We investigate the influence of confinement on the steady state microstructure of emulsions sheared between parallel plates, in a regime where the average droplet dimension is comparable to the gap width between the confining walls. Utilizing droplet velocimetry, we find that the droplets can organize into discrete layers under the influence of shear. The number of layers decreases from two (at relatively higher shear rates) to one (at lower shear rates), as the drops grow slightly larger due to coalescence. We argue that the layering and overall composition profile may be controlled by the interplay of droplet collisions (which can cause separation of droplet centers in the velocity gradient direction), droplet migration toward the centerline (due to wall effects), and droplet packing constraints. We also study the effects of mixture composition on droplet microstructure, and summarize these results in the form of a morphology diagram in the parameter space of mass fraction and shear rate. We find that formation of strings of the suspended phase (reported earlier by our group in flow-visualization studies on confined emulsions) is observed over a broad composition window. We also find a stable (nontransient) morphology wherein the droplets are arranged in highly ordered pearl-necklace chain structures.  相似文献

In contrast to a related iron—copper compound, the complex (π-C5H5)Ru(PPh3)2(C2Ph)CuCl is shown to be monomeric, and contains linear dicoordinate copper(I); the reactions of this and similar complexes with metal carbonyls are sources of new mixed-metal clusters, such as (π-C5H5)Fe2 Ru(C2Ph)(CO)6 (PPh3).  相似文献

In an extension of studies of flameless atomizers for atomic-absorption spectrometry, an electrically heated tungsten-rhenium alloy wire loop was examined. Reduction of metallic salts to ground-state metal atoms was accomplished with the high temperature produced by the loop. Lead and nickel were investigated. Experimental parameters such as wavelength, slit width, atomization temperature and sheathing gas flow rate were optimized. Absolute detection limits of 6.6·10?10 and 1.2·10?10, and absolute sensitivities of 7·10?10 and 8·10?11 g of lead, were established for unenclosed and enclosed cells, respectively. The interferences of twenty cations and sixteen anions were studied; foreign cations generally enhanced the lead absorption by retarding its vaporization, allowing the slow detection system to respond more efficiently. Nickel was investigated as a representative less volatile metal; an absolute detection limit of 1.6·10?9 and an absolute sensitivity of 9·10?10 g of nickel were established.  相似文献

N,N-Dimethyl diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, and N-monoisopropylaminoaphthylenesulfonyl derivatives of melanotropin inhibiting factor (MIF) and its metabolites were prepared, and their chromatographic behavior was investigated with thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), using five solvent systems on polyamide layers and ten solvent systems on muBondapak C18 and muBondapak phenyl columns. A mixture of MIF and its metabolites derivatized with Dns chloride was adequately resolved by two-dimensional chromatography on polyamide layer with solvent systems, formic acid-water (3:97) and benzene-acetic acid (9:1). Bns-MIF and its metabolites were separated with muBondapak C18 column with the solvent system acetonitrile-0.01 M sodium sulphate buffer, pH 7 (50:50). They were separated into five groups: Gly and Bns acid; Pro-Leu, Leu-Gly and Leu; Pro; Gly-NH2; and MIF. The alkylaminonaphthylenesulfonyl derivates had strong fluorescence, which permitted their detection at the level of 10(-11) to 10(-9) mol. Dns-MIF and its derivatives had the lowest detectable amounts. HPLC with the aid of the Dns derivation is reliable and fast, and is the preferable method for study of neuropeptide breakdown.  相似文献

Analytical techniques for the detection of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazatetracyclo(5.5.0.05,9.03,11)dodecane (CL-20) in water and soil are developed by adapting methods traditionally used for the analysis of nitroaromatics. CL-20 (a new explosives compound) is thermally labile, exhibits high polarity, and has low solubility in water. These constraints make the use of specialized sample handling, preparation, extraction, and analysis necessary. The ability to determine the concentrations of this new explosive compound in environmental matrices is helpful in understanding the environmental fate and effects of CL-20; understanding the physical, chemical, and biological fate of CL-20; and can be used in developing remediation technologies and determining their efficiency. The toxicity and mobility of new explosives in soil and groundwater are also of interest, and analytical techniques for quantitating CL-20 and its degradation products in soil and natural waters make these investigations possible.  相似文献
