Image charge detection has been used to measure the charge and velocity of individual electrosprayed water droplets. With a positive bias on the electrospray needle the majority of the droplets are, as expected, positively charged. However, a small fraction, surprisingly, carry a negative charge. Plausible explanations for the presence of the negatively charged droplets are discussed. In particular, we consider the possibility of the negatively charged droplets resulting from a bipolar fission process where the incorporation of a small negatively charged droplet between two larger positively charged progeny lowers the energy barrier for symmetric fission. 相似文献

The structures and properties of unsolvated peptides large enough to possess secondary structure have been examined by experiments and simulations. Some of the factors that stabilize unsolvated helices and sheets have been identified. The charge, in particular, plays a critical role in stabilizing alpha-helices and destabilizing beta-sheets. Some helices are much more stable in vacuum than in aqueous solution. Factors like helix propensity, context, and the incorporation of specific stabilizing interactions have been examined. The helix propensities in vacuum differ from those found in solution. Studies of the hydration of unsolvated peptides can be performed one water molecule at a time. The first few water molecules only bind weakly to unsolvated peptides, and they bind much more strongly to some conformations than to others. The most favorable binding locations are not the protonation sites, but clefts or pockets where a water molecule can establish a network of hydrogen bonds. Non-covalent interactions between secondary structure elements leads to the formation of tertiary structure. Helical peptides assemble into complexes with a variety of intriguing structures. The intramolecular coupling of helices to make antiparallel coiled-coil geometries has also been investigated with model peptides. 相似文献

The use of infrared laser-assisted fluorination to release oxygen from milligram quantities of silicates or other oxide mineral grains is a well-established technique. However, relatively few studies have reported the optimisation of this procedure for oxygen-17 isotope measurements. We describe here details of an analytical system using infrared (10 μm) laser-assisted fluorination, in conjunction with a dual inlet mass spectrometer of high resolving power ( approximately 250) to provide (17)O and (18)O oxygen isotope measurements from 0.5-2 mg of silicates or other oxide mineral grains. Respective precisions (1) of typically 0.08 and 0.04 per thousand are obtained for the complete analytical procedure. Departures from the mass-dependent oxygen isotope fractionation line are quantified by Delta(17)O; our precision (1) of such measurements on individual samples is shown to be +/-0.024 per thousand. In turn, this permits the offset between parallel, mass-dependent fractionation lines to be characterised to substantially greater precision than has been possible hitherto. Application of this system to investigate the (17)O versus (18)O relationship for numerous terrestrial whole-rock and mineral samples, of diverse geological origins and age, indicates that the complete data set may be described by a single, mass-dependent fractionation line of slope 0.5244+/- 0.00038 (standard error). Fast atom bombardment, combined with high-energy collision-induced tandem mass spectrometry, has been used to investigate gas-phase metal-ion interactions with captopril, enalaprilat and lisinopril, all angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.Suggestions for the location of metal-binding sites are presented. For captopril, metal binding occurs most likely at both the sulphur and the nitrogen atom. For enalaprilat and lisinopril, binding preferably occurs at the amine nitrogen. Vibrationally-resolved photoelectron spectra of AlMoO(y)(-) (y = 1-4) are presented and analyzed in conjunction with density functional theory computational results. The structures determined for the AlMoO(y) anion and neutral clusters suggest ionic bonding between Al(+) and a MoO(y)(-) or MoO(y)(-2) moiety, and point to the relative stability of Mo=O versus Al=O bonds. The highest occupied and partially occupied orbitals in the anions and neutrals can be described as Mo atomic-like orbitals, so while the Mo is in a higher oxidation state than Al, the most energetically accessible electrons are localized on the molybdenum center. 相似文献

Water adsorption measurements have been performed under equilibrium conditions for unsolvated Ac-A(n)K+H(+) and Ac-KA(n)+H(+) peptides with n = 4 - 10. Previous work on larger alanine peptides has shown that two dominant conformations (helices and globules) are present for these peptides and that water adsorbs much more strongly to the globules than to the helices. All the Ac-KA(n)+H(+) peptides studied here (which are expected to be globular) adsorb water strongly, and so do the Ac-A(n)K+H(+) peptides with n < 8. However, for Ac-A(n)K+H(+) with n = 8-10 there is a substantial drop in the propensity to adsorb water. This result suggests that Ac-A(8)K+H(+) is the smallest Ac-A(n)K+H(+) peptide to have a significant helical content in the gas phase. Water adsorption measurements for Ac-V(n)K+H(+) and Ac-L(n)K+H(+) with n = 5-10 suggest that the helix emerges at n = 8 for these peptides as well. 相似文献

Calorimetry measurements, performed by multicollision induced dissociation, have been used to probe the melting of a number of (NaCl)nNa+ clusters with n=22-37. The clusters anneal at 225-325 K and melt at 750-850 K. (NaCl)22Na+ and (NaCl)37Na+, which can adopt geometries that are perfect fragments of the bulk lattice melt at around 850 K. The other clusters, which (except for n=31) must have defects, melt at temperatures which are up to 100 K lower than the perfect nanocrystals. The internal energy distributions become bimodal near the melting temperature. This is the signature of slow dynamic phase coexistence where clusters spontaneously jump back and forth between the solid and liquid states with an average period that is longer than required for thermal equilibration. The jump frequency must be between 10(4) and 10(7) s(-1) for the bimodal distribution to be observable in our experiments. The (NaCl)nNa+ clusters can dissociate by an unusual thermally activated process where melting and freezing raise the internal energy to generate hot solid clusters that can sublime before they cool to the ambient temperature. 相似文献

Ion mobility and calorimetry measurements have been used to probe the nature of the phase transitions in gallium clusters with 29-55 atoms. While most clusters appear to undergo a first-order transition between solidlike and liquidlike phases, a few show the signature of melting without a significant latent heat. These transitions appear to be the finite size analogue of a second-order phase transition, and they presumably occur for some cluster sizes because their solidlike phase is amorphous. 相似文献

The reactions of Mo2Oy- suboxide clusters with both methane and ethane have been studied with a combination of mass spectrometry, anion photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Reactions were carried out under "gentle" and "violent" conditions. For methane, a number of products appeared under the gentler source conditions that were more logically attributed to dissociation of Mo2Oy- clusters upon reacting with methane to form MoCH2-, Mo(O)CH2-, and HMo(O2)CH3-. With ethane, products observed under the same gentle conditions were Mo(O)C2H2-, Mo(O)C2H4-, Mo(O2)C2H4-, and Mo(O2)(C2H5)2-. As expected, more products were observed when the reactions were carried out under violent conditions. The photoelectron spectra obtained for these species were compared to calculated adiabatic and vertical electron affinities and vibrational frequencies, leading to definitive structural assignments for several of the products. 相似文献
