Electronic structure of platinum at ultrahigh pressure

Abstract

Platinum is studied, theoretically, under very high compression. The calculated equation of state is found to agree well with the recent experimental data. At V/V₀ = 0.4, where V₀ is the experimental equilibrium volume, we find a transition from the face centered cubic structure (fcc), found at ambient pressure, to the body centered cubic structure (bcc). The calculated transition pressure is 26 Mbar. The stabilization of the bcc structure is explained by the eigen value sum.     

An optimized method for the determination of volatile and semi-volatile aldehydes and ketones in ambient particulate matter

A method has been developed to measure aldehydes and ketones associated with atmospheric particles. Carbonyl compounds from particulate material collected on Teflon-coated glass-fiber filters were simultaneously extracted and derivatized with an appropriate 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNPH) solution. The efficiency of this procedure utilizing various 2,4-DNPH concentrations and solvent compositions was studied for 13 carbonyl compounds of atmospheric importance. These include formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, dicarbonyls such as glyoxal and methylglyoxal, and biogenic carbonyls such as pinonaldehyde and nopinone. An extraction solution containing 3 × 10^?2 M 2,4-DNPH, in 60% acetonitrile/40% water, and pH 3 was most efficient in extracting and derivatizing these aldehydes and ketones (83-100% recovery). Improved sample enrichment and 2,4-DNPH purification methods were developed that afforded detection limits of 0.009-5.6 ng m^?3. The relative standard deviation for replicate analyses were 1.9-10.1%. Carbonyl compounds in ambient particulate samples were quantified during a recent field study. Median values for nine carbonyl species ranged from 0.01-33.9 ng m^?3 during the study.     

A Quantum Chemical Study of the Abnormal Reactivity of 2‐Methoxyfuran

The gas‐phase pyrolytic and oxidative chemistry of furans has received much attention recently because of their potential as platform chemicals and biofuels. Typically these compounds exhibit very strong ring carbon to H or CH₃ bonds. 2‐Methoxyfuran had been reported to be exceptionally unstable in comparison to related substituted heterocycles in pyrolytic experiments. The origins of its reactivity are shown to be due to the very weak O–CH₃, which at 189.5 ± 1.9 kJ mol^?1 is some 200 kJ mol^?1 weaker than C–H bonds in the molecule. We show that the reported reactivity is somewhat overestimated but that does not alter the fact that 2‐methoxyfuran is exceptionally unstable. It may prove to be a useful alternative to azomethane as a thermal source of methyl radicals.     

1,3-Diene-Containing Phase Transfer Catalysts and Their Removal From Solution by a Diels-Alder Reaction with an Immobilized Triazolinedione Dienophile

8E,10E-Dodecadienyl-tri-n-butylamonium and -tri-n-butylphosphonium methanesulfonates were prepared and shown to be effective phase transfer catalysts. After reaction the catalysts can be removed quantitatively from the organic phase by addition of a silica gelimmobilized triazolinedione dienophile followed by filtration.     

Syntheses,structure, and reactivity of acyclic enetriyne and enetetrayne derivatives

Sonogashira coupling of buta-1,3-diynylbenzene with ((2-iodophenyl)ethynyl)trimethylsilane and 1,2-diiodobenzene led to the novel enetriyne, 1-ethynyl-2-(phenylbuta-1,3-diynyl)benzene, and enetetrayne, 1,2-bis(phenylbuta-1,3-diynyl)benzene, respectively. Solid state structural and thermal analyses are also described. In solution, 1-ethynyl-2-(phenylbuta-1,3-diynyl)benzene was found to undergo thermal Bergman cyclization to afford 2-(phenylethynyl)naphthalene.     

One-pot diastereoselective synthesis of tetrahydroepimino-benzo[b]azocines through sequential [3+2]-cycloaddition and Staudinger-aza-Wittig reactions

The one-pot synthesis of tetrahydro-epiminobenzo[b]azocines through a sequential 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition and intramolecular Staudinger-aza-Wittig reaction sequence is reported. This methodology provides a new and efficient approach for medium-sized and bridged nitrogen heterocyclic molecules.
