Highly a-axis-textured CrO2 films have been deposited on Al2O3 (0001) substrates by chemical vapor deposition. CrO2 has been found to have highly a-axis (010)-oriented columnar growth on a Cr2O3 (0001) initial layer. The six-fold surface symmetry of the Cr2O3 initial layer leads to three equivalent in-plane orientations of the a-axis-oriented CrO2 unit cell. We report Cr L2,3 X-ray magnetic circular dichroism data along the surface normal and at 60° off-normal sample orientation. For a 60° sample
alignment, a strong increase of the projected orbital moment could be observed for unoccupied majority t2g states using moment analysis. Therefore, the c axis is identified as the intrinsic magnetic easy axis of CrO2. In addition, a small spin moment and a very strong magnetic dipole term Tz have been found.

A new model is presented which explains well the dramatic decrease of the Mössbauer line intensities with raising temperatures for freely dispersed iron microscrystals. In contrast to other theories which consider mainly vibration to be responsible we discuss here the decrease in terms of large amplitude diffusive rotational or translational jumps of the particles. Such diffusive jumps lead — in agreement with the observation — to a strong reduction of the Mössbauer-intensity without broadening the line width in a noticeable way. The typical potential well for a diffusing particle in an equilibrium position is derived quantitatively to be 13 meV. We perform three tests on our proposal to implement diffeomorphism invariance in the non-abelian D0-brane DBI action as a base-point independence constraint between matrix Riemann normal coordinate systems. First, we show that T-duality along an isometry correctly interchanges the potential and kinetic terms in the action. Second, we show that the method to impose base-point independence using an auxiliary dN2-dimensional nonlinear sigma model also works for metrics which are curved along the brane, provided a physical gauge choice is made at the end. Third, we show that without alteration this method is applicable to higher order in velocities.
