Synthesis of novel D-2'-deoxy-2'-C-difluoromethylene-4'-thiocytidine as a potential antitumor agent

[reaction: see text] 2'-Deoxy-2'-C-difluoromethylene-4'-thiocytidine (4) as a potential antitumor agent was synthesized starting from L-xylose via 2-deoxy-2-C-difluoromethylene-4-thiosugar as a key intermediate. An elimination product, 8, was always formed as the major product during removal of the protecting groups under acidic or basic conditions. However, utilizing neutral reaction conditions to remove the protecting groups afforded the desired product 4 exclusively.     

Catalytic Intermolecular Pauson - Khand Reactions in Supercritical Ethylene

Ethylene is not only a substrate, but also a solvent: Catalytic intermolecular Pauson - Khand reactions of terminal alkynes were carried out in supercritical ethylene to provide 2-substituted cyclopentenones in moderate to high yields [Eq. (1)]. Under these conditions, even a low pressure of CO (5 atm) is sufficient for the reaction to take place.     

Approximate controllability and regularity for semilinear retarded control systems

We deal with the approximate controllability for semilinear systems with time delay in a Hilbert space. First, we show the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the given systems with the more general Lipschitz continuity of nonlinear operator f fromR ×V toH. Thereafter, it is shown that the equivalence between the reachable set of the semilinear system and that of its corresponding linear system. Finally, we make a practical application of the conditions to the system with only discrete delay.     

Compatibilizing effect of polyarylate-polystyrene block copolymer in polyarylate/polystyrene blends

The compatibilizing effect of polyarylate-polystyrene (PAR-PS) block copolymer prepared from macroazo initiator was examined in polyarylate/polystyrene blends from the view-points of morphology, density, and thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties. PARPS block copolymer enhanced the mutual dissolution of the homopolymers. Reduced dispersed-domain size and increased density showed the efficiency of the block copolymer as a compatibilizing agent. Results from mechanical and rheological properties could also be explained by the compatibilizing effect of PAR-PS block copolymer in the blends. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Nanomanipulator-assisted fabrication and characterization of carbon nanotubes inside scanning electron microscope

We have installed two nanomanipulators, which can travel about 20mm with a minimum increment of 1 nm, for manipulation of nanostructured materials inside field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Both manipulators render motions in x, y, and z directions, providing various manipulation freedoms such as moving, bending, cutting, and biasing. In addition, we have conducted in situ characterization of the electrical breakdown of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Our results demonstrate the possibility that MWCNTs can be used as a gas sensor.     

Evidence for muon neutrino oscillation in an accelerator-based experiment

We present results for nu(mu) oscillation in the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. K2K uses an accelerator-produced nu(mu) beam with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV directed at the Super-Kamiokande detector. We observed the energy-dependent disappearance of nu(mu), which we presume have oscillated to nu(tau). The probability that we would observe these results if there is no neutrino oscillation is 0.0050% (4.0 sigma).     

Single-mode plane-polarized ytterbium-doped large-core fiber laser with 633-W continuous-wave output power

We demonstrate a cladding-pumped single-mode plane-polarized ytterbium-doped fiber laser generating 633 W of continuous-wave output power at 1.1 microm with 67% slope efficiency and a polarization extinction ratio better than 16 dB. The laser is end pumped through both fiber ends and shows no evidence of roll-over, even at the highest output power, which is limited only by the available pump power.     

Single-frequency, single-mode, plane-polarized ytterbium-doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier source with 264 W of output power

We present a single-frequency, single-mode, plane-polarized ytterbium-doped all-fiber master oscillator power amplifier source at 1060 nm generating 264 W of continuous-wave output power. The final-stage amplifier operated with a high gain of 19 dB and a high conversion efficiency of 68%. There was no evidence of rollover from stimulated Brillouin scattering even at the highest output power, and the maximum output was limited only by the available pump power.     

Quantum algorithms without initializing the auxiliary qubits

In this Letter, we construct the quantum algorithms for the Simon problem and the period-finding problem, which do not require initializing the auxiliary qubits involved in the process of functional evaluation but are as efficient as the original algorithms. In these quantum algorithms, one can use any arbitrarily mixed state as the auxiliary qubits, and furthermore can recover the state of the auxiliary qubits to the original one after completing the computations. Since the recovered state can be employed in any other computations, we obtain that a single preparation of the auxiliary qubits in an arbitrarily mixed state is sufficient to implement the iterative procedure in the Simon algorithm or the period-finding algorithm.
