Simultaneous ultramicrodetermination of heterogeneous halogens in organic compounds

The simultaneous ultramicrodetermination of heterogeneous halogens in organic compounds was carried out by the potentiometric titration with 0.002 M silver nitrate after the sample was decomposed by the flask combustion method. In examination of the titration, it was found that clear potential break at the end point was obtained by controlling the delivery speed of the titrant at 0.2 ml/min or slower and the temperature of the solution to be titrated at ca. 10 °C when chloride ion is present. The error due to coprecipitation during the titration and the effect of the mole ratio of heterogeneous halide ions in the sample solution was examined and discussed. The analysis of organic halogen compounds resulted in an error of within 0.4% and standard deviation of less than 0.25%.     

The annealing behavior of hydrogen implanted into Al-1.5 at.% Si alloy

We have studied effects of added elements as well as defects on trap-sites of hydrogen in metals. For the purpose, we observed depth profiles and thermal behaviors of hydrogen implanted into Al-1.5 at.% Si alloy samples in an implantation-temperature range of liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT) to 373 K at different doses. The results were compared with those for pure aluminum samples. It was found that hydrogen is trapped as molecules in grain boundaries of Al/Si.     

Cycloaddition of oxetane and carbon dioxide catalyzed by tetraphenylstibonium iodide

Trimethylene carbonate was readily obtained in the reaction of oxetane and carbon dioxide in the presence of tetraphenylstibonium iodide.     

Aminyl radical cyclization by means of anodic oxidation. Stereoselective synthesis of cis-1-methyl-2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidines

Neutral aminyl radicals generated by anodic oxidation of lithium alkenylamides 2 undergo a stereoselective cyclization to give $\text{cis}$-1-methyl-2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidines 4. Their $\text{cis}$ stereochemistry was confirmed by a comparison with $\text{trans}$-1,2-dimethyl-5-phenylpyrrolidine, the structure of which was established by X-ray crystallographic analysis of its quarternary ammonium bromide 6.     

Synthesis and functionalities of poly(N-vinylalkylamide). V. Control of a lower critical solution temperature of poly(N-vinylalkylamide)

N-vinyl-n-butyramide (NVBA), N-vinylisovaleramide (NVIVA), and N-vinyl-n-valeramide (NVVA), which are N-vinylalkylamides with different alkyl groups were synthesized and their solution behavior in a polymeric form was examined. Copolymers of N-vinylisobutyramide (NVIBA) with N-vinylacetamide (NVA), NVIBA with NVVA, and NVVA with NVA were prepared by the solution polymerization to control the LCSTs. The resultant polyNVBA showed a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) sharply at 32°C, but polyN-vinylisovaleramide (polyNVIVA) and polyN-vinyl-n-valeramide(polyNVVA) that have n-butyl and isobutyl groups, respectively, on their side chains were insoluble even in cold water. The water solubility of the resulting polymers was found to vary, depending on the molecular shapes as well as the side chain length of the alkyl groups in question. The copolymers consisting of NVVA, NVIBA, and NVA in water showed LCSTs sharply between 10 and 90°C, depending on changes in their comonomer content. It was found that the changes in LCST that are caused by the incorporation of comonomers are due to changes in the overall hydrophilicity of the polymer. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
