Bismuth Triflate–Catalyzed Friedel–Crafts Acylations of Sydnones

Friedel–Crafts acylations of various 3-arylsydnones at the C4 position have been achieved in good yields using 4 equivalents of an alkyl anhydride and 25 mol% each of bismuth triflate and lithium perchlorate in anhydrous acetonitrile at 95 °C. Acylations appear to be faster with arylsydnones bearing electron-donating moieties and sterically unencumbered anhydrides.     

Efficiency consideration of generalized age replacement policy

Under the generalized age replacement policy, the system is replaced either at the predetermined age or upon failure if its corresponding repair time exceeds the threshold, whichever comes first. In this paper, we investigate the optimal choice of the pre‐determined preventive replacement age for a nonwarranted system, which minimizes the expected cost rate during the life cycle of the system from the customer's perspective under certain cost structures. Furthermore, we discuss several properties of such a generalized age replacement policy in comparison with the traditional age replacement policy. An efficiency, which represents the fractional time that the system is on, is defined under the proposed generalized age replacement policy and its monotonicity properties are investigated as well. The main objective of this study is to investigate the advantageous features of the generalized age replacement policy over the traditional age replacement policy with regard to the availability of the repairable system. Assuming that the system deteriorates with age, we illustrate our proposed optimal policies numerically and observe the impact of relevant parameters on the optimal preventive replacement age.     

On the law of the iterated logarithm for Brownian motion on compact manifolds

By taking a functional analytic point of view,we consider a family of distributions(continuous linear functionals on smooth functions),denoted by{μt,t0},associated to the law of the iterated logarithm for Brownian motion on a compact manifold.We give a complete characterization of the collection of limiting distributions of{μt,t0}.     

Effective refractive index and intermolecular forces associated with a phase of functional groups

Cases in which a functional groups form distinct phases are known in material science in general and specifically in polymer and surfactant sciences. To calculate the van der Waals forces associated with such phases there is a need to evaluate the refractive index of those phases. We expand and generalize a method to estimate the refractive index of such ‘functional group phase’ and discuss how to use the refractive indices to calculate the interaction energies associated with such functional group phases and thereby modify the total theoretically calculated van der Waals forces.     

Vocal problems among teachers: a review of prevalence, causes, prevention, and treatment

Voice disorders are thought to be one of the major occupational hazardsof school teaching. The resulting symptoms can affect teachers' ability to function in the classroom and prevent them from developing effective working relationships with other staff and students. Sick leave, speech pathology management, and surgical intervention can be costly. Severe voice problems can also result in a teacher permanently leaving the classroom. Despite the significant implications of voice disorders for teachers, this review of published research demonstrates that findings concerning the prevalence of voice problems in teachers and the causes and contributing factors of those voice problems are inconclusive. Similarly, previous research on the efficacy of prevention programs and treatment of voice problems in teachers provide few firm conclusions. Further research based on sound empirical data is needed, as many past studies have relied on anecdotal or self-report data. More operational definitions of what constitutes a voice disorder and the associated contributing factors should be adopted, along with the use of more instrumental measures and careful attention to methodology and appropriate statistical analyses. Only then will we have a sound basis for the development of effective prevention and education programs for teachers.     

Behaviour of queueing approximations based on sample moments

We investigate moment–based queueing approximations in the presence of sampling error. Let L be the steady–state mean number in the system for a GI/M/1 queue. We focus on the estimation of L under the assumption that only sample moments of the interarrival–time distribution are known. A simulation experiment is carried out for several interarrival–time distributions. For each case, sample moments from the interarrival–time distribution are matched to an approximating phase–type distribution and the corresponding estimate L is obtained. We show that the sampling error in the moments induces bias as well as variability in L. Based on our simulation experiment, we suggest matching only two moments when the sample coefficient of variation is low or when sample size is low; otherwise, matching three moments is preferable.     

Current Understanding and Review of the Literature: Vocal Fold Scarring

Vocal fold scarring is the greatest cause of poor voice after vocal fold injury. Scarring causes a disruption of the viscoelastic layered structure of the lamina propria, an increase in stiffness of the vibratory structure, and glottic incompetence. Current treatments for this complex condition are inconsistent and often produce suboptimal results. Research investigating this condition has dramatically increased over the last several years. The literature has been directed toward understanding vocal fold scarring at the biological level and translating this to the clinical forum. We present an up-to-date, thorough, and scholarly review of the literature in vocal fold scarring since 1996.
