Speciation of seleno compounds in yeast aqueous extracts by three-dimensional liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric and electrospray mass spectrometric detection

A three-dimensional liquid chromatographic purification protocol based on sequential size-exclusion, anion-exchange and cation-exchange separation mechanisms was developed for the mapping of seleno compounds in aqueous yeast extracts. The method allowed the demonstration of the presence of more than 30 different seleno compounds. Semi-preparative size-exclusion and anion-exchange chromatography were optimized for maximum resolution using electrospray-compatible buffers in order to purify the compounds for mass spectrometric analysis. Molecular masses were attributed to many of the compounds on the basis of the selenium isotopic pattern in the electrospray mass spectra and of the collision-induced fragmentation patterns. Limitations preventing the ultimate identification of the selenium species detected are discussed.     

Photodynamics of the bacteriochlorophyll-carotenoid system. 2. Influence of central metal,solvent and beta-carotene on photobleaching of bacteriochlorophyll derivatives

Bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) derivatives (with central Mg replaced by metal "M") ([M]-BChl with M = 2H, Mg, Zn, Pd, Cu) have been investigated for their photodynamic capacity and stability toward photodegradation in organic solvents and aqueous micellar solution. A protocol has been developed for screening new sensitizers. BChl and [Zn]-BChl are efficient sensitizers, but they are also quickly degraded by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by autosensitization, as well as by hetero-sensitization with 17(4)-methyl-13(2)-demethoxycarbonyl-pheophorbide a (MPP). Photostable [Cu]-BChl is a poor sensitizer, whereas [Pd]-BChl and bacteriopheophytin a are not only very efficient sensitizers but are also very stable toward ROS. beta-Carotene is no efficient physical quencher of ROS in the system; rather, it acts as a photochemical quencher that competes with [M]-BChl and undergoes photooxygenation at high rates. Photolability seems to depend on the pigment oxidation potential and, in parallel, on the presence of central metals preferring coordination numbers higher than 4, whereas photodynamic capacity depends on long excited state life-times of the pigment or efficient intersystem crossing (or both).     

Parallel organization of contralateral and ipsilateral prefrontal cortical projections in the rhesus monkey

Background  

The neocortical commissures have a fundamental role in functional integration across the cerebral hemispheres. We investigated whether commissural projections in prefrontal cortices are organized according to the same or different rules as those within the same hemisphere, by quantitatively comparing density, topography, and laminar origin of contralateral and ipsilateral projections, labeled after unilateral injection of retrograde tracers in prefrontal areas.     

Fluorescence Enhancements on Silver Colloid Coated Surfaces

We observed a strong, more than 16-fold, enhancement of Texas Red-labeled BSA fluorescence emission when deposited on silver colloid coated surfaces (SCCS). The same labeled protein deposited on silver island films (SIFs) showed an approximate 8-fold fluorescence enhancement. The lifetimes of Texas Red-BSA fluorescence are significantly shorter on silvered surfaces than on uncoated quartz substrate indicating a strong change in radiative decay rate of the dyes. We also observed a 36-fold increased brightness of overlabeled fluorescein-HSA deposited on silver colloid coated surface. Stronger enhancement observed for overlabeled Fl-HSA protein indicates that presence of silver particles partially decreased self-quenching. Our results indicate that surfaces coated with silver colloids are valuable substrates for metal-enhanced fluorescence.     

Is planarity of pyridin-2-yl- and pyrazin-2-yl-formamide thiosemicarbazones related to their tuberculostatic activity? X-ray structures of two pyrazine-2-carboxamide-N′-carbonothioyl-hydrazones

Crystal structures of two title compounds and several their relatives known earlier reveal conservative and characteristic features, which may be related to their tuberculostatic activity. The molecules are predominantly planar due to conjugation through five successive bonds in the zwitterionic fragment S⁻–C(sp²)–N–NH⁺–C(sp²)–NH₂ and intramolecular hydrogen bonds, which prevent rotation of the adjacent pyrazine (or pyridine) ring. It has been suggested that in spatial sense such planar molecules resemble acridines intercalating with nucleic acids and that similar process may be responsible for tuberculostatic activity of the title pyrazine-2-carboxamide-N′-carbonothioyl-hydrazones.     

The integrable nonlinear degenerate diffusion equationu t=[f(u)u x −1 x and its relatives

The nonlinear diffusion equationu _t=[f(u)g(u _x )] arises in recent models of turbulent transport and of stress dissipation in rock blasting. A Lie point symmetry analysis produces many similarity reductions of exponential and power-law forms, and reveals that for all choices off the equation is always integrable wheng(u _x )=1/u _x . We identify the functionsf(u) which guarantee equivalence to the linear heat equation. For all other choices off, the linear canonical form leads to a self-adjoint differential equation by separation of variablesx andt. We construct a number of explicit solutions with simple boundary conditions, which illustrate behavior in the vicinity of the degenerate region withu _x =. If zero flux and constant concentration are maintained on free boundaries, then steep concentration gradients may evolve from smooth initial conditions. For other boundary conditions, unlike the examples of strong degeneracy, smoothing will occur at initial step discontinuities.
