Flow-injection determination of creatine in animal tissues

After deproteination of samples with trichloroacetic acid, creatine is determined by reaction with 1-naphthol and biacetyl, based on a stopped-flow method. The calibration graph is linear over the range 0–250 mg l^?1, and recoveries from muscle samples are quantitative.     

An Improved HPLC Post-Column Methodology for the Identification of Free Radical Scavenging Phytochemicals in Complex Mixtures

The importance of natural antioxidants principally relates to their health-promoting properties. The discovery of new sources of established compounds or more potent compounds is a costly exercise and any technique capable of aiding this procedure would be highly significant. An approach combining chromatographic separation, component analysis and post-column identification of free radical scavenging has been reported. However, its effectiveness is dependent upon various factors and the number of samples analyzed without operator intervention is restricted. A more applicable technique using a 10% to 100% methanol with 2% acetic acid mobile phase and a citric acid-sodium citrate buffered methanolic 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical reagent is presented, whereby free radical scavengers can be detected within crude extracts of variable polarity without special considerations. As an illustration, acetone, 70% (aq.) methanol and acetonitrile-soluble extracts were prepared from sage (Salvia officinalis L.) for extraction of polar and non-polar radical scavengers and analyzed. Radical scavenging components were identified as carnosic, caffeic and rosmarinic acids and luteolin-7-O-glycoside. Others radical scavengers were tentatively identified as benzoic and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, flavonoids and diterpenoids. Through the application of this technique, carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid were identified as the principal free radical scavengers.     

Possible Mechanisms of Intercalation

Recent knowledge of the kinetics and intercalation mechanisms are summarized and accompanied by examples of intercalation reactions of water and ethanol into anhydrous vanadyl phosphate and redox intercalation of alkali metal cations into vanadyl phosphate dihydrate. Three possible mechanisms of intercalation are presented which are based on: (i) a concept of exfoliation of layers; (ii) the formation of stages and randomly stacked layers; (iii) co-existence of intercalated and non-intercalated parts of crystals of the host separated by an advancing phase boundary. The corresponding kinetic curves are ascribed to mechanisms (ii) and (iii).     

H-quadrupolar coupling-based analysis of stereochemical and regiochemical memory in the Pd-catalysed allylic alkylation of iso-cinnamyl type substrates employing the chiral monophosphine ligands ‘MOP’ and ‘MAP’

The reaction of iso-cinnamyl acetate with NaC(Me)(CO₂Me)₂, catalysed by Pd-‘MOP’ (MOP=2-methoxy-2′-diphenylphosphino-1,1′-binaphthalene) is known to proceed with a regiochemical memory effect that results in the predominant generation of the branched alkylation product. The analogous reaction employing ‘MAP’ as ligand (MAP=2-N,N-dimethylamino-2′-diphenylphosphino-1,1′-binaphthalene) proceeds with ‘normal’ regioselectivity to generate predominantly the linear isomer of product. A ²H-NMR based analysis, employing quadrupolar coupling in a chiral liquid crystal matrix, has been developed to facilitate the simultaneous study of the regiochemical and stereochemical outcome of the reaction of both enantiomers of iso-cinnamyl ester substrates in ²H-labelled but racemic samples. The analysis allows the comparison of relative rates of two competing isomerisation processes occurring in the π-allyl intermediates in the Pd-catalysed reaction, one of which facilitates asymmetric induction, the other resulting in loss of regiochemical memory. It is demonstrated that the two processes are partially coupled and that this then limits the attainment of high global enantiomeric excess in the branched product to reactions that proceed with low regiochemical retention. A key factor for the observation of high regiochemical memory is found to be the nucleophilicity of the malonate anion and the electrophilicity of the Pd-π-allyl intermediate with reduction in the reactivity of either partner resulting in the onset of substantial loss of memory.     

