Highly interconnected ordered mesoporous carbon-carbon nanotube nanocomposites: Pt-free, highly efficient, and durable counter electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells

We report the preparation of highly interconnected ordered mesoporous carbon-carbon nanotube nanocomposites which show Pt-like dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) efficiency and remarkable long-term durability as DSSC counter electrodes.     

Cytotoxic 5‐Hydroxyindole Alkaloids from the Marine Sponge Scalarispongia sp.

Three new 5‐hydroxyindole alkaloids ( 1 , 2 , 3 ) along with seven known analogs ( 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ) were isolated from a Dokdo marine sponge Scalarispongia sp. The elucidation of the structures of the new compounds by spectroscopic analyses indicated that these compounds were an indole glyoxylate ( 1 ), a mono‐indole analog of hyrtinadine A ( 2 ), and a symmetrical bis‐indole with pyridine linker ( 3 ). The comparison of IC₅₀ values for obtained compounds against a human leukemia cell line revealed that the bis‐indole structure is a requirement for cytotoxicity.     

Redetermination of (6R,7S,9S,11S)‐(–)‐sparteinium monoperchlorate

The structure of the title compound, C₁₅H₂₇N₂⁺·ClO₄^?, consists of a monoprotonated sparteinium cation and a perchlorate anion. The two tertiary N atoms of the cation, one perchlorate O atom and a H atom form a bifurcated hydrogen bond, the four hydrogen‐bonding atoms being nearly in the same plane.     

Spectroscopic characterization and preparation of low molecular,water‐soluble chitosan with free‐amine group by novel method

Low molecular, water‐soluble chitosan (LMWSC) with a free amine group was prepared by the novel salts‐removal method described in this study. A weight‐average molecular weight and degree of deacetylation (DDA) of LMWSC were determined by viscometry and Kina titration, resulting in 18,579 Da and 93% DDA, respectively. In the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR spectra the absorption band by the carboxyl group derived from lactic acid and the impurities formed in the enzymatic process disappeared or were significantly lower than that of the control chitosan. Also, from the ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectra the empirical value for the area ratio of the proton and carbon corresponds nearly to its theoretical values. The matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrum identified the difference in the two adjacent peaks as 161. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Kaempferol and kaempferol rhamnosides with depigmenting and anti-inflammatory properties

The objective of this study was to examine the biological activity of kaempferol and its rhamnosides. We isolated kaempferol (1), a-rhamnoisorobin (2), afzelin (3), and kaempferitrin (4) as pure compounds by far-infrared (FIR) irradiation of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) leaves. The depigmenting and anti-inflammatory activity of the compounds was evaluated by analyzing their structure-activity relationships. The order of the inhibitory activity with regard to depigmentation and nitric oxide (NO) production was kaempferol (1) > a-rhamnoisorobin (2) > afzelin (3) > kaempferitrin (4). However, a-rhamnoisorobin (2) was more potent than kaempferol (1) in NF-kB-mediated luciferase assays. From these results, we conclude that the 3-hydroxyl group of kaempferol is an important pharmacophore and that additional rhamnose moieties affect the biological activity negatively.     

Dimesogenic liquid crystal consisting of cholesterol and Schiff base moieties: dependence of LC properties on the spacer length and fluorination of the alkoxy tails

The liquid crystalline properties of two series of non‐symmetric liquid crystal dimers consisting of cholesterol and Schiff base moieties interconnected by ω‐oxyalkanoyl spacers of varying length are compared: one series (SBOC‐ n ) carry the octyloxy tail on the Schiff base mesogen, and the other (SBOF‐ n ) a perfluoroheptylmethyloxy tail. In general, compounds with the fluorinated alkoxy tail exhibited mesophases over a much wider temperature range than those with the alkoxy tail. The latter series favoured the formation of more diverse mesophases than the former. SBOC‐4, ‐5 and ‐7, and SBOF‐4, ‐5 and ‐10 formed the chiral smectic C phase.     

Syntheses of 1beta-methylcarbapenems bearing 5-methyl-4-hydroxypyrrolidinone

A new series of 1beta-methylcarbapenems 1a-d bearing 5-methyl-4-mercaptopyrrolidinone rings has been prepared and evaluated for in vitro antibacterial activity and pharmacokinetic parameters. Most compounds showed excellent antibacterial activity and high stability to dehydropeptidase-1. We have synthesized optically active 5-methyl-4-hydroxypyrrolidinones from enantiomerically pure aziridine esters.
