Mössbauer spectroscopy applied to the study of Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets corrosion

Powdered Nd-Fe-B-type permanent magnets were heated at 200 C for times up to 32 days. The evolution of the Nd₂Fe₁₄B magnetic phase, followed by⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, evidenced the positive influence of both the hydrogen decrepitation process and Co, Nb and V additives on the corrosion resistance.     

Complex calculators in the classroom: theoretical and practical reflections on teaching pre-calculus

University and older school students following scientific courses now use complex calculators with graphical, numerical and symbolic capabilities. In this context, the design of lessons for 11th grade pre-calculus students was a stimulating challenge.In the design of lessons, emphasising the role of mediation of calculators and the development of schemes of use in an 'instrumental genesis' was productive. Techniques, often discarded in teaching with technology, were viewed as a means to connect task to theories. Teaching techniques of use of a complex calculator in relation with 'traditional' techniques was considered to help students to develop instrumental and paper/pencil schemes, rich in mathematical meanings and to give sense to symbolic calculations as well as graphical and numerical approaches.The paper looks at tasks and techniques to help students to develop an appropriate instrumental genesis for algebra and functions, and to prepare for calculus. It then focuses on the potential of the calculator for connecting enactive representations and theoretical calculus. Finally, it looks at strategies to help students to experiment with symbolic concepts in calculus.This revised version was published online in September 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of redox transitions in photosynthetic reaction centers: comparison of perfusion- and light-induced difference spectra

Chemically induced Fourier transform infrared difference spectra associated with redox transitions of several primary electron donors and acceptors in photosynthetic reaction centers (RCs) have been compared with the light-induced FTIR difference spectra involving the same cofactors. The RCs are deposited on an attenuated total reflection (ATR) prism and form a film that is enclosed in a flow cell. Redox transitions in the film of RCs can be repetitively induced either by perfusion of buffers poised at different redox potentials or by illumination. The perfusion-induced ATR-FTIR difference spectra for the oxidation of the primary electron donor P in the RCs of the purple bacteria Rb. sphaeroides and Rp. viridis and P700 in the photosystem 1 of Synechocystis 6803, as well as the Q(A)/Q(A) transition of the quinone acceptor (Q(A)) in Rb. sphaeroides RCs are reported for the first time. They are compared with the light-induced ATR-FTIR difference spectra P+Q(A)/PQ(A) for the RCs of Rb. sphaeroides and P700+/P700 for photosystem 1. It is shown that the perfusion-induced and light-induced ATR-FTIR difference spectra recorded on the same RC film display identical signal to noise ratios when they are measured under comparable conditions. The ATR-FTIR difference spectra are very similar to the equivalent FTIR difference spectra previously recorded upon photochemical or electrochemical excitation of these RCs in the more conventional transmission mode. The ATR-FTIR technique requires a smaller amount of sample compared with transmission FTIR and allows precise control of the aqueous environment of the RC films.

N-Functionalised heterocyclic dicarbene complexes of silver: Synthesis and structural studies

A range of new diimidazolium salts, held together by an alkyl unit and bearing alcohol pendant arms on their nitrogen, was synthesized. A short modular reaction pathway leads to the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors, differing by the flexibility of the bridge, the steric bulk of substituents in α-position of the OH groups and the anions. Treatment of diimidazolium salts with Ag₂O yields Ag^I(carbene)₂ complexes. The related trimethylene-bridged bis-NHC silver complexes 6 and 7 were crystallised with di-tosylate and di-hexafluorophosphate anions, respectively. Their X-ray structures revealed dimeric species, involving two ligands with different arrangements around the Ag cations, leading to crossed and parallel conformations.
