The objective of the work carried out was to recommend protocols for the collection, filtration (0.45 microm) and preservation of surface water samples for the subsequent determination of total 'dissolved' Hg. Cold vapour (CV) ICP-MS was employed to determine Hg; samples were acidified to a strength of 4 mol l(-1) HCl and 1% NaBH4 was used as the reducing agent in-line. Four types of 125 ml bottles were studied (Teflon, fluorinated ethene propene copolymer, FEP; high density polyethylene, HDPE; polyethylene terephthalate copolyester, PET; polypropylene, PP), together with three cleaning methods (EPA Methods 1631, 1638 and a rinse with reverse osmosis deionised water, 'MilliQ'). The transmission properties of the four materials were also studied to evaluate the potential for contamination from atmospheric Hg0. Results of this bottle study (n = 195), all below the detection limit of 0.5 ng l(-1), indicate that the bottles of choice, from an economic and time-saving perspective, are HDPE and PP, the latter being preferable if the sample is to be stored in a contaminated atmosphere. The bottles would be used on a once-only basis, negating the need for labourious and costly cleaning on repeat use. A simple rinse with MilliQ water would suffice prior to use. Twelve 0.45 microm filter systems (mostly Millipore and Gelman) were studied for (a) their potential Hg contamination properties and (b) their retention of Hg, possibly in colloidal form, during filtration. Ottawa River water, spiked at 50 ng l(-1) Hg, was used as a control sample. Again blank values were all negative, indicating contamination was not a concern but different recoveries of Hg were obtained across the different systems. The optimum systems to use, in that they provided maximum recovery (ca 80%) of Hg, are the Millipore Sterivex capsule and the Millipore Millex disc, both based on the hydrophilic Durapore membrane. The lowest recoveries (23-36%) were found with the Gelman AquaPrep systems and the Millipore HN nylon filter. Four control samples, Ottawa, Rideau and Gatineau Rivers, and a MilliQ blank, were used to study three preservation approaches, in the media: 0.5% BrCl, 2% HCl and 0.04% K2Cr2O7 in 1% HNO3. Mercury was stable for 28 days in a medium of 0.5% BrCl in all four samples but the other two media showed a loss of up to ca 20% Hg over this time frame, the loss being sample and time dependent. This may be a species transformation which is not detected by CV-ICP-MS from an HCl medium but this requires further investigation. Mercury was stable over the 28 days in the spiked blank MilliQ sample for all three preservation media.  相似文献

Nanotechnology has impacted every aspect of human life and the environment. The raising concern against influenza outbreaks is an ongoing issue. With the current drugs and natural remedies, some amount of resolution has been reached. Yet, nothing conclusive has been achieved. With every resource tapped, it is now time to combine strategies. This review highlights the low enthusiasm in this area, where not much has been probed into employing nanomaterials into influenza research. The achievements made through the intervention of nanotechnology into anti influenza research, has been surveyed in this review. Except for a few, not much progress was evidenced. Although significant progress has been achieved with nano inputs, yet nothing much has been done in this direction. This review emphasizes the need to combine strategies and find new remedies against influenza virus using nano platforms. New directions and future perspectives for accessing the nano inputs for combating the influenza issues have been discussed.  相似文献

To examine spectral and threshold effects for speech and noise at high levels, recognition of nonsense syllables was assessed for low-pass-filtered speech and speech-shaped maskers and high-pass-filtered speech and speech-shaped maskers at three speech levels, with signal-to-noise ratio held constant. Subjects were younger adults with normal hearing and older adults with normal hearing but significantly higher average quiet thresholds. A broadband masker was always present to minimize audibility differences between subject groups and across presentation levels. For subjects with lower thresholds, the declines in recognition of low-frequency syllables in low-frequency maskers were attributed to nonlinear growth of masking which reduced "effective" signal-to-noise ratio at high levels, whereas the decline for subjects with higher thresholds was not fully explained by nonlinear masking growth. For all subjects, masking growth did not entirely account for declines in recognition of high-frequency syllables in high-frequency maskers at high levels. Relative to younger subjects with normal hearing and lower quiet thresholds, older subjects with normal hearing and higher quiet thresholds had poorer consonant recognition in noise, especially for high-frequency speech in high-frequency maskers. Age-related effects on thresholds and task proficiency may be determining factors in the recognition of speech in noise at high levels.  相似文献

