An approach for disaccharide chiron synthesis using a Ferrier-type rearrangement

We report a new approach for the synthesis of new chiral synthons in which two unsaturated sugars are linked via a glycosidic bond. The di-unsaturated disaccharide can be further functionalized using effective, highly selective methods and used in convergent syntheses of relatively complex glycoconjugates. Our approach utilizes in situ generation of active glycosyl donors via Ferrier-type rearrangement under phase-transfer conditions and subsequent reaction with a nucleophile.     

Direct analysis of herbal powders by pipette-tip electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

Conventional electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) is widely used for analysis of solution samples. The development of solid-substrate ESI-MS allows direct ionization analysis of bulky solid samples. In this study, we developed pipette-tip ESI-MS, a technique that combines pipette tips with syringe and syringe pump, for direct analysis of herbal powders, another common form of samples. We demonstrated that various herbal powder samples, including herbal medicines and food samples, could be readily online extracted and analyzed using this technique. Various powder samples, such as Rhizoma coptidis, lotus plumule, great burdock achene, black pepper, Panax ginseng, roasted coffee beans, Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis and Fructus Schisandrae Sphenantherae, were analyzed using pipette-tip ESI-MS and quality mass spectra with stable and durable signals could be obtained. Both positive and negative ion modes were attempted and various compounds including amino acids, oligosaccharides, glycosides, alkaloids, organic acids, ginosensides, flavonoids and lignans could be detected. Principal component analysis (PCA) based on the acquired mass spectra allowed rapid differentiation of closely related herbal species.     

Model potentials in studies of atomic electron density distribution

In density functional theory (DFT ), a many-electron problem for the electron density in atoms may be reduced, according to the Kohn-Sham scheme, to a one-electron problem. In the present work, a variational model is proposed which leads, within some assumptions, to the set of equations describing the change of the electron density ρ and energy ϵ during the ionization process. It is shown that the one-electron density contributions are not necessarily spherically symmetric, but assume the symmetry which depends upon the symmetry of the positive field. A few nonspherically symmetric potentials are studied in the present article. The nonlinear differential equation for density r is formulated and solved for Coulombic, Fues-Kratzer, and Hartmann potentials. The solutions and some particular examples are presented. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A deflection system to reduce the interference from post-source decay product ions in photodissociation tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometry

A deflection system consisting of four deflectors was designed and used to reduce the interference from post-source decay (PSD) product ions in photodissociation (PD) tandem time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry. For simple protonated peptides generated by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, the presence of PSD product ions at the laser irradiation spot was found to noticeably alter the minor peaks in the PD spectra even though the major ones were hardly affected. Other benefits from the use of the deflection system such as the improvement in the resolving power in PSD tandem mass spectra are discussed.     

Soft-templating synthesis and adsorption properties of mesoporous carbons with embedded silver nanoparticles

Mesoporous carbons containing silver nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized under acidic conditions by employing resorcinol and formaldehyde as carbon precursors and triblock copolymer EO₁₀₁PO₅₆EO₁₀₁ (Lutrol F127) as a soft template. Silver nanoparticles of ∼90 nm were added to the synthesis mixture to achieve 10 wt% and 20 wt% of Ag loading in the carbon. Also, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was introduced to the system in order to improve adsorption properties of the silver-carbon composites and to reinforce its structure. The resulting carbons with incorporated silver nanoparticles featured high surface areas, large total pore volumes and primary mesopores in the range between ∼6–7 nm.     

The synthesis of piperidine nucleoside analogs—a comparison of several methods to access the introduction of nucleobases

This work deals with the synthesis of piperidine and hydroxypiperidine analogs of nucleosides. Starting from commercially available 3-hydroxypiperidine, proline or 4-hydroxyproline, a series of piperidine derivatives of both purine and pyrimidine nucleobases was prepared. Various methods of nucleobase attachment were evaluated. The prepared compounds were tested for cytostatic, antibacterial, and antiviral properties but no significant activity was found.
