Preparation of 2-fluoromalonic esters and related compounds from hexafluoropropene

Dimethyl and diethyl fluoromalonates were prepared from hexafluoropropene by its exhaustive alcoholysis or alternatively its ammonolysis and alcoholysis. Fluoromalonates thus obtained or their alkylated derivatives were condensed with o-phenylenediamine or its substituted derivatives to give a number of 1H-3-fluoro-1,5-dibenzodiazepin-2,4(3H,5H)-diones.     

FLAVIN-PHOTOSENSITIZED MONOMERIZATION OF DIMETHYLTHYMINE CYCLOBUTANE DIMER IN THE PRESENCE OF MAGNESIUM PERCHLORATE

We have investigated the photosensitized monomerization of the cis,syn -cyclobutane dimer of 1,3-di-methylthymine using riboflavin tetraacetate and a 5-deazaflavin derivative as photosensitizer. Although little monomerization of the dimer is induced by photoexcitation of the flavins in the absence of any additives, the flavins can function as an efficient photosensitizer in the presence of magnesium perchlorate. Mechanistic studies involving spectroscopic, quantum-yield and flash-photolysis measurements demonstrated that the photosensitized monomerization exclusively proceeds through electron transfer from the dimer to the triplet flavins complexed with Mg²⁺. The effects of magnesium perchlorate are compared with those on the chloranil-photosensitized monomerization and also with the effects of HClO₄ on the flavin-photosensitized reaction.     

The synthesis of isoquinoline alkaloid and its related compounds using alanine derivatives as chiral auxiliaries

Chiral 1-substituted isoquinoline derivatives, which were obtained by the reaction using alanine derivatives as chiral auxiliaries, were transformed to (S)-2,3,9,10,11-pentamethoxyhomoprotoberberine (7) and a synthetic intermediate for O-methylkreysigine (9) in good yields and high stereoselectivity. The corresponding chiral allyl derivative of isoquinoline was transformed to a pyrrolidinoisoquinoline (16) in a highly enantioselective manner.     

Rate of spontaneous deactivation of styryl and α-methylstyryl carbanions

The deactivation of α-methylstyryl and styryl carbanions followed by spectral change and titration was studied kinetically. First-order rate constants were obtained for the deactivation of oligo-α-methylstyryl lithium, disodium, and dipotassium in tetrahydrofuran and of polystyryl potassium in varying degrees of polymerization in benzene that contained a small amount of tetrahydrofuran and n-hexane. It was observed that the addition of cryptate [222] exerts a significant effect on the system of oligo-α-methylstyryl disodium in tetrahydrofuran. The effect of dilution, degree of polymerization of the polymer, and counterions on the rate of deactivation of carbanions was discussed.     

Synthesis and characterization of flavylium salts having three types color depending on recrystallization conditions

Three types of flavylium salts (FVs, yellow, green and red) have been synthesized and the colors depended on recrystallization conditions. The existence of these color states was confirmed by diffuse reflectance spectra. The spectra were almost the same as the absorption spectra in ethanol solution. The molecular state of FVs in crystals will be the same as that in solutions. The crystal colors of the FVs are controlled by the recrystallization conditions.     

Rapid and high-resolution analysis of geometric polyprenol homologues by connected octadecylsilylated monolithic silica columns in high-performance liquid chromatography

A Chromolith Performance octadecylsilyl (ODS) monolithic silica column (Merck) was compared with a conventional microparticulate ODS-bonded silica column in the high-performance liquid chromatography separation of natural polyprenols. A system comprising two connected monolithic columns afforded an equivalent separation at half the analysis time of the conventional method. Furthermore, ten connected columns achieved a tremendously high-resolution separation, in which the complicated series of homologous polyprenols with geometric isomerism were fully separated.     

