Couch and Torrence suggest that the vacuum Einstein equations admit a larger class of asymptotically flat solutions than those exhibiting the peeling property. Starting with the assumption that , (d/dr) and (/x A ) , wherex A (A = 2, 3) are angular coordinates, they show that , where 1 2 and 1<0; , where 2 1 and 1< 1; and 4 and 3 peel as they would under the stronger peeling conditions. The Winicour-Tamburino energy-momentun and angular momentum integrals for these solutions, in general, diverge. In fact, since Couch and Torrence determine only the radial dependence of the solution, it is not clear that the solutions are well defined. We find that the stronger assumption , (d/dr) , and (/x A ) does result in well-defined solutions for which both the energy-momentum and angular momentum intergrals are not only finite but result in the same expressions as are obtained for peeling space-times. This assumption appears to be the minimal assumption that is necessary for investigating outgoing radiation at null infinity.In part based on a dissertation by Stephanie Novak and submitted to Syracuse University in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Ph.D. degree.  相似文献

We consider the asymptotic dynamics of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations for the class of non-tilted Bianchi cosmologies with a barotropic perfect fluid and a pure homogeneous source-free magnetic field, with emphasis on models of Bianchi type VII0, which have not been previously studied. Using the orthonormal frame formalism and Hubble-normalized variables, we show that, as is the case for the previously studied class A magnetic Bianchi models, the magnetic Bianchi VII0 cosmologies also exhibit an oscillatory approach to the initial singularity. However, in contrast to the other magnetic Bianchi models, we rigorously establish that typical magnetic Bianchi VII0 cosmologies exhibit the phenomena of asymptotic self-similarity breaking and Weyl curvature dominance in the late-time regime.  相似文献

We consider using Hamiltonian feedback control to increase the speed at which a continuous measurement purifies (reduces) the state of a quantum system, and thus to increase the speed of the preparation of pure states. For a measurement of an observable with equispaced eigenvalues, we show that there exists a feedback algorithm which will speed up the rate of state reduction by at least a factor of 2(N + 1)/3.  相似文献

We study the structure of the shocks for the inviscid Burgers equation in dimension 1 when the initial velocity is given by Lévy noise, or equivalently when the initial potential is a two-sided Lévy process ψ 0. When ψ 0 is abrupt in the sense of Vigon or has bounded variation with lim?sup|h|↓0 h ?2 ψ 0(h)=∞, we prove that the set of points with zero velocity is regenerative, and that in the latter case this set is equal to the set of Lagrangian regular points, which is non-empty. When ψ 0 is abrupt we show that the shock structure is discrete. When ψ 0 is eroded we show that there are no rarefaction intervals.  相似文献

A novel mode-locking technique is presented in which the intensity-dependent spatial coupling dynamics of a waveguide array is used to achieve temporal mode-locking in a passive optical fiber laser. By use of the discrete, nearest-neighbor spatial coupling of the waveguide array, low-intensity light can be transferred to the neighboring waveguides and ejected (attenuated) from the laser cavity. In contrast, higher-intensity light is self-focused in the waveguide and remains largely unaffected. Numerical studies of this pulse shaping mechanism (intensity discrimination) show that using current waveguide arrays and standard optical fiber technology produces stable and robust mode-locked soliton-like pulses.  相似文献

Weak matching rules for a quasicrystalline tiling are local rules that ensure that fluctuations in perp-space are uniformly bounded. It is shown here that weak matching rules exist forN-fold symmetric tilings, whereN is any integer not divisible by four. The result suggests that, contrary to previous indications, quasicrystalline ground states are not confined to those symmetries for which the incommensurate ratios of wavevectors are quadratic irrationals. An explicit method of constructing weak matching rules forN-fold symmetric tilings in two dimensions is presented. It is shown that the generalization of the construction yields weak matching rules in the case of icosahedral symmetry as well.  相似文献

A certain two-dimensional lattice model with nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions is known to have a limit-periodic ground state. We show that during a slow quench from the high temperature, disordered phase, the ground state emerges through an infinite sequence of phase transitions. We define appropriate order parameters and show that the transitions are related by renormalizations of the temperature scale. As the temperature is decreased, sublattices with increasingly large lattice constants become ordered. A rapid quench results in a glasslike state due to kinetic barriers created by simultaneous freezing on sublattices with different lattice constants.  相似文献

Five 500 W fiber amplifiers were coherently combined using a diffractive optical element combiner, generating a 1.93 kW beam whose M(2)=1.1 beam quality exceeded that of the inputs. Combining efficiency near 90% at low powers degraded to 79% at full power owing to thermal expansion of the fiber tip array.  相似文献
