Interactions of thiophenes and acidophilic,thermophilic bacteria

The growth and oxygen consumption of a variety of thermophilic, acidophilic bacteria in the presence of thiophene-2-carboxylate (T2C) and dibenzothiophene (DBT) have been determined. T2C was extremely toxic to the acidophiles in comparison with neutrophiles, but appeared to be degraded by a heterotrophicSulfolobus- like thermophile. DBT proved to be unstable at high temperatures, even in the absence of bacteria, and was not a substrate for the thermophiles.     

The problem of distinguishing between a center and a focus for nilpotent and degenerate analytic systems

In this work we study the centers of planar analytic vector fields which are limit of linear type centers. It is proved that all the nilpotent centers are limit of linear type centers and consequently the Poincaré-Liapunov method to find linear type centers can be also used to find the nilpotent centers. Moreover, we show that the degenerate centers which are limit of linear type centers are also detectable with the Poincaré-Liapunov method.     

Synthesis and Characterization of a [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H2O)4] Complex Bearing Paramagnetic Carboxylate Ligands. Use of a Modified Acid Replacement Synthetic Approach

Summary.  A new modified approach for the synthesis of Mn₁₂ clusters, based on the use of complex [Mn₁₂O₁₂(O₂C ^t Bu)₁₆(H₂O)₄] (2) as starting material to promote the acidic ligand replacement, is presented here. This new synthetic approach allowed us to obtain complex [Mn₁₂O₁₂(O₂CC₆H₄N(O^•) ^t Bu)₁₆(H₂O)₄] (3), whose preparation remained elusive by direct replacement of the acetate groups of Mn₁₂Ac (1). Complex 3 bearing open-shell radical units, was prepared to increase the total spin number of its ground state, and consequently, to increase T _B , with the expectation that the radical ligands may couple ferromagnetically with the Mn₁₂ core. Unfortunately, magnetic measurements of complex 3 revealed that the sixteen radical carboxylate ligands interact antiferromagnetically with the Mn₁₂ core to yield a S = 2 magnetic ground state. Phase portraits of quadratic polynomial vector fields having a rational first integral of degree 2

We classify all the global phase portraits of the quadratic polynomial vector fields having a rational first integral of degree 2. In other words we characterize all the global phase portraits of the quadratic polynomial vector fields having all their orbits contained in conics. For such a vector field there are exactly 25 different global phase portraits in the Poincaré disc, up to a reversal of sense.     

A facile and effective synthesis of lamivudine 5′-diphosphate

We report on the first solution synthesis of lamivudine 5′-diphosphate in both high yield and purity. Efficient synthesis of lamivudine 5′-monophosphate was obtained through lamivudine H-phosphonate oxidation by (−)-(8,8-dichlorocamphorylsulfonyl)oxaziridine.Diphosphorylation was performed by nucleophilic substitution of the phosphorimidazolate derivative of lamivudine. HPLC coupled with UV or MS detection was found to be an invaluable tool for the follow-up of phosphorylation reactions.     

Ion binding to polyelectrolytes: Monte Carlo simulations versus classical mean field theories

The influence of ion size and surface charge model in titrations of ionizable polyelectrolytes is studied by means of the Semi Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation method in the context of the primitive model. Three models describing a discrete distribution of charged functional groups on the polyelectrolyte and different values for the radius of the background electrolyte spanning from ionic to hydrated radii values were analyzed. The polyelectrolyte titrations were simulated by calculating the degree of ionization versus pH curves at two ionic strengths. The results allow us to quantify the impact of the sizes of the background salt ions and surface functional groups of the polyelectrolyte on the dissociation degree. This influence is explained in terms of the effectiveness of the screening of the charged surface sites. Finally, by comparison with the Non-Linear Poisson–Boltzmann model, the influence of ionic correlations and finite size of the solution ions is assessed.     

Telegraphic Transport Processes and Their Fractional Generalization: A Review and Some Extensions

We address the problem of telegraphic transport in several dimensions. We review the derivation of two and three dimensional telegrapher’s equations—as well as their fractional generalizations—from microscopic random walk models for transport (normal and anomalous). We also present new results on solutions of the higher dimensional fractional equations.
