Synthesis of tetrakis(triethylsiloxy)titanium and tetrakis(triethylsiloxy)tin

Summary By the metathetic reaction of sodium triethylsiloxide with titanium tetrachloride and with tin tetrachloride, tetrakis(triethylsiloxy)titanium and tetrakis(triethylsiloxy)tin were synthesized.

The procedure ofBrewster was employed in the calculation of the molecular rotation of optically active derivatives of 1,2-tetramethylene-ferrocene, which (in addition to ferrocene asymmetry) contain asymmetric (chiral) centers in the cyclohexene part of the molecule. Satisfactory agreement between the calculated and observed values for the rotations was obtained throughout. In one case, the calculation of the absolute configuration of the planarasymmetric part was successful; it was found to be in agreement with the results of an independent (experimental) method employed earlier. The absolute conformation of some of the ferrocene derivatives is discussed with the aid of optical circular dichroism.     

Catalytic flow-injection determination of copper at nanogram levels by using color formation of N-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine with m-phenylenediamine in the presence of pyridine and ammonia as activators

A spectrophotometric flow-injection method for determining copper(II) has been developed. It is based on the catalytic effect of copper(II) on the oxidative coupling of N-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine with m-phenylenediamine in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Pyridine and ammonia as activators increased the absorbance for the copper(II)-catalyzed coloration, and the dye formed was stabilized by adding a non-ionic surfactant. The working range of the method was 0.1-2.0 ng ml(-1) of cooper(II) with a relative standard deviation 2.4% at a sampling rate of 30 h(-1). Interference from iron(III) was effectively suppressed by citric acid. Copper in natural water samples can be determined easily.     

Low-temperature adsorption of oxygen over platinum monocrystals

Adsorption of O₂ over Pt(111), (110) and (100) at 80 K has been studied by thermodesorption mass-spectrometry. The results indicate the formation of chemisorbed molecular oxygen species and the influence of the surface structure of platinum on the low-temperature adsorption of oxygen.

Liquid chromatography electrospray mass spectrometry with variable fragmentor voltages gives simultaneous elemental and molecular detection of arsenic compounds

A single quadrupole high performance liquid chromatography electrospray mass spectrometry system with a variable fragmentor voltage facility was used in the positive ion mode for simultaneous recording of elemental and molecular mass spectral data for arsenic compounds. The method was applicable to the seven organoarsenic compounds tested: four arsenic-containing carbohydrates (arsenosugars), a quaternary arsonium compound (arsenobetaine), dimethylarsinic acid, and dimethylarsinoylacetic acid. It was not suitable for the two inorganic arsenic species arsenite and arsenate. In the case of arsenosugars, qualifying ion data for a characteristic common fragment (m/z 237) was also simultaneously obtained. The method was used to identify and quantify the major arsenosugars in crude extracts of two brown algae.
