Design of the cold atom PHARAO space clock and initial test results

In this paper we describe the cold atom clock PHARAO, designed for microgravity operation. All elements of the PHARAO engineering model have been manufactured and delivered to CNES, the French space agency. We present the clock design, its main characteristics, and initial science operation. PHARAO is one of the main components of the Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space payload that is scheduled to fly on board the International Space Station in 2010. Chromatographic investigations of furocoumarins fromHeracleum genus fruits

Summary Furocoumarins from extracts ofHeracleum genus fruits were separated using normal and reversed phase TLC and HPLC and isolated in the milligram scale using overloaded systems of column chromatography. Binary or ternary solvents containing a polar modifier (methanol, diisopropyl ether or acetonitrile) were used as the mobile phases. Preliminary report on this work was presented at the 47th International Congress of Pharmaceutical Sciences of F.I.P. in Amsterdam. The Netherlands, 30 August–5 September 1987.     

A supramolecular hydrogen‐bonded complex between 1,3,5‐tris(diisobutylhydroxysilyl)benzene and trans‐bis(4‐pyridyl)ethylene

The trisilanol 1,3,5‐(HOi‐Bu₂Si)₃C₆H₃ ( 7 ), prepared in three steps from 1,3,5‐tribromobenzene via the intermediates 1,3,5‐(Hi‐Bu₂Si)₃C₆H₃ ( 8 ) and 1,3,5‐(Cli‐Bu₂Si)₃C₆H₃ ( 9 ) forms an equimolar complex with trans‐bis(4‐pyridyl)ethylene (bpe), 7 ·bpe, whose structure was investigated by X‐ray crystallography. The hydrogen‐bonded network features a number of SiO? H(H)Si and SiO? H hydrogen bridges. Evidence was found for cooperative strengthening within the sequential hydrogen bonds. Characterization and recognition of generalized clique-Helly graphs

Let p?1 and q?0 be integers. A family of sets F is (p,q)-intersecting when every subfamily F^′⊆F formed by p or less members has total intersection of cardinality at least q. A family of sets F is (p,q)-Helly when every (p,q)-intersecting subfamily F^′⊆F has total intersection of cardinality at least q. A graph G is a (p,q)-clique-Helly graph when its family of (maximal) cliques is (p,q)-Helly. According to this terminology, the usual Helly property and the clique-Helly graphs correspond to the case p=2,q=1. In this work we present a characterization for (p,q)-clique-Helly graphs. For fixed p,q, this characterization leads to a polynomial-time recognition algorithm. When p or q is not fixed, it is shown that the recognition of (p,q)-clique-Helly graphs is NP-hard.     

On regularity of a weak solution to the Navier–Stokes equation with generalized impermeability boundary conditions

We consider the 3D Navier–Stokes equation with generalized impermeability boundary conditions. As auxiliary results, we prove the local in time existence of a strong solution (‘strong’ in a limited sense) and a theorem on structure. Then, taking advantage of the boundary conditions, we formulate sufficient conditions for regularity up to the boundary of a weak solution by means of requirements on one of the eigenvalues of the rate of deformation tensor. Finally, we apply these general results to the case of an axially symmetric flow with zero angular velocity.     

A method for estimating the local lattice distortions near a magnetic ion from ligand hyperfine parameters: Yb3+trigonal centers in SrF2 and BaF2

An empirical relationship describing the radial dependence of the nondipole part of the anisotropic constant for the ligand hyperfine interaction in alkaline-earth fluorides is proposed. This relationship is used for calculating the distances between the magnetic ion and the fluorine ions involved in its nearest environment. The results of the calculations are in good agreement with the values obtained by other methods for both cubic and tetragonal fluorine centers in these crystals. The distances from the magnetic ion to different groups of nonequivalent fluorine ions of the nearest environment in Yb³⁺ trigonal centers of SrF₂ and BaF₂ are determined. It is found that the Yb³⁺ ion is slightly displaced along the trigonal axis away from the compensating fluorine ion.     

Hydrogen ion source with a cold magnetron cathode and magnetic plasma compression

A hydrogen ion source designed for the injector of a 16-MeV linear proton accelerator with an average beam current of ∼100 μA is presented. New design approaches allowing an improvement in the operating parameters of the ion source are proposed. The results of experimental tests of a source prototype operating in a pulsed mode with a repetition rate of 1–10 Hz and pulse duration of 100–600 μs are described.     

PIV studies of large scale structures in the near field of small aspect ratio elliptic Jets

The near flow field of small aspect ratio elliptic turbulent free jets (issuing from nozzle and orifice) was experimentally studied using a 2D PIV Two point velocity correla tions in these jets revealed the extent and orientation of the large scale structures in th e major and minor planes. The spatial filtering of the instantaneous velocity field using Gaussian convolution kernel shows that while a single large vortex ring circumscribing the jet seems to be present at the exit of nozzle, the orifice jet exhibited a number of smaller vortex ring pairs close to jet exit. The smaller length scale observed in the case of the orifice jet is rep resentative of the smaller azimuthal vor tex rings that generate axial vortex field as they are convected. This results in the axis-switching in th e case of orifice jet and may have a mechanism differ ent from the self induction process as observed in the case of contoured nozzle jet flow.