Oxysulfide Sm(2)Ti(2)S(2)O(5) as a stable photocatalyst for water oxidation and reduction under visible light irradiation (lambda < or = 650 nm)

A Ti-based oxysulfide, Sm(2)Ti(2)S(2)O(5), was studied as a visible light-driven photocatalyst. Under visible light (440 nm < or = lambda < or = 650 nm) irradiation, Sm(2)Ti(2)S(2)O(5) with a band gap of approximately 2 eV evolved H(2) or O(2) from aqueous solutions containing a sacrificial electron donor (Na(2)S-Na(2)SO(3) or methanol) or acceptor (Ag(+)) without any noticeable degradation. This oxysulfide is, therefore, a stable photocatalyst with strong reduction and oxidation abilities under visible-light irradiation. The electronic band structure of Sm(2)Ti(2)S(2)O(5) was calculated using the plane-wave-based density functional theory (DFT) program. It was elucidated that the S3p orbitals constitute the upper part of the valence band and these orbitals make an essential contribution to the small band gap energy. The conduction and valence bands' positions of Sm(2)Ti(2)S(2)O(5) were also determined by electrochemical measurements. It indicated that conduction and valence bands were found to have satisfactory potentials for the reduction of H(+) to H(2) and the oxidation of H(2)O to O(2) at pH = 8. This is consistent with the results of the photocatalytic reactions.     

NMR studies of phosphinenickel(0) complexes of ethyl methacrylate Ni(PR3)2(CH2=C(CH3)COOC2H5)

¹³C NMR data are given for a series of phosphinenickel(0) complexes of ethyl methacrylate (ema), Ni(PR₃)₂(CH₂=C(CH₃)COOC₂H₅) (PR₃ = PPh₃ (Ia), PEtPh₂ (Ib), PEt₂Ph (Ic), PMe₂Ph (Id), PEt₃ (Ie)). The olefinic carbon signals of ema shift upfield by 71.5–86.5 ppm on coordination, the magnitude of the upfield shift increasing with increase in the bacisity of the phosphine ligand. The effect of the basicity of PR₃ is discussed on the basis of the back-bonding from Ni to ema. Variable temperature¹H NMR studies reveal that the ema of Id, the complex having the least sterically demanding phosphine ligands, exchanges with free ema in toluene on the NMR time scale. The dependence of the rate of exchange on the concentration of ema shows that the exchange proceeds through anS_N2 mechanism. The activation parameters are: ΔH₂₇₃^≠ 2.75 kcal/mol, ΔG₂₇₃^≠ 12.7 kcal/mol, ΔS₂₇₃^≠ ?37 e.u. The³¹P NMR spectra of the complexes show two doublets when the exchange is frozen out, indicating the inequivalence of the two phosphine ligands in the ema-coordinated complex. The difference in the³¹P chemical shifts of the two coordinated tertiary phosphines increases with increase in the basicity of the PR₃ ligand.     

Resonance energies of meta-stable dtµ*

Using the coupled rearrangement channel method, we have calculated resonance energies for meta-stable states of the molecular ion dtµ^* associated with the adiabatic 3 potential. The vacuum polarization effect was taken into account by direct inclusion of the Uehling potential in our three-body Hamiltonian. Comparing with the solution of the pure Coulombic Schrödinger equation a shift of approximately +0.1 eV is found. Thus the infinite series of states of the Coulombic Schrödinger equation becomes truncated. Eleven states remain semi-bound, five of them with binding energy smaller than the dissociation energy of the D₂ molecule, facilitating formation of dtµ^* in tµ(2s)-D₂ scattering by means of the Vesman-mechanism.     

Studies on monobactams II. Synthesis and β-lactamase inhibitory activity of 4α-methyl-3-[(thien-2-yl)-methylene]-2-azetidinone-1-sulfonate

Two monobactam derivatives, potassium 4-methyl-(3E)-[(thien-2-yl)methylene]-2-azetidinone-1-sulfonate and its (3Z)-isomer, were prepared and evaluated for their -lactamase inhibitory activities.
