Ring Opening of Pymisyl‐Protected Aziridines with Organocuprates

The pyrimidine‐2‐sulfonyl (pymisyl) group is introduced as a new protecting group that can be used to activate aziridines towards ring opening. It is readily introduced and removed under mild conditions. Regioselective ring opening of pymisyl‐protected 2‐methyl‐aziridine with organocuprates gives the corresponding sulfonamides in high yields, and the pymisyl group can subsequently be removed upon treatment with a thiolate. The versatility of this new nitrogen protecting group is illustrated with a new synthesis of Selegiline, a monoamine oxidase‐B inhibitor marketed for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.     

Determination of phase transition points of ionic liquids by combination of thermal analysis and conductivity measurements at very low heating and cooling rates

The determination of phase transition points of nine different ionic liquids (ILs) was performed by thermal analysis with simultaneous recording of conductivity. Conductivity of electrolyte solutions and ILs drastically changes during phase transitions and thus is an additional and very sensitive indicator for measuring phase transition points. Evaluation of temperature–time functions and conductivity–time functions with our computer-coupled automated equipment enabled the determination of melting temperatures with high accuracy and reliability. This claim is based on large samples, low temperature change rates and by regularly repeated measurements, i.e. at least seven measurements per IL. The melting temperatures of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonate, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium tris(penta-fluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate, and 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide were, to our knowledge, determined for the first time. The melting temperatures of the other 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium-, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium-, and trimethylsulfonium-based ILs showed either a very good accordance with values published in literature or were distinctly higher.     

Organotin–Oxido Cluster‐Based Multiferrocenyl Complexes Obtained by Hydrolysis of Ferrocenyl‐Functionalized Organotin Chlorides

Three organotin–oxido clusters were formed by hydrolysis of ferrocenyl‐functionalized organotin chloride precursors in the presence of NaEPh (E=S, Se). [R^FcSnCl₃?HCl] ( C ; R^Fc = CMe₂CH₂C(Me)?N?N?C(Me)Fc) and [SnCl₆]^2? formed {(R^FcSnCl₂)₃[Sn(OH)₆]}[SnCl₃] ( 3 a ) and {(R^FcSnCl₂)₃[Sn(OH)₆]}[PhSeO₃] ( 3 b ), bearing an unprecedented [Sn₄O₆] unit, in a one‐pot synthesis or stepwise through [(R^FcSnCl₂)₂Se] ( 1 ) plus [(R^FcSnCl₂)SePh] ( 2 ). A one‐pot reaction starting out from FcSnCl₃ gave [(FcSn)₉(OH)₆O₈Cl₅] ( 4 ), which represents the largest Fc‐decorated Sn/O cluster reported to date.     

Adiabatic triplet state tautomerization of p-hydroxyacetophenone in aqueous solution

The primary photophysical processes of p-hydroxyacetophenone (HA) and the ensuing proton transfer reactions in aqueous solution were investigated by picosecond pump-probe spectroscopy and nanosecond laser flash photolysis. Previous studies have led to mutually inconsistent conclusions. The combined data allow us to rationalize the excited-state proton transfer processes of HA in terms of a comprehensive, well-established reaction scheme. Following fast and quantitative ISC to the triplet state, (3)HA*, adiabatic proton transfer through solvent water simultaneously forms both the anion, (3)A(-)*, and the quinoid triplet enol tautomer, (3)Q*. The latter subsequently equilibrates with its anion (3)A(-)*. Ionization and tautomerization are likely to compete with the desired release reactions of p-hydroxyphenacyl photoremovable protecting groups.     

Diffusion effects on the CPMG relaxation rate in a dipolar field

The diffusion in the magnetic dipolar field around a sphere is considered. The diffusion is restricted to the space between two concentric spheres, where the inner sphere is the source of the magnetic dipolar field. Analytical expressions for the CPMG transverse relaxation rate as well as the free induction decay and the spin echo time evolution are given in the Gaussian approximation. The influence of the inter-echo time is analyzed. The limiting cases of small and large inter-echo times as well as the short and long time behavior are evaluated.     

Finiteness of the number of solutions of Plateau’s problem for polygonal boundary curves II

In this article, the author proves that a simple closed polygon can bound only finitely many immersed minimal surfaces of disc-type if it meets the following two requirements: firstly it has to bound only minimal surfaces without boundary branch points, and secondly its total curvature, i.e. the sum of the exterior angles at its N + 3 vertices, has to be smaller than 6π.