Studies on the Complexes of N,N′-Bis[o-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene]ethylenediamine with Transition Metal Ions

The thermodynamic parameters for the interaction of Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺, Cd²⁺, andAg⁺ with the new title ligand have been determined by titration calorimetry in 50% THF–methanol (V/V) at 25 °C.Ag⁺ exhibited remarkably higher complexation selectivity.Ag⁺ and several transition metal ions have been transportedusing this ligand as carrier in a bulk liquid membrane. CompetitiveAg⁺–M²⁺ transport studies have also beencarried out for the same system. In this membrane transport study, high transport of Ag⁺ was observed in both single and competitiveAg⁺–M²⁺ transport studies. The complexformation of N,N-bis[o-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene]ethylenediamine (P₂N₂) with silver,[Ag(P₂N₂)] (NO₃), (1) is reported. Complex 1 has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. 1 ismonoclinic, space group P2_1/n (No. 14), with cell dimensionsa = 13.398(4) , b=12.577(5) , c = 21.521(4) , =100.14(2) , V = 3570(2) ³ and Z = 4.     

Synthesis and reactivity of 1,2-bis(chlorodimethylgermyl)carborane and 1,2-bis(bromodimethylstannyl)carborane

The 1,2-bis(chlorogermyl)- (1) and 1,2-bis(bromostannyl)carborane (2) have been prepared by the reaction of dilithio-o-carborane with Me(2)GeCl(2) and Me(2)SnBr(2), respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 are found to be good precursors for the synthesis of a variety of cyclization compounds. The Wurtz-type coupling reaction of 1 and 2 using sodium metal afforded the four-membered digerma compound 3 and five-membered tristanna compound 4, respectively. The salt elimination reactions of 1 and 2 using Li(2)N(t)Bu and Li(2)PC(6)H(5) afforded the cyclic products [structure: see text]. The 1,2-bis(dimethylgermyl)carborane 9 and 1,2-bis(dimethylstannyl)carborane 10 were prepared by the reaction of 1 and 2 with sodium cyanoborohydride. The reactions of 9 and 10 with Pd(PPh(3))(4) afforded the bis(germyl)palladium 12 and bis(stannyl)palladium 13 complexes, respectively.     

Anatase-Rutile Transition of Precipitated Titanium Oxide with Alcohol Rinsing

The effect of alcohol washing on the anatase-rutile transition of precipitated titanium oxide was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry. Alcohol (butanol) rinsing accelerated the anatase-rutile transition of precipitated titanium oxide powder so that the onset temperature of transition decreased drastically from 800 degrees C for water-washed powder to 550 degrees C for alcohol-rinsed powder. Alternation of transition kinetics and mechanisms by rinsing media could be confirmed from the analysis of temperature and time dependence of rutile content. The attributability of the chemical state of anatase after crystallization, which contained H(2)O, OH, and organic residues, to the change of transition kinetics with alcohol rinsing will be discussed. Two mechanisms, the effect of residual organics and/or H(2)O(OH), could be suggested on the basis of analysis of the difference between chemical states of water-washed anatase and alcohol-rinsed powder. Metal-dependent regioselective oxidative coupling of 5,10,15-triarylporphyrins with DDQ-Sc(OTf)3 and formation of an oxo-quinoidal porphyrin

[reaction: see text] Regioselectivity of the oxidative coupling of 5,10,15-triarylporphyrin metal complexes with DDQ-Sc(OTf)(3) was dependent on the central metal and meso-aryl substituent. Oxo-quinoidal porphyrin was obtained from Ni(II) porphyrin under the same conditions.     

Neighbouring group participation in formation of condensed azines. Formation of pyrazolo(3,4-b)pyrazines,isoxazolo(4,5-b)pyrazines and isothiazolo(5,4-b)pyridine

Pyrazine- and pyridinecarboxamidoximes with an amino, potentially tautomeric hydroxy or mercapto group inortho position could be transformed in the appropriate condensed azines. In this manner, representatives of pyrazolo(3,4-b)pyrazine, isoxazolo(4,5-b)pyrazine and isothiazolo(5,4-b)pyridine ring system were synthesized and some transformations investigated.Presented in part at the 8th International Congress of Heterocyclic Chemistry, Graz, 1981.     

Strukturanalyse organischer Sulfide mit Hilfe der Gras-Chromatographie

Zusammenfassung Eine Methode der Identifizierung von Alkyl- und Arylgruppen organischer Sulfide wurde ausgearbeitet, die die Spaltung dieser Stoffe mit Raney-Nickel zur gaschromatographischen Bestimmung der dabei entstandenen Kohlenwasserstoffe ausnützt.

Summary A method was developed for identifying alkyl- and aryl groups of organic sulfides. The method employs the cleavage of these materials with Raney nickel for the gas chromatographic determination of the resulting hydrocarbons.
