Protection of cortical cells by equine estrogens against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity is mediated through a calcium independent mechanism

Background  

High concentrations of glutamate can accumulate in the brain and may be involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. This form of neurotoxicity involves changes in the regulation of cellular calcium (Ca²⁺) and generation of free radicals such as peroxynitrite (ONOO^-). Estrogen may protect against glutamate-induced cell death by reducing the excitotoxic Ca²⁺ influx associated with glutamate excitotoxicity. In this study, the inhibition of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) along with the effect of 17β-estradiol (17β-E₂) and a more potent antioxidant Δ⁸, 17β-estradiol (Δ⁸, 17β-E₂) on cell viability and intracellular Ca²⁺ ([Ca²⁺]_i), following treatment of rat cortical cells with glutamate, was investigated.     

The $-game

We propose a payoff function extending Minority Games (MG) that captures the competition between agents to make money. In contrast with previous MG, the best strategies are not always targeting the minority but are shifting opportunistically between the minority and the majority. The emergent properties of the price dynamics and of the wealth of agents are strikingly different from those found in MG. As the memory of agents is increased, we find a phase transition between a self-sustained speculative phase in which a “stubborn majority” of agents effectively collaborate to arbitrage a market-maker for their mutual benefit and a phase where the market-maker always arbitrages the agents. A subset of agents exhibit a sustained non-equilibrium risk-return profile. High-power intracavity frequency doubling of a Ti:sapphire femtosecond oscillator

We demonstrate intracavity frequency doubling of a standard femtosecond Ti:sapphire oscillator. The cavity is extended with a pair of focusing mirrors and a 0.5-mm-thick BBO crystal. We achieve a repetition rate of 50 MHz and simultaneously generate 22 mW of 55-fs pulses at 810 nm and 200 mW of 73-fs pulses at 405 nm, which corresponds to 4 nJ per pulse. We create a total of 330-mW, 405-nm light when pumping the Ti:sapphire crystal with 5.7 W from an Ar-ion laser, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 5.7%. No saturation is found, which implies that higher outputs can be achieved with higher pump rates. Preliminary results from the use of blue pulses as pump in an optical parametric amplifier seeded by pulses from a photonic crystal fiber are presented. The Micro-Canonical Point Vortex Ensemble: Beyond Equivalence

The fluid limit N is constructed for a sequence of ensembles of N classical point vortices in a finite domain ² whose ensemble densities (w.r.t. Liouville measure) are Gaussian approximations to (E-H). Letting the variance 0 after N has been taken, one recovers the special class of nonlinear stationary Euler flows that is expected from the micro-canonical ensemble. The construction improves over previous ones which either had to regularize the logarithmic singularities of the point vortex Hamiltonian or had to assume equivalence of ensembles. In particular, nonequivalence between micro-canonical and canonical ensemble prevails for certain geometries where conditionally stable configurations with negative 'global vortex pair-specific heat' can and do exist in the micro-canonical but not in the canonical ensemble.     

Expert consensus in solo voice performance evaluation

Experts were interviewed to identify criteria for evaluation of vocal performance. A scale was then constructed and inter- and intrajudge reliability assessed. Experts listened to 19 different performances, plus 6 presented a second time. Interjudge reliability for one judge was modest, but increased dramatically as the size of the judge panel increased. The most reliable items were overall score and intonation accuracy. Diction was less reliable than other items. Intrajudge reliability was higher for overall score than for any other item. A factor analysis on the test items yielded factors labelled intrinsic quality, execution, and diction. Another factor analysis, using the experts as variables, revealed two underlying evaluative dimensions. It was found that 13 experts were primarily influenced by execution, and that 8 were mainly affected by intrinsic quality. Interjudge and intrajudge reliabilities of these two groups differed.
