Level decay and orientational kinetics of the rhodamine B monomer and dimer

The population kinetics and the rotational diffusion of the rhodamine B monomer and dimer were measured by using picosecond pulses from a mode-locked Nd : YAG laser to induce and time resolve the concentration-dependent transient absorption saturation of various aqueous solutions of this organic dye.     

Vibrational frequencies and structural determinations of urazole

The vibrational frequencies and corresponding normal mode assignments of urazole are examined theoretically using the Gaussian98 set of quantum chemistry codes. All normal modes were successfully assigned to one of eight types of motion (N--H stretch, C=O stretch, C--N stretch, N--N stretch, N--H bend, C=O bend, N--C--N bend, ring torsion) utilizing the C2 symmetry of the molecule. The molecular orbitals of urazole are examined. The simultaneous double inversion of the amine groups in urazole is also examined.     

Synthesis and structural characterization of integrally oxidized, metal-free phthalocyanine compounds: [H(2)(pc)][IBr(2)] and [H(2)(pc)](2)[IBr(2)]Br.C(10)H(7)Br

The first integrally oxidized metal-free phthalocyanine compounds have been synthesized by chemical oxidation. Phthalocyanine (H(2)(pc), pc = phthalocyaninato) was oxidized with IBr to afford the compounds [H(2)(pc)][IBr(2)] (1) and [H(2)(pc)](2)[IBr(2)]BrAC(10)H(7)Br (2), whose structures were determined by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods: [H(2)(pc)][IBr(2)], P2(1)/c, a = 8.0272(9) A, b = 21.258(2) A, c = 18.1439(2) A, beta = 113.975(2) degrees, V = 2828.8(5) A(3), T = 153 K, Z = 4; [H(2)(pc)](2)[IBr(2)]Br.C(10)H(7)Br, P, a = 8.4724(6) A, b = 13.5794(10) A, c = 13.8403(10) A, alpha = 90.854(1) degrees, beta = 103.417(1) degrees, gamma = 97.049(1)E degrees, V = 1535.61(19) A(3), T = 153 K, Z = 1. The extended structure of [H(2)(pc)][IBr(2)] comprises slipped columns of pc rings stacked along the a axis in adjacent columns at approximately 70 degrees to one another. IBr(2-) ions occupy the interstitial columns. The extended structure of [H(2)(pc)](2)[IBr(2)]Br.C(10)H(7)Br comprises slant stacks of pc rings along the crystallographic a axis with IBr(2-) ions, Br(-) ions, and disordered 1-bromonaphthalene molecules in the adjacent, parallel columns. The overall reaction for the formation of 1 is 2H(2)(pc) + 4IBr --> 2[H(2)(pc)][IBr(2)] + I(2), and the overall reaction for the formation of 2 (not including solvent) is 2H(2)(pc) + 3IBr --> [H(2)(pc)](2)Br[IBr(2)] + I(2).     

Surface area of papermaking woodpulps used by the British paper industry

The surface area was determined for various papermaking woodpulps: bleached eucalyptus globulus sulphate pulp; bleached eucalyptus grandis sulphate pulp; bleached betula verrucosa sulphate pulp; bleached pine/spruce sulphate pulp; bleached pine/spruce sulphate pulp fines. The method of negative adsorption was used which gives an effective wet surface area. Aldol reactions of a cyclobutanone enolate

Addition of an aldehyde and zinc chloride to a cyclobutanone enolate, prepared by the reaction of an α-chlorocyclobutanone with dimethylcopperlithium, gave an aldol adduct in good yield.     

N‐(4‐Nitrobenzoyl)‐N′‐phenylhydrazine: a three‐dimensional hydrogen‐bonded framework

In the title compound (systematic name: N‐anilino‐4‐nitrobenzamide), C₁₃H₁₁N₃O₃, the molecules are linked into a complex three‐dimensional framework structure by a combination of two‐centre N—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds and a three‐centre N—H...(O,N) hydrogen bond.     

Precise synthesis of poly(macromonomer)s containing sugars by repetitive ring-opening metathesis polymerisation

Various poly(macromonomer)s containing sugars have been prepared by ROMP of norbornene macromonomers substituted with ROMP block copolymers containing acetal-protected sugars as the side chain, which upon removal of the protecting group affords a novel amphiphilic architecture.     

Some non-existence results on divisible difference sets

In this paper, we shall prove several non-existence results for divisible difference sets, using three approaches:

1. character sum arguments similar to the work of Turyn [25] for ordinary difference sets,
2. involution arguments and
3. multipliers in conjunction with results on ordinary difference sets.

Among other results, we show that an abelian affine difference set of odd orders (s not a perfect square) inG can exist only if the Sylow 2-subgroup ofG is cyclic. We also obtain a non-existence result for non-cyclic (n, n, n, 1) relative difference sets of odd ordern.     

The sphaleron at non-zero Weinberg angle

The sphaleron solution is calculated as a perturbation expansion in (g/g), to . For the physical value (g/g)=0.55 the original spherically symmetric sphaleron is a good approximation. However we expect the expansion to break down at (g/g)2 and the true solution to deviate strongly from the original solution above this value.
