Depth-resolved fluorescence measurement in a layered turbid medium by polarized fluorescence spectroscopy

We show that, when a turbid medium with a layered fluorophore distribution is excited by linearly polarized light, measurement of angle-resolved polarized fluorescence can provide depth-resolved fluorescence measurements.     

Observation of psi(3770) --> pi pi J/psi and measurement of Gamma ee[psi(2S)

We observe signals for the decays psi(3770) --> XJ/psi from data acquired with the CLEO detector operating at the CESR e+ e- collider with square root of s = 3773 MeV. We measure the following branching fractions Beta(psi(3770) --> XJ/psi and significances: (189 +/- 20 +/- 20) x 10(-5) (11.6sigma) for X = pi+ pi-, (80 +/- 25 +/- 16) x 10(-5) (3.4sigma) for X = pi0 pi0, and (87 +/- 33 +/- 22) x 10(-5) (3.5sigma) for X = eta, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The radiative return process e+ e- --> gamma psi(2S) populates the same event sample and is used to measure Gamma ee[psi(2S)] = (2.54 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.11) keV.     

Experimental limits on weak annihilation contributions to decays

We present the first experimental limits on high-q2 contributions to charmless semileptonic decays of the form expected from the weak annihilation (WA) decay mechanism. Such contributions could bias determinations of /Vub/ from inclusive measurements of B-->Xulupsilon. Using a wide range of models based on available theoretical input we set a limit of GammaWA/Gammab-->u<7.4% (90% confidence level) on the WA fraction, and assess the impact on previous inclusive determinations of /Vub/.     

Effect of pressure on optical and electrical properties of tungsten diselenide single crystals

Optical absorption spectra of tungsten diselenide (WSe₂) single crystals subjected to different values of pressure (0, 2, 4 and 6 GPa) were obtained in the spectral range 700–1450 nm with the help of a UV–VIS–NIR spectrophotometer. The spectra were thoroughly analyzed in the absorption edge region for obtaining direct as well as indirect band gaps in this material. The high temperature resistivity and thermoelectric power on WSe₂ single crystals at various pressures were also studied. The results and their implications are discussed in the article.     

5 MeV Proton irradiation effects on 200 GHz silicon–germanium heterojunction bipolar transistors

The total dose effects of 5?MeV proton and Co-60 gamma irradiation in the dose range from 1 to 100?Mrad on advanced 200?GHz Silicon–Germanium heterojunction bipolar transistors (SiGe HBTs) are investigated. The SRIM simulation study was conducted to understand the energy loss of 5?MeV proton ions in SiGe HBT structure. Pre- and post-radiation DC figure of merits such as forward- and inverse-mode Gummel characteristics, excess base current, DC current gain and output characteristics were used to quantify the radiation tolerance of the devices. The results show that the proton creates a significant amount of damages in the surface and bulk of the transistor when compared with gamma irradiation. The SiGe HBTs shows robust ionizing radiation tolerance even up to a total dose of 100?Mrad for both radiations.     

Optimization of facet coating for highly strained InGaAs quantum well lasers operating at 1200 nm

The optical output power of a laser diode can be enhanced by anti-reflection (AR) and high-reflection (HR) facet coatings, respectively, at the front and back facet. AR and HR coatings also serve the purpose of protection and passivation of laser diode facets. In this work, we have designed and optimized a single layer λ/4 thick Al₂O₃ film for the AR coating and a stack of λ/4 thick Al₂O₃/λ/4 thick Si bi-layers for the HR coating for highly strained InGaAs quantum-well edge emitting broad area (BA) laser diodes. Effect of the front and back facet reflectivities on output power of the laser diodes has been studied. The light output versus injected current (L–I characteristics) measurements were carried out on selected devices before and after the facet coatings. We have also carried out the numerical simulation and analysis of L–I characteristics for this particular diode structure. The experimental results have been compared and verified with the numerical simulation.     

Synthesis and Characterization of Some Novel Dialkyldithiophosphate Derivatives of Macrocyclic Complexes of Pb(II) Having N2 S2 Potential Donors in 14- to 20-Membered Rings

Dialkyldithiophosphate derivatives of macrocyclic complexes of Pb(II), having N₂S₂ potential donors, of the general formula, [Pb(L)S₂P(OR)₂] (where L = macrocyclic ligands L¹, L², L³, L⁴ & L⁵ and R = CH₃-, C₃H₇ ⁿ- & C₃H₇ ⁱ-) have been Synthesized from the reactions of [Pb(L)X₂] (where X = Cl, NO₃, or CH₃COO) with sodium dialkyl dithiophosphates in 1:2 molar ratios in THF. Fifteen new derivatives have been synthesized by the combination of five macrocyclic complexes of 14–20 member rings with three different types of dialkyldithiophosphate. These compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, molecular weight determination, IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C, and ³¹P NMR. Molecular weight determinations of these complexes indicate their monomeric nature. An octahedral structure is proposed.     

Synthesis and Antibacterial Studies of Some Novel 2-(Coumarin-3-yl)-5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazoles Containing 2,4,6-Trisubstituted s-Triazine Derivatives

A new series of 2-(coumarin-3-yl)-5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazoles based on various aryl thiourea/ureas incorporating a 1,3,5-s-triazine moiety is reported. The components of this series have been obtained by the reaction of cyanuric chloride (1) with 2-(coumarin-3-yl)-5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazole (2). The prepared 2-{(coumarin-3-yl-1,3,4-oxadiazolyl)-5-thio}-4,6-dichloro-s-triazine (3) was subsequently treated with morpholine (4) to form 2-{(coumarin-3-yl-1,3,4-oxadiazolyl)-5-thio}-4-(morpholino)-6-chloro-s-triazine (5). This was further treated with various substituted aryl urea/thioureas (6a–k/7a–k) to afford the title compounds 8a–k and 9a–k, which were and tested for their antibacterial activity (MIC) against different microorganisms. The structures of the novel synthesized compound have been established on the basis of ¹H NMR and FT-IR data together with elemental analysis.

Magnetic,Spectral, Thermal,and Electrical Properties of Coordination Polymers Derived from Terpolymers

Coordination polymers of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), zinc(II), chromium(IU), iron(IU), oxovanadium(N), and dioxouranium-(VI) with p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB)-thiourea (T)-trioxane (T) (PHBTT) polymer were prepared. The analytical data agree with 1:1 metal-ligand stoichiometry. Magnetic susceptibility, visible and IR spectra, and thermal and electrical conductivities of the chelates have been studied and probable structures assigned to the chelates.
