On the twistor space of a quaternionic contact manifold

In this note, we prove that the CR manifold induced from the canonical parabolic geometry of a quaternionic contact (qc) manifold via a Fefferman-type construction is equivalent to the CR twistor space of the qc manifold defined by O. Biquard.     

Cultural influences on sex differentials in mathematics aptitude and achievement

Results of mathematics testing of 14‐year‐olds and college freshmen in the West Bank indicate more substantial variation on the basis of cultural factors than on the basis of gender. In particular, no significant difference in the mathematical abilities of men and women appeared in the college group.     

Real‐time measurement of peroxyacetyl nitrate using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry

The on‐line detection of gaseous peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT‐MS) has been investigated using a synthetic sample of PAN in air at a humidity of ～30%. Using the H₃O⁺ reagent ion, signals due to PAN at m/z 122, 77 and 95 have been identified. These correspond to protonated PAN, protonated peractetic acid and its water cluster, respectively. These products and their energetics have been probed through quantum mechanical calculations. The rate coefficient of H₃O⁺ has been estimated to be 4.5 × 10^?9 cm³ s^?1, leading to a PAN sensitivity of 138 cps/ppbv. This gives a limit of detection of 20 pptv in 10 s using the [M+H]⁺ ion of PAN at m/z 122. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

A dynamic model for road protection against flooding

This paper focuses on the problem of identifying optimal protection strategies to reduce the impact of flooding on a road network. We propose a dynamic mixed-integer programming model that extends the classic concept of road network protection by shifting away from single-arc fortifications to a more general and realistic approach involving protection plans that cover multiple components. We also consider multiple disruption scenarios of varying magnitude. To efficiently solve large problem instances, we introduce a customised GRASP heuristic. Finally, we provide some analysis and insights from a case study of the Hertfordshire road network in the East of England. Results show that optimal protection strategies mainly involve safeguarding against flooding events that are small and likely to occur, whereas implementing higher protection standards are not considered cost-effective.     

Structure and ion exchange properties of a new cobalt borate with a tunnel structure "templated" by Na+

The new anhydrous borate Na2Co2B12O21 has been synthesized by flux methods and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (space group I2/a with a = 17.1447(15) A, b = 4.5530(5) A, c = 19.4408(15) A, beta = 103.212(5) degrees , V = 1477.4(2) A3, Z = 4). Refinement of its structure reveals it is the first metaborate exhibiting a tunnel network, with internal dimensions of 4.5 x 8.8 A2. Further single-crystal diffraction studies show that the Na+ ions within the tunnels are exchangeable with Li+ along with the absorption of water molecules to form Li2(H2O)2Co2B12O21, making this compound a unique non-siliceous zeotype.     

Amphipols can support the activity of a membrane enzyme

Amphipathic polymers ("amphipols") were introduced several years ago (Tribet, C.; Audebert, R.; Popot, J.-L. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 1996, 93, 15047-15050) as an alternative method for solubilizing integral membrane proteins in stable, nativelike conformations. However, direct maintenance of full membrane protein functionality in amphipol solutions has not previously been demonstrated in the absence of added lipid or detergent. In this contribution, the first zwitterionic amphipol "PMAL-B-100" is introduced. PMAL-B-100 not only maintains membrane protein structure and solubility, but also supports the full catalytic activity of an integral membrane enzyme, diacylglycerol kinase, in the complete absence of additional lipid or detergent. All of the roles which a lipid bilayer normally plays in maintaining diacylglycerol kinase's structure and in facilitating catalysis are satisfied by the environment and interactions supplied by PMAL-B-100.     

Improved measurement of Vub with inclusive semileptonic B decays

We report a new measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa parameter Vub made with a sample of 9.7 x 10(6) BB- events collected with the CLEO II detector. Using heavy quark theory, we combine the observed yield of leptons from semileptonic B decay in the end-point momentum interval 2.2-2.6 GeV/c with recent CLEO II data on B-->X(s)gamma to find Vub = (4.08+/-0.34+/-0.44+/-0.16+/-0.24)x10(-3), where the first two uncertainties are experimental and the last two are from theory.
