Fouling Mitigation in a Heat Exchanger: High Cycles of Concentration for a Cooling-Tower Application
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of a physical water treatment (PWT) technology on fouling mitigation in a simulated cooling tower operating at high cycles of concentration. Hard water was produced by evaporating pure water in a circulating open cooling tower, where dissolved calcium carbonate ions became concentrated with time. Heat transfer tests were conducted in a rectangular channel by varying the cycle of concentration (COC) from 5 to 10, and fouling resistances were measured over 270 hrs for each case with and without the PWT treatment. Another test was conducted with no blowdown case with and without the PWT treatment. The fouling resistance at 5 cycles with the PWT treatment was about 70% less than that in the case without the PWT treatment at the end of 270-hr tests. Even at 10 cycles, the PWT treatment reduced the fouling resistance by 60% from the value for the no treatment case. Thus, one can conclude that the PWT technology can help circulating cooling-tower water at relatively high COC for significant freshwater conservation, while keeping fouling resistances below industry standards. 相似文献

We investigated pretilt angle generation and liquid crystal (LC) alignment by ultraviolet exposure during the imidization of polyimide (PI). The generated pretilt angle of a nematic (N) LC using an in situ photo-alignment method is smaller than that using a conventional photo-alignment method on a surface of PI having side chains. Amorphous SiO2 films were deposited by means of an electrospray technique. The relation between the water contact angle (WCA) of the deposited SiO2 films and the surface morphology is investigated. The feeding rate of the electrospray process greatly affects the morphology of the synthesized SiO2 films. There is also a significant change in the WCA on the surface of the films: the rougher the surface, the greater the WCA. An analysis is performed to study transient free convective boundary layer flow of a couple stress fluid over a vertical cylinder, in the absence of body couples. The solution of the time-dependent non-linear and coupled governing equations is carried out with the aid of an unconditionally stable Crank–Nicolson type of numerical scheme. Numerical results for the steady-state velocity, temperature as well as the time histories of the skin-friction coefcient and Nusselt number are presented graphically and discussed. This study analyzes the stability of an initially sharp interface between two miscible fluids in a porous medium. Linear stability equations are first derived using the similarity variable of the basic state, and then transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using a spectral expansion with and without quasi-steady-state approximation (QSSA). These transformed equations are solved using the eigenanalysis and initial value problem approach. The initial growth rate analysis shows that initially the system is unconditionally stable. The stability characteristics obtained under the present QSSA are quantitatively same as those obtained without the QSSA. To support these theoretical results, numerical simulations are conducted using the Fourier-spectral method. The site-selective C–H nitration reaction of 7-azaindoles with t-butyl nitrite under palladium catalysis is described. This protocol provides an efficient method for the construction of ortho-nitrated N-aryl-7-azaindoles with excellent site-selectivity and functional group compatibility.
