions for those corrections with Watson's assertion of the experimental inseparability of nonadiabatic corrections Q(a, b)(r) for a molecule AB. Derived analytic expressions in terms of optimal fitting parameters for the corrections are essential to evaluate individual expansion coefficients. These expressions also reveal redundancies between empirical correction parameters Delta(ij). A method of evaluating nonadiabatic vibrational corrections Q(a, b)(r) and adiabatic corrections S(a, b)(r) separately consistent with Watson's assertion of inseparability is presented and is applied to an analysis of spectral data of LiH. Functions Q(a, b) and S(a, b) for LiH are thus successfully evaluated; S(H, Li)(r) values agree well with those predicted simply by wobble-stretch theory. Experimental values for optimal fitting parameters r(H)(1q) and r(H)(2q) are nearly equal to those of r(Li)(1q) and r(Li)(2q), respectively, in agreement with a theoretical relation r(a)(iq)=r(b)(iq). The postulated low thermal conductivity and the possibility of altering the electronic conductivity of metal-doped clathrates with semiconducting host elements have stimulated great interest in exploring these compounds as promising thermoelectric materials. The electronic and thermal properties of the prototypical Na xSi (46) system are studied in detail here. It is shown that, despite the fact that the Na/Si clathrate is metallic, its thermal conductivity resembles that of an amorphous solid. A theoretical model is developed to rationalize the structural stability of the peculiar structural topology, and a general scheme for rational design of high efficiency thermoelectric materials is presented. 相似文献

We have measured the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) light emission spectra of Ni(1 1 0)-streaky (1 × 2) surfaces. When the tip was fixed over atomic hydrogen adsorbed on the surfaces, two types of vibration-induced structure were observed in the STM light emission spectra. One is the periodic fine structures that were already reported in our previous paper [Y. Uehara, S. Ushioda, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 (2004) 066102] and the other newly found in the present experiments is a stepwise structure that is located at the vibrational energy of hydrogen below the cutoff energy of the STM light emission. They are ascribed to different excitation mechanisms of the vibration in the STM light emission process; the periodic fine structures appear when the vibrating motion is directly excited by the electrons injected from the tip. Conversely, the stepwise structure is observed when it is excited by the electromagnetic fields confined in the tip-sample gap, i.e., by localized surface plasmons. 相似文献

Let f : U → X be a map from a connected nilpotent space U to a connected rational space X. The evaluation subgroup G
*(U, X; f), which is a generalization of the Gottlieb group of X, is investigated. The key device for the study is an explicit Sullivan model for the connected component containing f of the function space of maps from U to X, which is derived from the general theory of such a model due to Brown and Szczarba (Trans Am Math Soc 349, 4931–4951, 1997).
In particular, we show that non Gottlieb elements are detected by analyzing a Sullivan model for the map f and by looking at non-triviality of higher order Whitehead products in the homotopy group of X. The Gottlieb triviality of a fibration in the sense of Lupton and Smith (The evaluation subgroup of a fibre inclusion, 2006)
is also discussed from the function space model point of view. Moreover, we proceed to consideration of the evaluation subgroup
of the fundamental group of a nilpotent space. In consequence, the first Gottlieb group of the total space of each S
1-bundle over the n-dimensional torus is determined explicitly in the non-rational case.

The hydrophobic interfacial characterization of sugar–ester alcohol W/O microemulsion was investigated in order to develop a suitable design for reaction media. A W/O microemulsion system was prepared as a combination of sugar–ester, DK-ester-F-110 with alcohol as a cosolvent. The diameter of the sub-micron-sized water pool, the hydrophobicity of the water pool, and the fluidity of the micro-interface were studied to analyze the reactivity of Rhizopus delemar lipase in lipid hydrolysis. The diameter of the sub-micron sized water pool was measured by dynamic laser light scattering. It was proportional to the 0.33 power of Wsoln and decayed with increasing alcohol concentration. The initial reaction rate of the hydrolysis of triolein in W/O microemulsion depended on the solubilized water content. The hydrophilic character of the micro-water pool was estimated from the fluorescence wavelength indicated by Coumarin 343. The maximum initial reaction rate appeared at 450–460 nm. The fluidity of the micro-interface was investigated by fluorescence anisotropy using TMA-DPH. A suitable physicochemical reaction condition for high reactivity to occur was found, satisfying both the hydrophilicity and the fluidity of the micro-interface. 相似文献
