Nonfactorization and the decaysD s +→φπ +,φρ + andφl + ν l

Using the experimentally measured values ofx=A ₂(0)/A ₁(0) andy=V(0)/A ₁(0) and the measured ratiosR _st=Γ(D _s ⁺ →φl ⁺ ν _l)/Γ(D _ins ⁺ →φπ ⁺) andR _h=Γ(D _s ⁺ →φρ ⁺)/Γ(D _s ⁺ →φπ ⁺), we present evidence for significant nonfactorization contribution in the decay amplitude forD _s ⁺ →φπ ⁺. We analyze the role of nonfactorization inD _s ⁺ →φρ ⁺ and conclude that present data onR _h are consistent with factorization inD _s ⁺ →φρ ⁺. A measurement of polarization inD _s ⁺ →φρ ⁺ would greatly assist our analysis.     

Free energy of mixing of cross-linked polymer blends

Free energy of mixing of cross-linked polymer blends is derived, as a modification to the Flory-Huggins-de Gennes free energy functional for linear polymer blends. The latter arrives from the assumption of mean-field, short-range thermal interactions among ideal Gaussian chains. However, upon cross-linking a linear chain, the chain no longer remains Gaussian; new chain architectures belying the threadlike image of linear chains emerge. Fractal dimensions of these nonlinear chain clusters convene and command new entropic interactions. Topological constraints by cross-links introduce long-range nonequilibrium elastic forces. Relatively shorter range steric repulsions between fractal network surfaces may arrive if cross-linking is carried out inside the blend's thermodynamically unstable region. Modified free energy has been used to highlight experiments on phase instability of cross-linked polymer blends.     

Radiationless transitions in trivalent lanthanide ions embedded in solids

Radiationless transitions in lanthanide ions embedded in glassy and crystalline hosts have been briefly reviewed. The correlations of multiphonon relaxation rates with energy gaps, vibrational frequencies, temperatures and electronic symmetries have been discussed. The essence of various theories, such as Nth order methods, non-adiabatic Hamiltonian method, dynamic coupling model has also been presented.

Regioselective synthesis of the bridged tricyclic core of Garcinia natural products via intramolecular aryl acrylate cycloadditions

[reaction: see text] Two different routes to the tricyclic core of Garcinia-derived natural products are described. The first approach is based on a tandem Claisen/Diels-Alder rearrangement and delivers the desired lactone 14. The second approach, employing a Wessely oxidation/Diels-Alder protocol, leads to the same caged heterocycle, albeit with modified constitution.     

Adsorptive stripping voltammetric analysis of 2,4,6-tri(2′pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine at a mercury electrode

The redox behaviour of adsorbed species of 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3-5-triazine (TPTZ) at the surface of a mercury electrode was examined using cycling voltammetry. Based on the adsorption and accumulation of TPTZ at the charged mercury surface cathodic adsorptive stripping voltammetry (CSV) is applied for the trace determination of TPTZ using a differential pulse (DP) technique. Experimental and operational parameters for the quantitative analysis of TPTZ are optimized and the detection limit was found to be 3×10^–9 mol/l. The effect of some interferences, e.g. organic compounds, cations and anions, are investigated.     

A simple and green procedure for the conjugate addition of thiols to conjugated alkenes employing polyethylene glycol (PEG) as an efficient recyclable medium

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is found to be an inexpensive, nontoxic, environmentally friendly reaction medium for the conjugate addition of thiols to conjugated alkenes to afford the corresponding adducts in excellent yields under mild and neutral conditions. Products of undesirable side reactions resulting from polymerization are not observed. The use of PEG avoids the use of either acid or base catalysts for this conversion and moreover PEG can be recovered and reused.     

Biologically active compounds through catalysis: efficient synthesis of N-(heteroarylcarbonyl)-N'-(arylalkyl)piperazines

A practical route for the synthesis of new biologically active 5-HT(2 A) receptor antagonists has been developed. In only three catalytic steps, this class of central nervous system (CNS) active compounds can be synthesized efficiently with high diversity. As the initial step, an anti-Markovnikov addition of amines to styrenes provides an easy route to N-(arylalkyl)piperazines, which constitute the core structure of the active molecules. Here, base-catalyzed hydroamination reactions of styrenes with benzylated piperazine proceeded in high yield even at room temperature. After catalytic debenzylation, the free amines were successfully carbonylated with different aromatic and heteroaromatic halides and carbon monoxide to yield the desired compounds in good to excellent yields. The two key reactions, base-catalyzed hydroamination of styrenes and palladium-catalyzed aminocarbonylation of haloarenes/heterocycles, showed tolerance towards various functional groups, thereby demonstrating the potential to synthesize a wide variety of new derivatives of this promising class of pharmaceuticals.
