Fabrication and electron transport properties of epitaxial films of electron-doped 12CaO·7Al2O3 and 12SrO·7Al2O3

Epitaxial growth and electron doping of 12CaO·7Al₂O₃ (C12A7) and 12SrO·7Al₂O₃ (S12A7) are reported. The C12A7 films were prepared on Y₃Al₅O₁₂ (YAG) single-crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition at room temperature and subsequent thermal crystallization. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the films were grown epitaxially with the orientation relationship of (001)[100] C12A7 || (001)[100] YAG. For S12A7, pseudo-homoepitaxial growth was attained on the C12A7 epitaxial layer. Upon electron doping, metallic conduction was achieved in the C12A7 film and the S12A7/C12A7 double-layered films. Analyses of optical absorption spectra for the S12A7/C12A7 films provided the densities of free electrons in each layer separately. Hall measurements exhibited larger electron mobility in the S12A7/C12A7 film than those in C12A7 and S12A7 films, suggesting free electrons may be accumulated at the S12A7/C12A7 interface due presumably to a discontinuity of the cage conduction bands.     

High field magnetization of Pr1-xGdxNi single crystals

Magnetization measurements were carried out on Pr_1−xGd_xNi single crystals for x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 using pulsed magnetic fields up to 55 T and at 4.2 K. For the data observed along the c-axis there are clear indications of transitions, of the combined system of Pr and Gd moments, from a ferrimagnetic to a ferromagnetic state. The observed saturation magnetizations at 55 T and intermediate magnetizations at 1 T were well modeled assuming ferro- and ferri-magnetic structures, respectively.     

Synthesis of a new PET/layered niobate hybrid material

A new organic/inorganic hybrid material was prepared by the polymerization of bis(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) with a layered niobate compound, H₄Nb₆O₁₇, modified by 11-aminoundecanoic acid (AUA). The hybrid polymer films of BHET with H₄Nb₆O₁₇/AUA exhibited favorable characteristics, particularly of being optically clear, indicating the exfoliation and homogeneous dispersion of H₄Nb₆O₁₇ into the PET/niobate hybrid.     

Effects of meniscus on the directional growth of potassium niobate single crystals

The study of meniscus effects on the directional growth of single crystals of potassium niobate (KNbO₃) with a [110]_pc oriented seed by the top-seeded-solution-growth technique has been described. The directional growth of KNbO₃ single crystals has been illustrated for different crystallographic orientations of the crystal. Experimental results show that the shape of the solution flux meniscus, which is determined by a number of growth parameters, has a significant effect on growth rates on different 100_pc, 010_pc and 001_pc type surfaces. Findings based on this work enable one to select a dominant growth direction and hence to engineer the geometrical shaping of resultant KNbO₃ single crystals through careful control of growth parameters. Maximum crystal dimensions for the grown KNbO₃ along [100]_pc and [001]_pc achieved in this work are 34.0 and 31.2 mm, respectively.     

Aging,glass transition,supercooled and equilibrium liquid states of alkali germanate glasses studied by Brillouin scattering

The elastic properties of alkali germanate glasses, xR₂O?(100 ? x)GeO₂ (R = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs ; x = 14, 28), have been studied by Brillouin scattering in the wide temperature range up to 1200 °C. The remarkable aging effect of Brillouin shift Δν_L has been observed below a glass transition temperature T_g ≈ 500 °C. The temperature dependence of longitudinal sound velocity V_L of well annealed glasses shows the gradual decrease below T_g, while on further heating the remarkable decrease is observed above T_g. The scaled temperature dependence of V_L is nearly independent on alkali metals below the melting temperature T_m. While on further heating above T_m, the drastic decrease of V_L and increase of α_L show the remarkable alkali dependence. It may be attributed to the appearance of dynamic process related to ionic hopping of alkali metals released from glass network above T_m.     

Synthesis and Optical Properties of SiO2-Coated CeO2 Nanoparticles

Silica (SiO₂)-coated ceria (CeO₂) nanoparticles were prepared using water-in-oil microemulsion. Polyoxyethylene (15) cetylether and cyclohexane were used as a surfactant and organic solvent. SiO₂-coated CeO₂ nanoparticles were obtained by hydrolysis of metal alkoxide (tetraethylorthosilicate, TEOS) in the solution containing CeO₂ precursor nanoparticles. The effects of CeO₂ sources (Ce metal salt) and CeO₂ particle-forming agents on the morphology of SiO₂–CeO₂ particles were investigated. Observation via transmission electron microscopy revealed that the type of particle-forming agent affected the nanoparticles' morphology and that CeO₂ nanoparticles were spherically coated with SiO₂ when using oxalic acid ((COOH)₂) as a particle-forming agent of CeO₂. Furthermore, the transmittance of the particles was high in the visible region (above 400 nm) and decreased in the ultraviolet region.     

Intramolecular iodoetherification of ene or diene ketals: facile synthesis of spiroketals

A novel and rapid approach to chiral mono- or di-substituted spiroketals based on remote asymmetric induction by intramolecular iodoetherification of ene or diene ketals has been developed. This strategy concisely offers 5,5- and 5,6-spiroketals including the natural insect pheromone of the wasp.     

Ruthenium(II)-catalyzed regio- and stereoselective hydroarylation of alkynes via directed C-H functionalization

The ruthenium-catalyzed hydroarylation of alkynes with benzamides proceeds regio- and stereoselectively through a directed C-H bond cleavage. Preliminary mechanistic investigations indicate that the reaction involves amide-directed ortho-metalation, carbometalation of alkyne, and protonolysis. Similarly, phenylazoles also add to alkynes regioselectively.
