Preliminary Investigation of the Effect of Select Pollutants on Marine Phytoplankton Using Multidimensional Fluorescence Measurements

Abstract

The use of multidimensional fluorescence for detecting the effects of select pollutants on algal fluorescence and production is demonstrated. Multidimensional fluorescence is ideally suited to rapidly measure algal fluorescence generated by both chlorophyll a and accessory pigments, as well as any changes induced by pollutants. Laboratory cultured and natural algae samples from classes Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, and Cyanophyceae were exposed to substituted nitroaromatics and fluorescence spectra of the algae recorded. Notable spectroscopic changes and fluorescence quenching were observed. In addition, a novel method for rapidly preconcentrating dilute natural marine samples is described.

On the Number of Type Change Loci of a Generalized Complex Structure

In this note, we describe a procedure to construct generalized complex structures whose type change locus has arbitrarily many path components on products of the circle with a connected sum of closed 3-manifolds. As an application, we use the procedure to exhibit such geometric structures on a myriad of simply connected 4-manifolds among many others.     

Copper‐Catalyzed Annulation of 2‐Formylazoles with Aminoiodopyrazoles: Synthesis of New Heterocyclic Ring Systems

Various 2‐formylazoles underwent CuI/sparteine‐catalyzed annulation with 1‐substituted‐4‐iodo‐5‐aminopyrazoles to produce four new heterocyclic ring systems. The reaction was demonstrated for 2‐formylpyrroles, 2‐formylindoles, 2‐formylimidazole, and 3‐methyl‐5‐formylpyrazole. 3‐Substitution of the iodopyrazole was tolerated.     

Aza-Michael reaction: selective mono- versus bis-addition under environmentally-friendly conditions

Aza-Michael reactions between primary amines and methyl propenoate have been investigated under environmentally-friendly solventless heterogeneous catalysis in order to obtain the mono- or the bis-adduct. The reaction conditions can be altered so as to maximise the yields of the required product with high selectivity.
