Slopes of forward-masked psychometric functions (FM PFs) were compared with distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) input/output (I/O) parameters at 1 and 6 kHz to test the hypothesis that these measures provide similar estimates of cochlear compression. Implicit in this hypothesis is the assumption that both DPOAE I/O and FM PF slopes are functionally related to basilar-membrane (BM) response growth. FM PF-slope decreased with signal level, but this effect was reduced or reversed with increasing hearing loss; there was a trend of decreasing psychometric function (PF) slope with increasing frequency, consistent with greater compression at higher frequencies. DPOAE I/O functions at 6 kHz exhibited an increase in the breakpoint of a two-segment slope as a function of hearing loss with a concomitant decrease in the level of the distortion product (L(d)). Results of the comparison between FM PF and DPOAE I/O parameters revealed only a weak correlation, suggesting that one or both of these measures may provide unreliable information about BM compression.  相似文献

There is an abundance of literature on complex networks describing a variety of relationships among units in social, biological, and technological systems. Such networks, consisting of interconnected nodes, are often self-organized, naturally emerging without any overarching designs on topological structure yet enabling efficient interactions among nodes. Here we show that the number of nodes and the density of connections in such self-organized networks exhibit a power law relationship. We examined the size and connection density of 47 self-organizing networks of various biological, social, and technological origins, and found that the size-density relationship follows a fractal relationship spanning over 6 orders of magnitude. This finding indicates that there is an optimal connection density in self-organized networks following fractal scaling regardless of their sizes.  相似文献

In the past there was a prevailing feeling in industry that power ultrasound would be too expensive to use for water treatment on an industrial scale. This was based on calculations involving the direct scale up of power consumption in small-scale (generally batch) laboratory experiments. In recent times this attitude has changed somewhat as a result of the installation of a number of ultrasonic devices in operational water or sewage treatment plants. In our laboratories we have investigated the decontamination of water under the influence of ultrasound alone and in conjunction with other treatments. The results, particularly when applied to flowing systems, indicate a real future for sonochemistry in water treatment.  相似文献

The detection of superparamagnetic nanoparticles using NMR logging has the potential to provide enhanced contrast in oil reservoir rock formations. The stability of the nanoparticles is critical because the NMR relaxivity (R(2) ≡ 1/T(2)) is dependent on the particle size. Here we use a molecular theory to predict and validate experimentally the stability of citric acid-coated/PEGylated iron oxide nanoparticles under different pH conditions (pH 5, 7, 9, 11). The predicted value for the critical surface coverage required to produce a steric barrier of 5k(B)T for PEGylated nanoparticles (MW 2000) was 0.078 nm(-2), which is less than the experimental value of 0.143 nm(-2), implying that the nanoparticles should be stable at all pH values. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements showed that the effective diameter did not increase at pH 7 or 9 after 30 days but increased at pH 11. The shifts in NMR relaxivity (from R(2) data) at 2 MHz agreed well with the changes in hydrodynamic diameter obtained from DLS data, indicating that the aggregation behavior of the nanoparticles can be easily and quantitatively detected by NMR. The unexpected aggregation at pH 11 is due to the desorption of the surface coating (citric acid or PEG) from the nanoparticle surface not accounted for in the theory. This study shows that the stability of the nanoparticles can be predicted by the theory and detected by NMR quantitatively, which suggests the nanoparticles to be a possible oil-field nanosensor.  相似文献

The association between an achiral copper(II)‐containing host 1 and chiral carboxylates has been expanded beyond previous studies to new chiral carboxylate guests, both α‐amino acids and β‐homoamino acids. The observed exciton‐coupled circular dichroism (ECCD) signals for the enantiomers of each carboxylate were equal and opposite, and these signals differed in size and shape between the individual amino acids. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was applied as a statistical analysis technique to differentiate the amino acids, both enantioselectively and chemoselectively, giving the absolute configuration and identity of the amino acid. The identity of each of the α‐amino acids and β‐homoamino acids were determined independently by LDA, and then the two were considered together. Each of these analyses showed good differentiation of the amino acid guests with the use of only one host molecule.  相似文献

A nuclease-resistant RNA enzyme, constructed entirely from L-ribonucleotides, was shown to undergo ligand-dependent, self-sustained replication with exponential growth. The catalytic motif is based on a previously described RNA ligase that can undergo either self- or cross-replication but had been limited in its application to ligand sensing due to its susceptibility to degradation by ribonucleases. The self-replicating RNA enzyme and its RNA substrates were prepared synthetically from either D- or L-nucleoside phosphoramidites. The D and L reaction systems undergo isothermal, ligand-dependent exponential amplification in the same manner, but only the l system is impervious to ribonucleases and can operate, for example, in the presence of human serum. This system has potential for the quantitative detection of various ligands that are present within biological or environmental samples. In addition, this work provides the first demonstration of the self-sustained exponential amplification of nonbiological molecules.  相似文献

Microorganisms were used to reduce 4-bromoacetophenone to (S)-4-bromophenylethanol and (R)-4-bromophenylethanol. After a fractional factorial design to identify the important variables for this reaction, Geotrichum candidum provided a 98.9% conversion with >99% ee of the (R)-isomer, while Rhodotorula rubra led to a 97.6% conversion with a 98.8% ee of the S-isomer.  相似文献

The initiation step in the cationic polymerization of cyclic ethers is influenced by basicity and ring strain. We carried out ab-initio MODPOT/VRDDO/MERGE calculations on a variety of substituted oxetanes and generated electrostatic molecular potential contour (EMPC) maps in three-dimensions around the molecules. The size of the negative EMPC map region around the oxygen enabled us to predict the propensity to polymerize prior to the syntheses of the actual monomers themselves. We carried out ab-initio MODPOT/VRDDO/MERGE MRD-CI calculations for the propagation step of oxetane reacting with protonated oxetanes to cause ring opening of protonated oxetane. Similar MRD-CI calculations on variously substituted oxetanes will shed insight into relative copolymerization preferences.  相似文献
