The stereochemistry of the hydroboration rearrangement.

Hydroboration of 1,2-dimethylcyclopentene with BH₃·THF affords a product in which boron migrates $\text{stereospecifically}$ at low temperature into the cyclopentane ring. At higher temperatures subsequent (non-stereospecific) isomerisation occurs via a competing reaction mechanism.

Eine zylindrische Szintillationskammer günstigster Abmessungen bietet die Möglichkeit, Personen, die²²⁶Ra inkorporiert haben, ohne vorhergehende Anreicherung des Atem-Radons zu kontrollieren sowie Lebensmittel und andere Proben von niedrigem²²⁶Ra- und²²²Rn-Gehalt zu analysieren.

Measurement of small amounts of radium and radon

Summary Various procedures employed for the measurement of slight²²⁶radium and²²²radon contents have also been used for the radiation hygiene. A cylindrical scintillation chamber of the most favorable dimensions offers the possibility of checking persons who have incorporated²²⁶Ra, without prior concentration of the breath-radon, and also in the analysis of foods and other samples that contain minute amounts of²²⁶Ra and²²²Ra.

Summary 1. The condensation of the anomeric methyl 2,3-di-O-benzyl-D-xylofuranosiduronaldehydes with nitromethane has been studied.2. It has been shown that the position of the substituent at the glycosidic center has an influence on the steric directivity of this reaction.3. Microenvironmental differences amongst micelles of various shapes and structures

Micelles of different amphiphiles adopt different shapes and internal packing arrangements in water, depending on their chemical structures and the conditions of the medium. Two microenvironmental features, namely the polarity and the microviscosity that the aggregate offers to a solubilized molecule, have been monitored using extrinsic fluorescence probes. While the differences between micelles of spherical and rod-like shapes are not always distinct, stacked micelles and peptide micelles offer distinctly lower polarity and higher microviscosity to solubilizates than the others.     

Trace-Aktivitätskoeffizienten und Ionenassoziation von Natriummetawolframat im System Natriummetawolframat-Natriumperchlorat-Wasser

Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird das Sedimentations-gleichgewicht des Systems Na₆[H₂W₁₂O₄₀]-NaClO₄-H₂O bei 25 °C untersucht. Die scheinbare Ladungszahl des Natriummetawolframats wird als Funktion der NaClO₄-MolalitätmNaClO₄ ermittelt. Aus dieser Abhängigkeit kann für die summarische Dissoziation des NatriummetawolframatsNa₂[H₂W₁₂O_4o] 6Na⁺ + [H₂W₁₂O₄₀]^6– die DissoziationskonstanteK in Gegenwart von NaClO₄ als Fremdelektrolyt zuK=0,08 mol⁶·kg^–6 bestimmt werden.Der Kreuzdifferentialquotient ( _PXz , ist der Trace-Aktivitätskoeffizient des Natriummetawolframats) wird ebenfalls als Funktion der NaClO₄-Molalität ermittelt.Die Konzentrationsabhängigkeit des Trace-Aktivitätskoeffizienten zeigt einen Verlauf, wie er unseres Wissens nach noch nicht von anderen Autoren beobachtet wurde.

Summary An ultracentrifugal study of the sedimentation equilibrium of the system Na₂[H₂W₁₂O₄₀]-NaClO₄-H₂Oat 25 °C is presented. The dependency of the apparent charge of the sodium metatungstate on NaClO₄-molality is investigated. From these data the dissociation constant for the dissociation of the sodium metatungstate in the presence of NaClO₄ according to the equationNa[H₂W₁₂O₄₀] 6Na⁺ + [H₂W₁₂O₄₀]^6– is calculated toK=0.08 mol⁶·kg^–6. The cross differential quotient ( _PXz is the trace activity coefficient of the sodium metatungstate) shows a behavior in its dependence on NaClO₄-molality which to our knowledge has not yet been reported by other authors.

Heterogenization of a chiral bis(oxazoline) catalyst by grafting onto silica

[reaction: see text] We report here the first heterogenization of a bis(oxazoline) ligand on an inorganic (silica) surface. The activity and enantioselectivity of this new material as a catalyst for the Diels-Alder reaction were checked, and it was shown that under certain conditions enantioselectivities similar to those of the homogeneous catalyst are reached. It was also shown that under these conditions the catalyst can be recycled without loss of activity or selectivity.     

Comparison of formats for the development of fiber-optic biosensors utilizing sol-gel derived materials entrapping fluorescently-labelled protein

The development of fiber-optic biosensors requires that a biorecognition element and a fluorescent reporter group be immobilized at or near the surface of an optical element such as a planar waveguide or optical fiber. In this study, we examined a model biorecognition element-reporter group couple consisting of human serum albumin that was site-selectively labelled at Cys 34 with iodoacetoxy-nitrobenzoxadiazole (HSA-NBD). The labelled protein was encapsulated into sol-gel derived materials that were prepared either as monoliths, as beads that were formed at the distal tip of a fused silica optical fiber, or as thin films that were dipcast along the length of a glass slide or optical fiber. For fiber-based studies, the entrapped protein was excited using a helium-cadmium laser that was launched into a single optical fiber, and emission was separated from the incident radiation using a perforated mirror beam-splitter, and detected using a monochromator-photomultiplier tube assembly. Changes in fluorescence intensity were generated by denaturant-induced conformational changes in the protein or by iodide quenching. The analytical parameters of merit for the different encapsulation formats, including minimum protein loading level, response time and limit-of-detection, were examined, as were factors such as protein accessibility, leaching and photobleaching. Overall, the results indicated that both beads and films were suitable for biosensor development. In both formats, a substantial fraction of the entrapped protein remained accessible, and the entrapped protein retained a large degree of conformational flexibility. Thin films showed the most rapid response times, and provided good detection limits for a model analyte. However, the entrapment of proteins into beads at the distal tip of fibers provided better signal-to-noise and signal-to-background ratios, and required less protein for preparation. Hence, beads appear to be the most viable method for interfacing of proteins to optical fibers.

-(Thiocarbamoylthio)propionic acids derived from alkaloids, morpholine, and piperidine and their esters, amides, and nitriles were prepared by reactions of the corresponding dithiocarbamic acids with acrylic acid and its derivatives. A series of bicyclo[2.2.2]octane derivatives whose absolute configurations are known through chemical correlations with confirmed reference products (bicyclo[2.2.2]octanol, bicyclo[2.2.2]octene carboxylic acid) have been prepared.     

The study of coordinative interaction in the organoaluminium derivatives of substituted phenols

Intramolecular coordination in dimethylaluminium phenoxides (with an ortho-substituted ring) was investigated. Only strongly donating groups in the phenoxy ring (COOMe) displayed strong intramolecular coordination. All compounds investigated formed donor-acceptor complexes with hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA). Dimethylaluminium methylsalicilate coordinated HMPA without splitting the intramolecular carbonyl oxygen—aluminium bond, which suggests formation of the pentacoordinated aluminium atom.
