Synthesis of the alkaloids julandine and ipalbidine-use of silicon (IV) chloride

Titanium (IV) chloride and silicon (IV) chloride with high oxygen affinity are the best Lewis acid catalysts, of a number tested, for cyclisation of an enamine-ketone (1) leading to the alkaloid, julandine (2); cyclisation of (6) in methanol solution without catalyst yields $\text{O}$-methylipalbidine (7) .     

Heavy metal phosphate nanophases in silica: influence of radiolysis probed via f-electron state properties

We have assessed the feasibility of carrying out time- and wavelength-resolved laser-induced fluorescence measurements of radiation damage in glassy silica. The consequences of alpha decay of Es-253 in LaPO₄ nanophases embedded in silica were probed based on excitation of 5f states of Cm³⁺, Bk³⁺, and Es³⁺ ions. The recorded emission spectra and luminescence decays showed that alpha decay of Es-253 ejected Bk-249 decay daughter ions into the surrounding silica and created radiation damage within the LaPO₄ nanophases. This conclusion is consistent with predictions of an ion transport code commonly used to model ion implantation. Luminescence from the ⁶D_7/2 state of Cm³⁺was used as an internal standard. Ion-ion energy transfer dominated the dynamics of the observed emitting 5f states and strongly influenced the intensity of observed spectra. In appropriate sample materials, laser-induced fluorescence provides a powerful method for fundamental investigation of alpha-induced radiation damage in silica.     

Phosphorescence of thermally oxidised poly(butadiene) and model enones: temperature dependence

The temperature dependence of phosphorescence of model enone compounds in poly (methyl methacrylate) matrix and glassy methylcyclohexane/isopentane solution and of enones formed from thermal oxidation of poly (butadiene) has been studied over the temperature range 77–220°K. The single discontinuity in the plot for the model enone-glassy solvent is due to the freezing of a (solvent perturbed) barrier to rotation in the enone, and an analogous transition is also observed in the model enone poly (methyl methacrylate) samples and in thermally oxidised poly (butadiene). In the polymer matrices, a second transition corresponding to the γ-transition in poly (methyl methacrylate) and the glass transition temperature T_g in poly (butadiene) are also revealed in the Arrhenius plots. The results demonstrate that care must be taken in ascribing such discontinuities solely to polymer properties since intrinsic properties of the luminescence probe itself may exhibit similar features.     

Participation of Bao2* in chemiluminescence from low-pressure Ba(g) + O2 flames

New spectioscopic and vibronic population data support the essential correctness of BaO₂^* as the nascent polyatomic emitter and as the precursor to BaO (A ¹Σ⁺ → X¹Σ⁺) and (A' ¹Π → X¹Σ⁺) visible chemiluminescence from metal-rich Ba(g) + O₂ (+ Ar) diffusion flames at 2–350 mTorr- Absolute visible photon yields are reported over this pressure regime.     

Dissociation constants of the ampholyte glycine in 50 mass % methanol-water from 5 to 55°C,with related thermodynamic quantities

The two thermodynamic dissociation constants of glycine at 11 temperatures from 5 to 55°C in 50 mass % methanol-water mixed solvent have been determined from precise emf measurements with hydrogen-silver bromide electrodes in cells without liquid junction. The first acidic dissociation constant (K ₁)for the process HG⁺H⁺+G^± is expressed as a function ofT(^oK) by the equation pK ₁ = 2043.5/T – 9.6504 + 0.019308T. At 25°C, pK ₁is 2.961 in the mixed solvent, as compared with 2.350 in water, with H°=1497 cal-mole^–1, G°=4038 cal-mole^–1, S°=–8.52 cal-°K^–1-mole^–1, and C _p ^o =–53 cal-°K^–1-mole^–1. The second acidic dissociation constant (K ₂)for the process G^±H⁺+G^– over the temperature range studied is given by the equation pK ₂ = 3627.1/T – 7.2371 + 0.015587T. At 25°C, pK ₂is 9.578 in MeOH–H₂O as compared with 9.780 in water, whereas H° is 10,257 cal-mole^–1, G° is 13,063 cal-mole^–1, S° is –9.41 cal-°K^–1-mole^–1, and C _p ^o is –43 cal-°K^–1-mole^–1. The protonated glycine becomes weaker in 50 mass % methanol-water, whereas the second dissociation process becomes stronger despite the lower dielectric constant of the mixed solvent (=56.3 at 25°C).     

The syntheses of pyridazino[1,2-a] pyridazine derivatives of furan,pyridazine and pyrrole by diels-alder reactions

Diels-Alder adducts were formed in the lead tetraacetate oxidations of substituted cyclic hydrazides of furan, pyridazine and pyrrole dicarboxylic acids in the presence of 1,3-cyclo-hexadiene or 1,3-cyclopentadiene. The products resulting were furo[3,4-g]pyridazino[1,2-a]-pyridazine-6,10-diones, pyridazino[4,5-g]pyridazino[1,2-a]pyridazine-6,11-diones, and pyrrolo-[3,4-g]pyridazino[1,2-a]pyridazine-6,10-diones, respectively. Some hydrogenations and ring opening reactions were studied.     

Rotational and hyperfine parameters of NH2(X2B1) from LMR spectra

Seventeen rotational transitions up to N=7 of the NH₂ radical in its ground vibronic state have been measured by far infrared laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Analysis of the Zeeman patterns and hyperfine structure yields precise rotational, spin-rotational and distortion parameters, and isotropic and anisotropic hyperfine interaction parameters for both ¹⁴N and ¹H nuclei.     

Studies directed toward the total synthesis of discodermolide: asymmetric synthesis of the C1-C14 fragment

[structure: see text] A convergent and stereoselective assembly of the C1-C14 subunit of marine natural product (+)-discodermolide has been completed. The approach employs chiral allylsilane bond construction methodology to establish four of the eight stereogenic centers. Key fragment coupling is achieved via an efficient stereoselective acetate aldol reaction between C1-C6 and C7-C14 subunits.     

Stereochemical assignments of the 7-phenyl-3-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptanes

A method for making stereochemical assignments based on nmr data for the 7-phenyl-3-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]-heptanes is described.
