Natural and artificial radionuclides as a tool for sedimentation studies in the Arctic region

Natural ²¹⁰Pb and artificial ¹³⁷Cs were applied for estimation of sedimentation rates for 14 cores collected in the White Sea, Franz Victoria and Novaya Zemlya troughs. Vertical profiles of ¹³⁷Cs with high resolution (0.5–1 cm) are presented for 18 cores. The agreement between sedimentation rates obtained from ²¹⁰Pb age-dating and ¹³⁷Cs vertical profiles was found. Two maxima of ¹³⁷Cs specific activity were observed in the cores near the North Dvina and Onega mouths, which may be correspond to the Chernobyl accident and global fallouts in early 1960-s.     

α- and β-phases of the Al-Mn-Si system

Homogeneity regions and crystal structures of ternary α- and β-phases based on Al₉Mn₂Si and Al₉Mn₃Si have been investigated at a temperature of 823 K by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray, and electron probe microanalysis techniques. It is established that the α-phase is formed in the composition region of 7.4–15.9 at % of Si at a manganese isoconcentrate of ～18 at %. When the manganese concentration is 24–26%, the β-phase has a homogeneity region from 3.7 to 18.5 at % of Si and is situated parallel to the Al-Si side. A fragment of the isothermal section for the Al-Mn-Si system in an aluminum-rich alloy region has been constructed.     

Logarithmic concavity of series in gamma ratios

We find two-sided bounds and prove non-negativeness of Taylor coefficients for the Turán determinants of power series with coefficients involving the ratio of gamma-functions. We consider these series as functions of simultaneous shifts of the arguments of the gamma-functions located in the numerator and the denominator. The results are then applied to derive new inequalities for the Gauss hypergeometric function, the incomplete normalized beta-function and the generalized hypergeometric series. This communication continues the research of various authors who investigated logarithmic convexity and concavity of hypergeometric functions in parameters.     

Expansion of the correlation functions of the grand canonical ensemble in powers of the activity

A study is made of the grand canonical ensemble of single-component systems of particles in a region . A new representation of the Ursell functions is given. In it an Ursell function is represented as a sum of products of Mayer and Boltzmann functions over the subset of connected graphs labeled by trees. Such a representation greatly reduces the complexity of the structure of these functions. A new definition of all-round tending of the region to infinity is given. The relationship between this definition and the well-known definition of tending of the set to infinity in the sense of Fisher is demonstrated in examples. It is shown that in the case of all-round tending of the set to infinity a term-by-term passage to the limit can be made in the series in Ruelle's representation of the correlation functions as a finite sum of finite products of convergent series. The domain of convergence of the obtained expansions is discussed. As examples, the expansions of the single-particle and binary correlation functions are obtained.All-Union Correspondence Institute of the Food Industry. Numerical simulation and investigation of working process features in high-duty combustion chambers

Basic concepts of a numerical simulation method of two-phase turbulent flows with combustion are stated. Results of computations in gas generators and combustion chambers of liquid-propellant rocket engines operating on oxygen and methane are presented. Features of the processes of evaporation, mixture, flow, and combustion of the propellant within chambers with tree types of injectors, i.e., coaxial-jet gas-liquid, liquid-liquid monopropellant and bipropellant impinging-jets, are studied.     

On the angular distribution of extensive air showers

Angular distributions of extensive air showers with different number of charged particles in the range 2.5 × 10⁵–4 × 10⁷ are derived using the experimental data obtained with the EAS MSU array. Possible approximations of the obtained distributions with different empiric functions available in literature, are analyzed. It is shown that the exponential function provides the best approximation of the angular distributions in the sense of the χ² criterion.     

Nonlinear dielectric relaxation of polar molecules in a strong ac electric field: steady state response

The nonlinear dielectric relaxation ac stationary response of an assembly of rigid polar molecules acted on by strong superimposed external dc E0 and ac E1(t)=E(1) cos omegat electric fields is evaluated in the context of the noninertial rotational diffusion model. The calculation proceeds by expanding the relaxation functions f(n)(t) (the expectation value of the Legendre polynomials P(n)), which describe the nonlinear relaxation of the system, as a Fourier series in the time domain. Hence, an infinite hierarchy of recurrence equations for the Fourier components of f(n)(t) is obtained. The exact solution of this hierarchy can be obtained in terms of a matrix continued fraction, so allowing us to evaluate the ac nonlinear response. For a weak ac field our results are in complete agreement with previous solutions obtained by perturbation methods. Diagrams showing the behavior of the in-phase and out-of-phase components of the electric polarization are presented.     

Calculation of longitudinal susceptibility of superparamagnetic particles

Simple analytical expressions are derived for the complex longitudinal susceptibility χ_∥(ω) of a system of noninteracting superparamagnetic particles with uniaxial and cubic anisotropy within the continuous-diffusion model in the cases of moderate and strong damping.
