Determining the porosity of synthetic opals and porous silicon by x-ray methods

A simple method is proposed for determining the porosity of fractal materials by measuring the absorption of x rays as they pass through these samples. The method makes it possible to measure the integrated porosity of objects rapidly, does not require special preparation of the objects, is not contaminating, and does not destroy their structure. Lattice instability of Ni2MnGa

Anomalies have been detected in the temperature behavior of the physical properties of Ni₂MnGa in the temperature interval preceding the martensitic transformation, which is attributed to TA ₂ phonon mode condensation at T=T _I>T _m (T _m is the martensitic transition temperature). Influence of the domain structure on the permeability of planar hexaferrites in the natural ferrimagnetic resonance region

A calculation is presented of the permeability of hexaferrites with an easy magnetization plane in the region of natural ferrimagnetic resonance and in the presence of a domain structure. It is shown that the domain structure strongly influences both the magnitude of the permeability and the natural ferrimagnetic resonance frequency. The expressions obtained are compared with the results of calculations of the natural ferrimagnetic resonance spectra of single-domain planar hexaferrites. State University, Tomsk. Integrable Structure of Conformal Field Theory II. Q-operator and DDV equation

This paper is a direct continuation of [1] where we began the study of the integrable structures in Conformal Field Theory. We show here how to construct the operators ${\bf Q}_{\pm}(\lambda)$ which act in the highest weight Virasoro module and commute for different values of the parameter λ. These operators appear to be the CFT analogs of the Q - matrix of Baxter [2], in particular they satisfy Baxter's famous T- Q equation. We also show that under natural assumptions about analytic properties of the operators as the functions of λ the Baxter's relation allows one to derive the nonlinear integral equations of Destri-de Vega (DDV) [3] for the eigenvalues of the Q-operators. We then use the DDV equation to obtain the asymptotic expansions of the Q - operators at large λ; it is remarkable that unlike the expansions of the T operators of [1], the asymptotic series for Q(λ) contains the “dual” nonlocal Integrals of Motion along with the local ones. We also discuss an intriguing relation between the vacuum eigenvalues of the Q - operators and the stationary transport properties in the boundary sine-Gordon model. On this basis we propose a number of new exact results about finite voltage charge transport through the point contact in the quantum Hall system. Polymorphism of biperiodic stripe domain structures

Magnetic-field-induced polymorphism of biperiodic stripe domain structures of films with a positive anisotropy constant and easy axis parallel to the normal to the surface is studied. A symmetry classification of the observed types of domain structures is performed, and the phase diagram of the films in the (H _⊥, H _∥) plane, where H _⊥ and H _∥ are, respectively, the components of the magnetic field vector perpendicular and parallel to the normal to the surface, is determined. Approximation of solutions of operator-differential equations by operator polynomials

We prove theorems that characterize the classes of functions whose best approximations by algebraic polynomials tend to zero with given order. We construct approximations of solutions of operator-differential equations by polynomials in the inverse operator. Asymptotic behavior of neutron small-angle multiple scattering spectra

The asymptotic behavior of the spectra for large values of the scattering vector for the case of elastic multiple small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. An expansion of the spectrum in terms of the reciprocal of the magnitude of the momentum transfer is obtained taking account of the influence of the instrumental line. It is shown that, to within some factor, the leading term of the expansion is identical to the differential single-scattering cross section averaged over a statistical ensemble of particles; several subsequent terms in the expansion are calculated and the range of applicability of the resulting expressions is determined. The asymptotic behavior of the multiple SANS spectrum is measured, using a two-crystal neutron spectrometer, for samples of an HTSC ceramic, the alloy Fe-Ni, and Al powder.
