Although hexafluoroacetone is not polymerized by ionizing radiation, it is shown that γ-irradiation of hexafluoroacetone dissolved in polyethylene films produces a graft with a G value of 500 and, therefore, a kinetic chain length of 200. The effects of dose rate (0.021–3.55 Mrad/hr), temperature (21–53°C), and pressure (1.5–6.2 atm) on the graft rates have been measured. Also the effect of temperature (21–53°C) on the postirradiation grafting reaction and on the physical properties of the grafted films have been investigated. Together with solubility, diffusivity, infrared, and EPR data, the results lead to the following mechanism: The first step represents production of secondary alkyl radicals in the polyethylene by irradiation of the polymer–monomer system. The second step involves the linkage of the monomer to the radical site to form the alkoxy radical. Since it cannot add to another monomer unit, this radical abstracts a hydrogen atom from an adjacent polyethylene chain in the third step. Radical R· can then continue the kinetic chain. Radical combination and radical–impurity reactions terminate the chain. The graft may be unique in that it is the only one we have found in which a pendant group containing only one monomer unit is attached by a chain reaction. At dose rates up to 0.215 Mrad/hr, the grafting was linear with time and proportional to the 0.73 power of the dose rate at 21°C and to the 0.81 power at 53°C. The reaction is insensitive to increases in dose rate above 0.215 Mrad/hr where diffusivity measurements show the reaction to be diffusion-controlled. The rate of reaction increased 10% when the temperature was increased from 21 to 53°C. While there was significant postirradiation grafting reaction at 21°C, there was none at 53°C. The results do not fit the equations of reaction-controlled steady-state graft-polymerization kinetics. The deviations arise from an observed increase in monomer solubility in the film with increasing graft combined with low diffusivity of the monomer in polyethylene, and the presence of a radical-scavenging impurity which terminates the kinetic chain with the appearance of a relatively stable radical. EPR data suggests that the impurity is a trace of oxygen which may be produced radiolytically.  相似文献

The reaction of sodium hydride or potassium t-butoxide with methyl epoxycitronellate (1) in dimethylformamide affords a mixture of cis,cis-puleganolide (2) and cis,trans-puleganolide (3) in high yield. When the cyclization is conducted at 110°, the isomeric 2-isopropenyl-5-methylcyclopentanecarboxylic acids (8a–d) become the major products. It is demonstrated that γ-lactones undergo alkoxide-induced elimination to afford γ,δ-unsaturated acids.  相似文献

Adlayers were formed on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed by alkanethiols on gold. Base SAMs exposing amide functional groups at the SAM surface were formed with 12-mercaptododecanamide. Adlayers of diacetylene-containing monomers were then formed via amide hydrogen bonding in decalin and decalin/toluene mixtures. Grazing angle FTIR, contact angle measurements, and ellipsometry suggest that these adlayer films exhibit ordering and packing similar to that of SAMs on gold. Resonance Raman spectroscopy showed that these diacetylene adlayers could be readily polymerized by exposure to UV light.  相似文献

We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that it is possible to use an electric field to drive the formation of macroscopic chiral (conglomerate) domains from an initially homogeneous fluid racemate. Field-induced segregation is exhibited in a fluid smectic liquid-crystal phase of a racemic mesogen, wherein enantiomerically-enriched domains are readily identifiable by their chiral electro-optical response. The sharp field-generated boundaries that form between opposite-handed domains broaden by diffusion in the absence of field, but reform rapidly if the field is switched on again, providing unambiguous evidence for the field-driven physical separation of enantiomers. A mean-field model successfully describes the steady-state and the dynamic evolution of conglomerate formation.  相似文献

Self-exchange of isotopically labeled polycarboxylic acid within a polyelectrolyte multilayer proceeds to completion and is reversible. Similar exchange with poly(styrene sulfonate), which forms nonlabile polyelectrolyte complexes, is slow and irreversible but is facilitated by polyvalent ion pairing interventions of a third polyelectrolyte. This is an example of accelerated kinetics in "sticky" synthetic systems associated by nonspecific polyvalent interactions.  相似文献

