Photoionization of highly excited atomic sodium involving core-excited resonances

Resonant photoionization in thenl outer-shell of 2p ⁶ nl excited sodium is studied between 32.50 and 33.50 eV. Resonances are of the type 2p ⁶ nl → 2p ⁵ 3snl → 2p ⁶ ελ, i.e. corresponding to the excitation of a 2p core-electron to a 3s orbital. Experimental technique combines laser and synchrotron radiation for exciting sequentially sodium atoms. The main features of the resonances — energies and total oscillator strengths — are measured or estimated. From the results, one concludes that the valence electron is almost decoupled from the core, with respect to the core excitation.     

Studies toward labeling cytisine with [11C]phosgene: rapid synthesis of a delta-lactam involving a new chemoselective lithiation-annulation method

With the aim of the radiolabeling of cytisine, a potent agonist of nicotinic receptors, with [(11)C]phosgene, the rapid synthesis of a lactam model of our target has been studied. The key step of the delta-lactam formation is a new chemoselective lithiation-annulation method, under high dilution, of a suitable piperidinylcarbamoyl chloride. This precursor was obtained from (2-hydroxyethyl)piperidine in a linear synthetic sequence involving a Corey-Fuchs olefination of the corresponding aldehyde, followed by a selective reduction, using a diimide equivalent, of an iodoalkyne into a (Z)-iodopropene piperidine. This alkene served as main precursor to study the cyclization according to several procedures using phosgene as the required carbonylating reagent.     

Synthesis,coordination to Rh(I), and hydroformylation catalysis of new beta-aminophosphines bearing a dangling nitrogen group: an unusual inversion of a Rh-coordinated P center

Variants of the beta-aminophosphine L(1) [Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(Ph)NHPh] containing additional nitrogen donor functions have been prepared. These functions are branched off the C atom adjacent to the P atom, or the P atom itself. Ligand [Ph(2)PCH(o-C(6)H(4)NMe(2))CH(Ph)NHPh] has been obtained as a mixture of two diastereomers L(3A) and L(3B) by lithiation of L(2) [Ph(2)PCH(2)(o-C(6)H(4)NMe(2))] with n-BuLi followed by PhCH=NPh addition and hydrolysis. The diastereomers have been separated by fractional crystallization from ethanol. Ligand Et(2)NCH(2)P(Ph)CH(2)CH(Ph)NHPh has been obtained as a mixture of two diastereomers L(5A) and L(5B)(starting with P-Ph reductive cleavage of L(1) by lithium and subsequent hydrolysis to give PhP(H)CH(2)CH(Ph)NHPh (mixture of two diastereomers L(4A) and L(4B)). The latter reacts with diethylamine and formaldehyde to afford the L(5) diastereomeric mixture. Complexes RhCl(CO)(L) (L = L(3A), 1(A); L(3B), 1(B); L(5A/B), 2(A/B)) were obtained by reaction of [RhCl(CO)(2)](2) and the appropriate ligand or ligand mixture. Complexes 1(A), 1(B), and 2(A) have been isolated in pure form and characterized by classical techniques and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All structures exhibit a bidentate kappa-P,kappa-N(NHPh) mode similar to the complex containing L(1). While complexes 1(A) or 1(B) are stable in CDCl(3) solution, complex 2(A) slowly converts to its diastereomer 2(B). This unexpected epimerization appears to take place by inversion at the Rh-coordinated P center, an apparently unprecedented phenomenon. A mechanism based on a reversible P-C bond oxidative addition is proposed. The influence of the pendant nitrogen function of the diaminophosphines L(3A) and L(5A/B) on the rhodium catalytic activity in styrene hydroformylation has been examined and compared to that of the aminophosphines L(1) or L(2). The observed trends are related to the basicity of the dangling amine function and to its proximity to the metal center.     

Infrared Evidence for Hoffman Reaction During Calcination of Surfactant-Templated Silica Films and Analysis of the Resulting Surface Sites

Fourier Transform Infrared transmission spectroscopy is used to characterize surfactant-templated silica films on glass. The calcination process is followed in situ and evidence for the removal of the surfactant along the Hoffman reaction is given. Once calcined, the surface of the pores of the mesoporous films is proven by deuteration experiment to be hydroxylated. Bands are attributed to isolated and hydrogen-bonded silanols. Silylation reaction with hexamethyldisilazane only occurs with isolated silanol groups.     

Ab initio calculation of the heptamer (NH3)7 as a reasonable starting point for a description of the ammonia crystal

Quasi-Wannier functions for the ammonia crystal have been determined from optimized ab initio calculations of the heptamer (NH₃)₇, thus accounting for all the first neighbor interactions. The calculated geometry and binding energy are in good agreement with their experimental counterparts.

A general study of the chemical behavior of heterocyclic anions, dianions and dianionic reagents under phase transfer catalysis conditions allowed us to synthesize various heterocyclic compounds such as imidazo[2,1-b]thiazole and derivatives; imidazo[2,1-b]thiazine and imidazo[2,1-b]benzothiazepine. Reaction conditions e.g., catalyst, solvent, temperature, etc., are indicated.     

Direct determination of calcium,copper, iron,magnesium, manganese and zinc in amniotic fluid samples using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry

An inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometric method is reported for the determination of calcium, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium and zinc. Samples are introduced directly when a sheath gas device is used. An external calibration procedure is used. The standards are prepared in a matrix composed of 0.5% (w/v) albumin and 0.76% (w/v) sodium chloride. The procedure was evaluated with a standard reference material (NBS SRM 909 Human Serum); all the values obtained are in agreement with the certified values. Results obtained for the determination of zinc, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and manganese in amniotic fluid samples are reported.
