A two-atom blocking model has been developed to analyze surface blocking patterns recently obtained in medium energy ion scattering experiments. In the model the mean square thermal vibration amplitude of a surface atom can be used as a fitting parameter in comparison with experimental results. Anisotropic surface vibrations have been taken into account by assuming a non-spherical Gaussian probability distribution for the thermal displacement of the surface atom. In addition, some analytical expressions have been derived for the effective nuber of target atoms contributing to the yield of ions backscattered into a blocking direction.  相似文献

Abstract

Understanding the carbon (C) cycle in grassland pasture systems requires more information about the fate of decomposing dung material within the soil. In this soil lysimeter study we successfully applied the natural 13C abundance labelling technique to trace dung-C within a temperate grassland soil. Dung was collected from beef steers fed on either maize (a C4 plant) or perennial ryegrass (a C3 plant) silages, and applied to a freely draining (C3) grassland soil. Leachates were collected from soil lysimeters (0–2.5) and (0–10 cm soil depth) to determine the organic carbon and 13C content of < 0.7 μm filtered solution. Leachates were taken from (i) control, no dung added, (ii) C3 dung and (iii) C4 dung amended soil. Results showed that, (i) the addition of dung resulted in a tenfold increase in C lost from the lysimeters in drainage waters, (ii) up to 50% of the C present in the leachates was ‘native’ soil C and (iii) the application of dung produced a ‘priming’ effect. Further work is required to verify; (i) whether increased leaching of native C following dung application is a ‘true priming’ phenomenon, or merely the result of ‘displacement’ or ‘pool substitution’ of soil C, and (ii) the precise conditions and mechanisms under which organic amendments induce a true ‘priming’ effect in grassland and other agricultural soils.  相似文献

Quantum-enhanced metrology infers an unknown quantity with accuracy beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL). Feedback-based metrological techniques are promising for beating the SQL but devising the feedback procedures is difficult and inefficient. Here we introduce an efficient self-learning swarm-intelligence algorithm for devising feedback-based quantum metrological procedures. Our algorithm can be trained with simulated or real-world trials and accommodates experimental imperfections, losses, and decoherence.  相似文献

We present charged-particle multiplicities as a function of pseudorapidity and collision centrality for the 197Au+197Au reaction at square root[s(NN)] = 200 GeV. For the 5% most central events we obtain dN(ch)/deta/(eta = 0) = 625+/-55 and N(ch)/(-4.7< or =eta < or =4.7) = 4630 +/- 370, i.e., 14% and 21% increases, respectively, relative to square root[s(NN)] = 130 GeV collisions. Charged-particle production per pair of participant nucleons is found to increase from peripheral to central collisions around midrapidity. These results constrain current models of particle production at the highest RHIC energy.  相似文献

The usefulness of the fluorescent probe ruthenium tris(2,2′-dipyridyl) dichloride hydrate (RTDP) for the quantitative imaging of oxygen in single cells was investigated utilizing fluorescence lifetime imaging. The results indicate that the fluorescence behavior of RTDP in the presence of oxygen can be described by the Stem-Volmer equation. This shows that fluorescence quenching by oxygen is a dynamic quenching process. In addition, it was demonstrated that the fluorescence lifetime of RTDP is insensitive to pH, ion concentration, and cellular contents. This implies that a simple calibration procedure in buffers can be used to quantify oxygen concentrations within cells. First fluorescence imaging experiments on J774 macrophages show a nonuniform fluorescence intensity and a uniform fluorescence lifetime image. This indicates that the RTDP is heterogeneously partitioned throughout the cells, while the oxygen concentration is constant.  相似文献

Ultraviolet broadband light spanning 337–405 nm was produced in a single-mode optical fiber primarily by stimulated Raman scattering. Pulses of 4 ns duration at 337 nm were coupled into a 50 m long ultraviolet-grade fiber featuring single-mode operation in the 320–450 nm range. Significant spectral broadening was achieved with pulses of only ∼10 W peak power. Our experiments demonstrate the potential for a source with ∼104 times the spectral radiance of a quartz tungsten halogen lamp, which is currently used for many applications in this wavelength range. Identified particle elliptic flow results are presented for the Au+Au reaction at sNN=200GeV as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. Data at pseudorapidities η≈0,1, and 3.4 were obtained using the two BRAHMS spectrometers. Differential v2 (η,pt) values for a given particle type are found to be essentially constant over the covered pseudorapidity range, in contrast to the integral v2 values which have previously been observed to decrease at forward rapidities. A softening of the particle spectra at forward angles is found to account for at least part of the integral v2 falloff. The data are found to be consistent with existing constituent quark scaling systematics.  相似文献

The adiabatic theorem states that an initial eigenstate of a slowly varying Hamiltonian remains close to an instantaneous eigenstate of the Hamiltonian at a later time. We show that a perfunctory application of this statement is problematic if the change in eigenstate is significant, regardless of how closely the evolution satisfies the requirements of the adiabatic theorem. We also introduce an example of a two-level system with an exactly solvable evolution to demonstrate the inapplicability of the adiabatic approximation for a particular slowly varying Hamiltonian.  相似文献
