The quest for solving QCD: Simulations at light quark masses

We present lattice QCD simulation results from the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC). In particular, we show the strange baryon spectrum, list a number of precisely determined low energy constants of chiral perturbation theory and provide a first account of simulations including the strange and charm degrees of freedom.     

Characteristics and performance of a "universal" membrane suitable for gas separation, pervaporation, and nanofiltration applications

The large diversity of membrane separation processes results in a different optimization of membrane materials and structures for each process. In this article, the extent to which a single membrane type can be used in gas separation, pervaporation, and nanofiltration has been investigated. Interpretation of transport and separation properties has led to the conclusion that the membrane SolSep 3360 is a multifunctional membrane fulfilling all requirements for the three separation processes. This can be achieved by keeping a good balance between the thickness of the top layer, sterical hindrance during transport, and the effect of hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity.

Orthogonal protection strategies have been used to prepare a series of luminescent and MRI active lanthanide complexes containing a tuftsin targeting vector that are internalised by macrophage cells.     

The route to the structure determination of amorphous solids: a case study of the ceramic Si(3)B(3)N(7)

Si(3)B(3)N(7) is the parent compound of a new class of amorphous ceramics containing silicon, boron, nitrogen, and carbon that display a unique spectrum of properties. It consists of a random network in which the constituent elements are linked by predominantly covalent bonds. Similarly to quartz glass, the composition of amorphous Si(3)B(3)N(7) is virtually stoichiometric. As all three of its constituent elements can serve as the objects of various structural probes, Si(3)B(3)N(7) was selected as the basis of a systematic structural investigation, in which methods for the structure determination of solids without translational symmetry could be validated and improved. However, as the complete amorphous structure cannot be deduced from experimental data, these results must be complemented by computer simulations. Thus, five classes of structure models were generated and compared to experimental results. Only the models generated by following the actual synthesis route as closely as possible agreed well with the experimental data.     

Isothermal compressibility and anisotropic structural response of As2O5 under pressure

The isothermal compressibility of As₂O₅ has been studied up to a pressure of 19.5 GPa. High resolution X-ray powder diffraction and a membrane driven diamond anvil cell were used to determine the bulk moduli and their pressure derivatives according to various Equations of States and to investigate a potential transformation to a high pressure polymorph. A mechanism which inhibits such a phase transformation up to the maximum applied pressure was revealed.     

Lowness for isomorphism,countable ideals,and computable traceability

We show that every countable ideal of degrees that are low for isomorphism is contained in a principal ideal of degrees that are low for isomorphism by adapting an exact pair construction. We further show that within the hyperimmune free degrees, lowness for isomorphism is entirely independent of computable traceability.
