Synthesen von Mannich-Basen von Hydroxy-indolen. 3. Mitteilung über synthetische Indol-Verbindungen [1]

The reactivity of hydroxy-indoles under the conditions of the Mannich-reaction has been studied. The electrophilic side-chain enters in each case in a position ortho to the phenolic group. 4-Hydroxy-indole is substituted in the 5-, 5-hydroxy-indole in the 4-, 6-hydroxy-indole in the 7-, and 7-hydroxy-indole probably in the 6-position. The structures of the Mannich bases from 4-, 5- and 6-hydroxy-indole have been confirmed by comparison of the hydroxy-methyl-indoles obtained by reductive desamination with hydroxy-methyl-indoles prepared by unambiguous total synthesis.

Über die thermische Umlagerung von o-Benzochinolen

Zusammenfassung Durch kurzzeitiges Erhitzen von monomeren o-Benzochinolen oder deren Dimerisationsprodukten in der Gasphase auf 450^o entstehen in guter Ausbeute verschieden substituierte Cyclopentenonverbindungen. Der Mechanismus der Thermoumlagerung ist aber unbekannt, so daß Rückschlüsse auf die Konstitution der dimeren o-Benzochinole unmöglich sind.     

Cholesterol-based hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals

Hydrogen bonding is a powerful tool for assembling molecules and building new liquid crystalline structures. In this study, non-symmetric dimesogens were prepared by intermolecular hydrogen bonding between rationally designed H-bond donor (3-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentanoic acid) and acceptor (4-(pyridine-4-ylmethyleneimino)phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoate) moieties. Their liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Cholesteric and smectic phases were observed. As for the covalently linked dimesogens, several types of smectic periodicities occur for these H-bonded cholesteryl compounds depending on the molecular parameters.     

Quantum chemistry investigation on the active site of Mn-SOD

In this paper, we carried out a theoretical study on the active site structures of the Mn-SOD with ab initio Hartree–Fock SCF method, and analyzed the molecular orbital energies, charges and atomic orbital contribution to the frontier molecular orbital.     

Comparison of the thermal behavior of three cellulose fibers mercerized or submitted to solar degradation

Comparison of Lyocell, modal and viscose fibers was performed by means of differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Thermal analysis was performed in air atmosphere. Samples were mercerized (21.3 g 100 mL-1) or submitted to solar radiation (seven months). Solar degraded samples presents a higher thermal stability and are initially less degraded. Furthermore, Lyocell fiber is the most stable under thermal degradation conditions. Heating produces a reduction of the fiber diameter (about 50%). This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.
