Synthesis of 2-unsubstituted imidazolones from bisamides via a one-pot,domino dehydration/base promoted cyclisation process

A one-pot, domino process was developed as an alternative approach for the preparation of 2-unsubstituted imidazolones. The methodology utilizes readily accessible bisamides, which upon a dehydration/cyclisation sequence produced imidazolones in good yields. The transformation relies on the compatibility of the dehydrating agent and base, and the reaction conditions tolerate various functional groups.     

Implementation of a quality management system in meteorological practice in Serbia

An optional approach in the meteorological service Quality Management System (QMS) based on the case study of the Republic Hydrometeorological Service (MHS) of Serbia is presented and discussed in this paper. The idea is to use the ISO/IEC 17025 standard as a base for its QMS development. Main reasons for such a decision and the elements of the implemented solution are presented and discussed. Meteorological testing processes of the MHS of Serbia and relevant ISO/IEC 17025 scope of accreditation are presented. After establishing competencies in meteorological, environmental, and hydrological testing, the MHS of Serbia will develop an integrative ISO 9001 QMS. The Serbian case study could be taken into consideration as one of the options related to the future World Meteorological Organization Quality Management Framework.     

Application of Rouche’s theorem for MP filter design

The method for the minimum-phase (MP) finite impulse response (FIR) filter design, based on Rouche’s theorem from complex analysis is presented here. The filter is designed directly from a given specification. The method uses the cosine filters and the sharpening technique resulting in a multiplierless filter.     

Ultraviolet B light stimulates interleukin-20 expression by human epithelial keratinocytes

The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-20 (IL-20) may exert the majority of its activity in the skin. We examined the effect of various treatments including several forms of phototherapy on IL-20 expression using cultured normal human epithelial keratinocytes (NHEK). Broadband UVB light, recombinant (r) IL-1 and rIL-8 increased, while hydrocortisone reduced, NHEK supernatant IL-20 levels. Elevation of NHEK IL-20 mRNA and maximal supernatant IL-20 levels occurred with a UVB light dose (40 mJ cm(-2)) that reduced cell viability by approximately 50%. While this UVB light dose also elevated supernatant IL-1 alpha and IL-8 levels, antibody neutralization studies indicated that neither of these cytokines was directly responsible for this increase in IL-20 expression. However, the elevation in IL-20 levels was fully inhibited by the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor SB-203580, suggesting involvement of this stress signaling pathway in this UVB light response. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the photosensitizer lemuteporfin, UVA light, cisplatin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) or recombinant interferon-gamma (rIFN-gamma) either had little effect or decreased NHEK supernatant IL-20 levels. Reduced IL-20 levels paralleled the cytotoxic actions of PDT, UVA light or cisplatin and the antiproliferative effect of rIFN-gamma. Neither rIL-20 supplementation nor anti-IL-20 antibody treatments affected cell viability indicating that soluble IL-20 did not affect the short-term survival of UVB light-irradiated NHEK. Stimulation of IL-20 expression in keratinocytes by UVB light suggests that this cytokine might participate in skin responses to this ever-present environmental factor and potentially has a role in UV light-associated dermatoses.     

Multiband processing of multimode light: combining 3D photonic lanterns with waveguide Bragg gratings

The first demonstration of narrowband spectral filtering of multimode light on a 3D integrated photonic chip using photonic lanterns and waveguide Bragg gratings is reported. The photonic lanterns with multi‐notch waveguide Bragg gratings were fabricated using the femtosecond direct‐write technique in boro‐aluminosilicate glass (Corning, Eagle 2000). Transmission dips of up to 5 dB were measured in both photonic lanterns and reference single‐mode waveguides with 10.4‐mm‐long gratings. The result demonstrates efficient and symmetrical performance of each of the gratings in the photonic lantern. Such devices will be beneficial to space‐division multiplexed communication systems as well as for units for astronomical instrumentation for suppression of the atmospheric telluric emission from OH lines.     

On the convergence of finite difference schemes for the heat equation with concentrated capacity

Summary. We investigate the convergence of difference schemes for the one-dimensional heat equation when the coefficient at the time derivative (heat capacity) is represents the magnitude of the heat capacity concentrated at the point . An abstract operator method is developed for analyzing this equation. Estimates for the rate of convergence in special discrete energetic Sobolev's norms, compatible with the smoothness of the solution are obtained. Novel 1,2,4-triazine hydroxamic acid esters and alkylated 2, 3-dihydro-1,2,4-triazine N-oxides were prepared by rearrangement and selective alkylations of 3-alkoxy and 3-alkylamino-1,2,4-triazine N-oxides.     

Synthesis and crystal structure of 5-methyl-5,10-dihydrophenarsazine

The X-ray crystal structure of 5-methyl-5,10-dihydrophenarsazine, C₁₃H₁₂NAs, has been determined. The crystals are orthorhombic, space group P2₁2₁2₁, a = 8.511(4), b = 5.690(1), c = 23.535(9) Å, V = 1139.7(1.0)A³, and Z = 4. Least-squares refinement converged to R = 0.049 and Rw = 0.045. The central ring is in a boat conformation and the 5-methyl group is in the axial position with respect to the central ring. The folding angle between the planes of the two benzo rings is 154.1(4)°.     

Comprehensive Evaluation of Antioxidant Activity of Ribes berry Fruit Species: A Chemometric Approach

Currant fruit extracts were characterized by (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity, 2,2-azinobis-3 ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid cation decolorization activity, total reducing power, cupric ion reducing antioxidant power, and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays to evaluate their antioxidant activity. All five antioxidant assays revealed the highest antioxidant activity to be present for the black currants. The highest concentrations of phenolics were present in the black currants (1690?±?10?mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/100?g fresh weight), while the lowest value was obtained in the white currants (579?±?5?mg GAE/100?g fresh weight). The correlation between the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity assays was evaluated using regression analysis. Transition Metal Ion-binding Properties of a 14-Membered N2O2S2- Macrobicyclic Ligand

The selective liquid–liquid extraction of various transition metal cations from the aqueous phase to the organic phase was carried out using a 14-membered N₂O₂S₂-macrobicycle. Metal picrates such as Pb²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ni²⁺,Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺ were used in this extraction studies. It was found that the ligand showed moderate selectivity towards Pb²⁺ only among the other metals. The extraction constant (log K _ex) was determined to be 13.8 for Pb²⁺ complex.
