On completely irreducible operators

Let T be a bounded linear operator on Hilbert space H, M an invariant subspace of T. If there exists another invariant subspace N of T such that H = M + N and M ∩ N = 0, then M is said to be a completely reduced subspace of T. If T has a nontrivial completely reduced subspace, then T is said to be completely reducible; otherwise T is said to be completely irreducible. In the present paper we briefly sum up works on completely irreducible operators that have been done by the Functional Analysis Seminar of Jilin University in the past ten years and more. The paper contains four sections. In section 1 the background of completely irreducible operators is given in detail. Section 2 shows which operator in some well-known classes of operators, for example, weighted shifts, Toeplitz operators, etc., is completely irreducible. In section 3 it is proved that every bounded linear operator on the Hilbert space can be approximated by the finite direct sum of completely irreducible operators. It is clear that a completely irreducible operator is a rather suitable analogue of Jordan blocks in L(H), the set of all bounded linear operators on Hilbert space H. In section 4 several questions concerning completely irreducible operators are discussed and it is shown that some properties of completely irreducible operators are different from properties of unicellular operators. __________ Translated from Acta Sci. A study on the electrical conductivity of multi-walled carbon nanotube aqueous solution

The electrical conductivity was investigated for multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) dissolved in chloroform and toluene, respectively. The electrical conductivity remarkably increased with increase in the content of MWNTs, which is in accordance with Archie's equation . Furthermore, a hypothesis of the electronic transport process was proposed to explain the difference between the solution and the solid compound. In addition, the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity shows that log σ vs. 1/T exist in a good linear relationship. The activation energy of the electrical conductivity decreased with increase in concentration and an inflexion was observed at 60 °C in MWNT/toluene solution.     

The Iyengar Type Inequalities with Exact Estimations and the Chebyshev Central Algorithms of Integrals

In this paper, both low order and high order extensions of the Iyengar type inequality are obtained. Such extensions are the best possible in the same sense as that of the Iyengar inequality. hzrthermore, the Chebyshev central algorithms of integrals for some function classes and some related problems are also considered and investigated.

Synthesis,structure, spectroscopic and magnetic properties of a novel two-dimensional copper(II) complex Na2[Cu(pba)] · 6H2O [pba = 1,3-propylenebis(oxamato)]

The copper(II) complex Na₂[Cu(pba)] · 6H₂O has been synthesized and its structure determined. It consists of a novel two-dimensional network of [Cu(pba)]^2– anions connected to each other through the sodium ion as a bridge. Spectroscopic and magnetic properties have been measured and a spin distribution calculation has been carried out with the GAUSSIAN-94. Theoretical calculations indicate the rather larger spin density on nitrogen atoms should be responsible for the satellite lines appearing beside the main hyperfine coupling signs of copper(II). The antiferromagnetic interaction may be due to the intermolecular interaction and/or different copper(II) ions through the Na⁺ bridge in the same layer.

Synthesis and characterization of new bis(1-aryliminomethylenylnaphthalen-2-oxy)nickel complexes and their catalytic behavior for vinyl polymerization of norbornene

The synthesized 1-aryliminomethylenylnaphthalen-2-ol derivatives reacted with nickel chloride to form bis(1-aryliminomethylenylnaphthalen-2-oxy)nickel complexes. All resultant compounds were structurally characterized by elemental analyses, IR and H NMR, and the structures of the formed complexes were elucidated by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The complexes show high catalytic activities for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene in the presence of methylaluminoxane. The catalytic activity variations have been followed by gas chromatography through monitoring the conversion of norbornene.     

Jensen's inequality for g-expectation: part 1

Briand et al. (Electron. Comm. Probab. 5 (2000) 101–117) gave a counterexample and proposition to show that given g,g-expectations usually do not satisfy Jensen's inequality for most of convex functions. This yields a natural question, under which conditions on g, do g-expectations satisfy Jensen's inequality for convex functions? In this paper, we shall deal with this question in the case that g is convex and give a necessary and sufficient condition on g under which Jensen's inequality holds for convex functions.