The methodology for the simultaneous analysis of fluorescence decay curves is shown to create the possibility for some new types of fluorescence decay experiments. These new experiments include the use of the T-format in anisotropy experiments without the need to match the timing characteristics of photomultiplier tubes. Decay surfaces obtained at multiple timing calibrations can be analyzed simultaneously to resolve widely differing decay rates. Methodologies are described for the discrimination of associative from nonassociative behavior for multiexponential anisotropy decay. A systems theory approach to the analysis of excited state reactions is described.  相似文献

A novel methodology for 'reverse-docking' a cationic peptide-based organocatalyst to a rigid anionic transition state (TS) model for the conjugate addition of azide to alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl substrates is described. The resulting docking poses serve as simplified TS models for enantioselective catalysis. Molecular mechanics-based scoring and ranking of the docking poses, followed by clustering and structural analysis, reveal a clear energetic preference for docking to the S-enantiomeric azidation TS model, in agreement with experiment. Clear energetic trends emerged from docking the catalyst to both enantiomers of all six azidation TS models of this study. Structural analysis of the most favorable pose suggests a mechanism for enantioselective catalysis that is consistent with principles of molecular recognition, catalysis, and experimental data.  相似文献

Fourier transform infrared techniques were used to monitor mammalian cell growth plated on attenuated total reflection (ATR) crystals. Consistently, the growth kinetics plots generated from the obtained spectra demonstrated a sigmoidal curve representing a sequence of slow, rapid, then tapering cell growth which correlated well with non-spectral cell growth determinations. Significant advantages over traditional methods of measuring cell growth kinetics are demonstrated. The technique has promising potential to be used to study events in areas such as toxicology and cell biology.  相似文献

A joint theoretical and experimental investigation is undertaken to study the effects of OH-stretch/HOON torsion coupling and of quantum yield on the previously reported first overtone action spectrum of cis-cis HOONO (peroxynitrous acid). The minimum energy path along the HOON dihedral angle is computed at the coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples level with correlation consistent polarized quadruple zeta basis set, at the structure optimized using the triple zeta basis set (CCSD(T)/cc-pVQZ//CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ). The two-dimensional ab initio potential energy and dipole moment surfaces for cis-cis HOONO are calculated as functions of the HOON torsion and OH bond length about the minimum energy path at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ and QCISD/AUG-cc-pVTZ (QCISD-quadratic configuration interaction with single and double excitation and AUG-augmented with diffuse functions) level of theory/basis, respectively. The OH-stretch vibration depends strongly on the torsional angle, and the torsional potential possesses a broad shelf at approximately 90 degrees , the cis-perp conformation. The calculated electronic energies and dipoles are fit to simple functional forms and absorption spectra in the region of the OH fundamental and first overtone are calculated from these surfaces. While the experimental and calculated spectra of the OH fundamental band are in good agreement, significant differences in the intensity patterns are observed between the calculated absorption spectrum and the measured action spectrum in the 2nu(OH) region. These differences are attributed to the fact that several of the experimentally accessible states do not have sufficient energy to dissociate to OH+NO(2) and therefore are not detectable in an action spectrum. Scaling of the intensities of transitions to these states, assuming D(0)=82.0 kJ/mol, is shown to produce a spectrum that is in good agreement with the measured action spectrum. Based on this agreement, we assign two of the features in the spectrum to Deltan=0 transitions (where n is the HOON torsion quantum number) that are blue shifted relative to the origin band, while the large peak near 7000 cm(-1) is assigned to a series of Deltan=+1 transitions, with predominant contributions from torsionally excited states with substantial cis-perp character. The direct absorption spectrum of cis-cis HOONO (6300-6850 cm(-1)) is recorded by cavity ringdown spectroscopy in a discharge flow cell. A single band of HOONO is observed at 6370 cm(-1) and is assigned as the origin of the first OH overtone of cis-cis HOONO. These results imply that the origin band is suppressed by over an order of magnitude in the action spectrum, due to a reduced quantum yield. The striking differences between absorption and action spectra are correctly predicted by the calculations.  相似文献
