Chromatographic separation and determination of Zr in bauxites and aluminum alloys

Summary A simple thin-layer chromatographic method for the complete separation of Zr from aluminum is described. The optimum solvent composition is evaluated by means of the simplex method of optimization. Quantitative determination and regression analysis is carried out.     

Thermal analysis and X-ray studies of chiral ferroelectric liquid crystalline materials and their binary mixtures

Summary Thermal properties of a homologous series of ferroelectric liquid crystals S-(-)-[4-(2-n-alkoxy-propionyloxy)]biphenyl-4'-[n-alkoxy-(3,5-dimethyl)]benzoate have been investigated by polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The mesophases were identified and confirmed by X-ray too. Three binary mixtures were prepared from the individual homologues. In one of the mixtures (Mix1), the ferroelectric SmC* phase has broadened and became enantiotropic. This mesophase remained monotropic in the other two mixtures (Mix2, Mix3). The chiral nematic N* phase did not appear in Mix1, but remained monotropic for the other two mixtures. Two molecular parameters, the layer spacing and the average intermolecular distance have been calculated from the X-ray results for the homologues and their mixtures. An intercalated tail-to-tail packing of molecules was found both in the single compounds and their mixtures resulting in the layer spacing about half of the molecular length of the single compounds.     

Improved synthesis of functionalized 5,6-dihydro-pyrimido[4,5-b][1,4]oxazepines

Novel synthetic approaches toward 5,6-dihydro-pyrimido[4,5-b][1,4]oxazepines were reported that led to successful introduction of poorly reactive anilines and various 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes to this therapeutically relevant scaffold. More extensive SAR studies on this scaffold hence became possible.     

Sol-Gel Fabrication and Properties of Silica Cores of Optical Fibers Doped with Yb3+, Er3+, Al2 O3 or TiO2

Optical cores of preforms for drawing optical fibers doped with Er3+ and Yb3+ were fabricated by the sol-gel method with the aim of increasing the thickness of glass layers coated in a single coating cycle and to determine the relation between the preparation conditions and optical properties of the fibers. Al2O3-P2O5-SiO2 and TiO2-P2O5-SiO2 glasses have been studied as matrices for entrapping the rare-earth elements. Input sols have been prepared from silicon and titanium alkoxides, AlCl3, ErCl3, YbCl3, POCl3, water and a modifier under acidic catalysis of HCl. The sols were coated on the inner wall of a silica substrate tube and the gel layers were sintered at high temperatures up to 2000°C after which the tube was collapsed into the preform. Continuous and homogenous glass films with the maximum thickness of about 8 m were fabricated. The influence of high-temperature heat treatment of the layers on their composition and optical attenuation was observed. The amplified stimulated emission of Er3+ around 1.55 m was measured under the excitation of the fibers by an Nd : YAG laser at 1.064 m.     

Ligand-assisted reduction of osmium tetroxide with molecular hydrogen via a [3+2] mechanism

Osmium tetroxide is reduced by molecular hydrogen in the presence of ligands in both polar and nonpolar solvents. In CHCl3 containing pyridine (py) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), OsO4 is reduced by H2 to the known Os(VI) dimers L2Os(O)2(mu-O)2Os(O)2L2 (L2 = py2, phen). However, in the absence of ligands in CHCl3 and other nonpolar solvents, OsO4 is unreactive toward H2 over a week at ambient temperatures. In basic aqueous media, H2 reduces OsO4(OH)n(n-) (n = 0, 1, 2) to the isolable Os(VI) complex, OsO2(OH)4(2-), at rates close to that found in py/CHCl3. Depending on the pH, the aqueous reactions are exergonic by deltaG = -20 to -27 kcal mol(-1), based on electrochemical data. The second-order rate constants for the aqueous reactions are larger as the number of coordinated hydroxide ligands increases, k(OsO4) = 1.6(2) x 10(-2) M(-1) s(-1) < k(OsO4(OH)-) = 3.8(4) x 10(-2) M(-1) s(-1) < k(OsO4(OH)2(2-)) = 3.8(4) x 10(-1) M(-1) s(-1). The observation of primary deuterium kinetic isotope effects, k(H2)/k(D2) = 3.1(3) for OsO4 and 3.6(4) for OsO4(OH)-, indicates that the rate-determining step in each case involves H-H bond cleavage. Density functional calculations and thermochemical arguments favor a concerted [3+2] addition of H2 across two oxo groups of OsO4(L)n and argue against H* or H- abstraction from H2 or [2+2] addition of H2 across one Os=O bond. The [3+2] mechanism is analogous to that of alkene addition to OsO4(L)n to form diolates, for which acceleration by added ligands has been extensively documented. The observation that ligands also accelerate H2 addition to OsO4(L)n highlights the analogy between these two reactions.     

Convenient synthesis of arylpropargyl aldehydes and 4-aryl-3-butyn-2-ones from arylacetylenes and amide acetals

The reaction of arylacetylenes 1 and N,N-dimethylformamide dimethylacetal (2a, DMF-DMA) afforded the corresponding arylpropargyl aldehydes 3 in moderate yields. Similarly, the reaction of 1 and N,N-dimethylacetamide dimethylacetal (2b, DMA-DMA) gave 4-aryl-3-butyn-2-ones 4.