We demonstrate a superconductor array of subwavelength holes with active thermal control over the resonant transmission induced by surface plasmon polaritons. The array was lithographically fabricated on a high-temperature yttrium barium copper oxide superconductor and characterized by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. We observe a clear transition from a virtual excitation of the surface plasmon mode to a real surface plasmon mode. The highly controllable superconducting plasmonic crystals may find promising applications in the design of low-loss, large- dynamic-range amplitude modulation and surface-plasmon-based terahertz devices.  相似文献

Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen that must be controlled to ensure food safety. For the years 2003 and 2004, L. monocytogenes caused 20 deaths per 100 listeriosis cases and was responsible for most food recalls for pathogen contamination. The objective of this work was to develop a quantitative method to assess disinfectant activity against L. monocytogenes. Standard procedures for testing disinfectants against 3 bacteria are described in the AOAC Official Methods of Analysis as use-dilution methods. No standard methods are provided for L. monocytogenes. In this study, preliminary efficacy of a quaternary ammonium compound with hydroperoxide ion was determined for 25 bacterial strains. The zones of inhibition ranged from 7.0 to 12.5 mm, and the minimum inhibitory concentration ranged from 5 to 250 ppm. For final efficacy, stainless steel carriers were contaminated with L. monocytogenes and tested separately for 5, 10, and 15 min in disinfectant or phenol. After exposure, the carriers were placed into 2 series of D/E neutralization broth. For 3 replications with duplicate samples, the phenol coefficient was 3.3. This research presents a technique-sensitive method that provides quantitative data for comparison and analysis of disinfectant activity against L. monocytogenes.  相似文献

Redox active enzymes can be adsorbed onto electrode surfaces to catalyze the interconversion of oxidized and reduced substrates in solution, driven by the supply or removal of electrons by the electrode. The catalytic current is directly proportional to the rate of enzyme turnover, and its dependence on the electrode potential can be exploited to define both the kinetics and thermodynamics of the enzyme's catalytic cycle. However, observed electrocatalytic voltammograms are often complex because the identity of the rate limiting step changes with the electrode potential and under different experimental conditions. Consequently, extracting mechanistic information requires that accurate models be constructed to deconvolute and analyze the observed behavior. Here, a basic model for catalysis by an adsorbed enzyme is described. It incorporates substrate mass transport, enzyme kinetics, and interfacial electron transport, and it accurately reproduces experimentally recorded voltammograms from the oxidation of NADH by subcomplex Ilambda (the hydrophilic subcomplex of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase), under a range of conditions. Mass transport is imposed by a rotating disk electrode and described by the Levich equation. Interfacial electron transport is controlled by the electrode potential and characterized by a dispersion of rate constants, according to the model of Léger and co-workers. Here, the Michaelis-Menten equation is used for the enzyme kinetics, but our methodology can also be readily applied to derive and apply analogous equations relating to alternative enzyme mechanisms. Therefore, our results are highly relevant to the interpretation of electrocatalytic voltammograms for adsorbed enzymes in general.  相似文献

Platinum-ruthenium nanoparticles stabilized within a conductive polymer matrix are prepared using microwave heating. Polypyrrole di(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate, or PPyDEHS, has been chosen for its known electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and solubility in polar organic solvents. A scalable and quick two-step process is proposed to fabricate alloyed nanoparticles dispersed in PPyDEHS. First a mixture of PPyDEHS and metallic precursors is heated in a microwave under reflux conditions. Then the nanoparticles are extracted by centrifugation. Physical characterization by TEM shows that crystalline and monodisperse alloyed nanoparticles with an average size of 2.8 nm are obtained. Diffraction data show that crystallite size is around 2.0 nm. Methanol electro-oxidation data allow us to propose these novel materials as potential candidates for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) application. The observed decrease in sulfur content in the polymer upon incorporation of PtRu nanoparticles may have adversely affected the measured catalytic activity by decreasing the conductivity of PPyDEHS. Higher concentration of polymer leads to lower catalyst activity. Design and synthesis of novel conductive polymers is needed at this point to enhance the catalytic properties of these hybrid materials.  相似文献

A new synthesis of a series of 3‐amino‐1H‐quinazoline‐2,4‐diones is described. The 1H‐quinazoline‐2,4‐dione 10 was made starting with fluorobenzoic acid in three high yielding steps. The key step of this synthesis involved the generation of the dianion of urea 7 and the subsequent intramolecular nucleophilic displacement of the 2‐fluoro to form the quinazolinedione ring. The 3‐amino moiety was incorporated using (2,4‐dinitro‐phenyl)‐hydroxylamine as the aminating reagent.  相似文献
